HOMM IV reviews

as GameRankings.com seems to be lagging these days in collecting reviews from game magazines or websites... So manually with help of god.. err.. google.com i found out this review from up few days ago:

http://www.ugo.com/channels/games/features/homm4/default.asp

Presentation: A, The music is top-notch, and the look is not far behind.
Gameplay: A-, It'll be tough to wait for LAN/Internet play, but I can use that time to play the campaigns.
Overall: A+, The game is definitely more than the sum of its parts. Strategy gamers have no excuse not owning this title.

seems only that mapeditor and multiplayer are lacking....

One of the more disappointing aspects of Heroes IV is the map editor. While there are some good points, such as the map and campaign editors being seamlessly merged into one editor, there is a definite backslide from Heroes III's editor. For one, the editor returned to the tedious click-and-drag method of Heroes II, with no brushes for objects like trees and mountains. You can't cut-and-paste, either. Worse, you can no longer right-click objects and artifacts to see what their function is. While there might be a few more options to, for instance, control a neutral town's AI, user friendliness takes a major hit. Hopefully, they'll patch to improve it, especially since there are no random maps anymore - making a map is more arduous than before as it is.

First Impressions at GoneGold
http://www.gonegold.com/
I played the first mission through to learn the game and then played it again once I was used to all the new toys and graphics. This has got to be one of the best games I have ever played, in the 22 plus years of computer gaming.

Veterans of the series most likely already have the game (My EB was sold out within the first three hours of getting the game.) but those who have never played the series because a turn based game never interested them, should run out and pick it up. This is the one that will most likely convert you. If there is a better PC strategy game available, I haven't played it.

there are better games

Heroes 2, Heroes 3, Civilization series, warcraft 2, starcraft...etc.

Heroes 4 blows, it has so many bugs, so many issues, I'm disgusted it was released. Causing complete crashes of my system requiring cold boot are the worst. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I get the feeling it is a lack of them workign with dx8.1. I know I had the same problem in terms of crashing when everquest SoL came out, music hanging and computer locking up. It turned out to be their f'd up coding not utilizing dx8.1 correctly (which is far far different than 8.0).

What bothers me the most is how the user friendliness of Heroes series is now gone. *sigh*

Hmm... the feedback from the buyers of the game is that they are a little unhappy from the differences from the other series. I for one, will be unhappy for the stupid instant retaliation feature... (that really doesn't play well, and no other turn-based game does that.) and no matter what you say, I will probably never get used to it. However, I do feel that right now the negative comments are perhaps because we are so used to Homm3 and 2. So those of you that complained because Heroes 3 was only a better Heroes 2.. here ya go. I say if its not broke, don't fix it.

Conclusion:
There’s a ton or more I could write about, but I simply don’t have the time. And I think the best thing to do would be to run out and buy the game to see for oneself. The game plays, sounds and looks fantastic, and I personally would say it’s the best game I’ve ever played in my 19 year long history with computer games. It will be hard for me to play other strategy games after this. I played Heroes III and all the expansions a lot (also Heroes II), and I will continue playing Heroes IV all the way until Heroes V shows its presence (please start planning it now, and start making it after an expansion for Heroes IV!).

What bugs are you talking about? So far I've only seen a few very minor ones and it has only crashed once on me yet.

this doesnt "rave" like the other reviews - but still a good review ))

review at gamers.com, scored 8 out of 10

Conclusion:
Despite the elimination of many strategic facets from the previous game, many new ones have been added. Needed changes have been made that redefine and change the Heroes gameplay to a degree not seen in the series previously, but other problems linger when you don't luck out on a balanced map. Not perfect, but very fresh, different, and full of new tactics to explore, ultimately HOMM IV is still good fun.

Heroes of M&M 3 moved boundaries that nobody expected to be moved, as most people expected that good-old Heroes could be improved in no other way than to be given a 3D engine.

On the other hand, I have to admit that HMM 3 never managed to keep me glued to the screen as much as HMM 2 due to the fact that I was never much of a fan of megalomaniacal macho trips with angels and devils fighting in the fields, and ridiculously powerful mages and necromancers destroy all of creation with their omnipotent farts.

Well, me old muccas, it's time to celebrate! Time to raise our glasses to Heroes of Might & Magic 4, to the return to the old values, to the living (or at least resurrected) legend! Hang on, we're off… Heroes 4 rule!

4 page review at adrenaline vault, scored 5 out of 5
http://www.avault.com/reviews/review_temp.asp?game=homm4
<snippet>
Gameplay:  The Heroes of Might and Magic series has long been famed for its Civilization-like addictiveness, and Heroes IV is no different. I began late one night, thinking I would simply install it and give it a quick run through before I went to bed. The next time I looked at the clock, it was three in the morning and even then, it took definite willpower to hit the Quit button. Heroes IV grabs you and doesn't let go.

The changes wrought upon the series since the last episode give the title a more definite strategic feel than the "production war" style of gameplay flaunted in previous releases. Furthering the quality of the experience are the exceptionally well-designed and well-balanced maps. Each map has its own distinct layout, theme, quests and locations, and the variety is nearly endless. In all the hours I poured into Heroes IV, I never once got tired of exploring every nook and cranny. Many of the four and six-player levels are truly epic in scale, and require a substantial time commitment to conquer. Some maps even have an underground component. At the end of a hard-fought scenario, seeing the mini-map crammed full of your faction's color is exhilarating.

One great thing about the gameplay is the sheer amount of it. Heroes IV is a mammoth title. Even the first mission of a campaign can take up to eight or more hours to finish. It never gets old, as each scenario brings something new and unique to the table. Even the epic six player maps can easily eat through 15 to 20 hours of time, while feeling as though no time has passed at all. Heroes IV is the new champion of "one more turn" gaming addictiveness.

Pros: Graphics are superb; musical score is Grade A; new focus on the hero works brilliantly; new rule additions make for a better game.

Cons: Combat animations are a letdown; no multiplayer support aside from hot-seat play; crash problems; not enough maps built for three or more players.
