Archmage

This webpage says that to get the archmage class you need a subskill in 3 or more magic schools:

http://mightandmagic.wikia.com/wiki/Archmage_%28H4%29

However it appears incorrect.  In Gathering Storm, Bohb starts out with only primary skills in all 5 magic schools and only one subskill in one school.  So how exactly does one acquire the archmage class?

If you want to be 100% sure we can test it on a custom made map, off the sleeve I would say that when you get the basic skill of the third magic skill nothing is done, but after you get the next magic skill, you become an archmage.

So for example if you have GM Life and Order, you are a monk, when you take basic Nature nothing happens BUT if you take basic Herbalism next OR basic Chaos you will become an archmage.

Thanks.  I tested it and I think one way it happens is this: I started with a Priest with the Life Magic primary skill and one secondary skill in the Life Magic skill set.  Then I used the nwcathena cheat code to add the Death Magic primary skill, the Order Magic primary skill, the Chaos Magic primary skill, and the Nature Magic primary skill, in that order.  As soon as I added the Nature Magic primary skill, the hero becomes an Archmage.  Can someone confirm that this is one way to become an archmage?

Can someone also find out other ways to become an archmage?  There got to be a basic rule of how this works.

I think I figured it out to some extent.  Please confirm if the following theory is true:

1) To become an archmage, a hero needs a total of skill levels distributed in at least 3 magic skill sets. For example, 2 skill levels in the life magic skill set, and 1 skill level in each of the other four magic skill sets, result in an archmage.

2) However, whenever a hero's combination of skills can give rise to either an archmage class and a non-archmage advance class, he'll get the non-archmage class instead.  For example, a hero has 2 skill levels in the life magic skill set and 2 skill levels in the order magic skill set, as well as 1 skill level in the chaos magic skill set and 1 skill level in the nature magic skill set.  This gives rise to both the Monk class and the Archmage class, but the non-archmage advance class (in this case, the Monk class) trumps, so he becomes a Monk instead of an Archmage.

3) Once a hero acquires an advance class, he will need to have even more skill levels in 3 magic skill sets to cause him to change out of his advance class into becoming an archmage.

4) However, if the hero never acquires any advance class prior to become Archmage, then the aforementioned six skill levels distributed in at least 3 magic skill sets will be enough to make him an Archmage.

This explains why Bohb, despite being only basic in every magic skills and basic in one secondary magic skill, is an Archmage.  He doesn't have any skill combinations that would place him in another advance class, and he meets the basic requirement for an Archmage.

Can anybody confirm this?  Please let me know if my explanation of my theory is unclear and I'll try to clarify it.

Edited by Bones_xa at 15:42, 12 Nov 2013.

I've noticed that if my hero has high skills developed in non-magic like combat/tactics/nobility/scouting, and in 1 magic, I could get 2 other advanced magic classes without changing into an Archmage.
For example, it just happened with Mysterio while I was re-playing that campaign. I had established battle mage with GM combat and other high combar skills, along with master order. I also got scouting & pathfinding from the universities. Then I got Advanced death magic, and later advanced life magic, but my class is still a battle mage.

I'm not sure how it works exactly, but I assumed it was something like if your total number of non-magic skills are higher than the other combined magic skills, you stay in that class. But as soon as the total number your two other combined magic skills are greater than the non-magic, you become archmage.
For Bohb's case, he starts with Order, then has basic nature, life, death, chaos, which is Order + 4 magic skills and there are at least 2 different, so he is archmage. And he has 0 non-magic skills so they don't interfere. If I'm correct here, a hero should also become archmage if starts with Order, then gets herbalism and healing, which is 2 + 2 = 4 extra, and with 2 other different magics.

Yeah after re-reading the post above me, its pretty much the same thing as what I said, except in different words.

quick test shows:
basically anyway you combine magic skill, by the 5th level the hero will turn into an archmage. eg. 5 times basic magic skills or basic life, healing, order, enchantment, Chaos and conjuration.
But I guess it confirm what bones_xa wrore = You'll need an additional 4 magic skills (ofcourse depending on any might skills - 4 more magic than you have might skills).
Mengzu I think you got the theory right.. :-)

Archmage is actually the easiest class to get.
