After watching his history documentary, I downloaded Andrew Marr's Darwin's Dangerous Idea. This is a three episode documentary about the social impacts of Darwin's theory of natural selection and survival of the fittest, before and after it is accepted as scientific fact.

The episodes consists of
1- Body and Soul: The battle between religion and science in the 19th century, the church coming to terms with evolution, the philosophical effects on Ethics. 20th century research about evolutionary, genetic foundations of morality and altruism.
2- Born Equal: How the idea of natural selection got exploited by slave traders, German militarism and Nazism, Eugenics. And after WW2, how the wind turned and how evolution was used to establish we are all the same species and have equal rights.
3- Ecology, human impact on evolution and mass extinction. Global warming and what it may bring in the near future.

Marr delivers again with his intelligent, focused writing and presentation with a very balanced touch of humor every once in a while. Anybody interested in history, evolution or sociology alone will definitely enjoy this.

I finished two BBC series, both are dramatizations with actors and both were written and acted well and can be even watched as if fictional history shows.

Heroes and Villains is a six part series that picks critical parts from lives of historical figures such as Napoleon, Attila The Hun, Spartacus, Tokugawa Ieyasu, Cortes.

The episodes on Ieyasu (the Shogun), Napoleon and Cortes are especially interesting. You clearly realize why so many novelists of the 19th century personified strong will with Napoleon and saw him as the symbol of decisive power. The Cortes episode also has more to offer than the typical "greedy conquistadore massacring poor Aztecs" approach. It's way more dimensional.

The second series is Ancient Rome - Rise and Fall of an Empire

This series again picks important cornerstone moments from the history of Rome, starting from pre-Caesar republic days up to Constantine turning Christian and ending pagan Rome, (his carrying the center of power to Istanbul isn't covered, the series focuses on Western Pagan Rome and ends when that phenomenon ends.)

Video Games - The Movie

Well, I guess they didn't want to scare off the decisively ignorant by using the word documentary but "the movie" is exactly that. I can't say I've found it exceptionally impressive, yet, it's the only full-length doc I ever saw about the subject. So, if you are interested in the technological, commercial, cultural and creative history of video games, this is at least a start.

BBC does it again. Hidden Kingdoms. Not just the level of zoomed detail but the way they edit them so cinematographically is beyond belief in this 3 part series:

Jerry, you really need a hobby or something.  Get some exercise, ride a bike, I don't know.

Now to watch this to see what you've gotten your knickers in a twist about this time.

Honestly, its like having homework.

Just finished watching the documentary.  It was really good, kept my interest all the way through.  But what on earth is the issue Jerry??

The problem is he thinks the doc proves HIS opinion. Yet, the truth is, it only suggests that biological factors shouldn't be completely omitted while researching why man and woman choose different jobs statistically. Of course, this has nothing to do with not having the same options and opportunities. Mind you, it's Norway, again a very  advanced Nordic country on gender discrimination. Still, the doc also shows, even there, some social norms from the past are not completely gone.

You're right though, it's a good documentary, not the kind of propaganda crap you'd expect from Jemo.

If you like archeology + history, <imo> this is one of the better docs. It's a bit dated but Wood covers all the bases, so it's not all about digging pits. i.e. The story-tellers/lore-masters are truly amazing.

Michael Wood's In search of the Trojan war. {6 parts}
Part 1

Added this Doc on the founder of Modern Turkey. I knew of him from WW1 battles but didn't know his story.

So exactly a century later, this project will cover the war simultaneously. If I know myself, I wont be able to follow this on a weekly basis like the way it is intended but the idea is very interesting and it seems like a huge project.

The Secret Life of Chaos
This was just amazing to watch, Alan Turing's studies on morphogenesis, Mandelbrot's fractals, Lorenz and the butterfly effect, all of these in relation to how life evolved. I wish it had many episodes instead of just one hour, the material is certainly most interesting.

I've heard awful things about this from a friend of mine who was a physics major. Turns out it was full of disinformation and reduction fallacy.

Well, after some googling, "not for hardcore scientists" seems to be an understatement:

The film has been criticized for both misrepresenting science and containing pseudoscience and has been described as a case of quantum mysticism.

Which is basically "feel the force, Luke" kind of stuff. I prefer my Star Wars with Darth Vader in it.

Not really, dude. It's not even consiedered a documentary but rather an "independent film" and The plot follows the story of a photographer as she encounters emotional and existential obstacles in her life and begins to consider the idea that individual and group consciousness can influence the material world. Her experiences are offered by the filmmakers to illustrate the movie's thesis about quantum physics and consciousness.. I read many articles about what quantum mysticism is, I already know this kind of stufff is fake. It would be okay to make a sci-fi movie like this but presenting it like a documentary (I am talking about the producers btw, not you) is simply fraud and intellectual dishonesty, imo. I hate it when people do that.
