Hearthstone

As several of you undoubtably know, Blizzard has had a card game in Beta for some time now. Hearthstone, Heroes of Warcraft.

Recently(yesterday) I have been admitted to the Beta.
So is there anyone around here who's invited as well? Or intends to play it in the future.

On the serious note, I got beta access a month ago, but I haven't been playing the game too much, mostly because I'm not fond of trading card games. But, I do login from time to time.

Anyway, the strangest mechanic in the game for me was te fact that you cannot defend with your creatures. Of course if you have creatures with taunt, you can compensate. I guess they wanted to speed up the gameplay.

Barely playing any other cardgames, I'm not realy missing the fact that you cannot defend with the cards. As you say, Taunt cards compensate for that somewhat. And with that said, hiding behind a wall of creatures is still more or less possible.

I opted in a while ago but still haven't gotten a key, watched a lot of it on YouTube though and definitely plan on getting it when it comes out. I really like the mechanics and UI in this game, the mana crystals and taunt and how the stats are portrayed make so much sense to me. The only thing that worries me is how grindy it is, has it taken a lot of time to get good decks?

Kinda depends on how much money you're willing to spend on it.
But on the other hand, the cards you get by default are pretty decent.
And if you watched it on youtube you'll now that many things depend more on how you play then on how good/rare your cards are.

I am in a beta for a week now. Battle Tag Rmz#1309, from Europe. It is ok I guess, I am playing Duel of Champions for almost a year, and Hearthstone looks really simple in comparison to it. I also dislike that there are so many random effects, but hey it is fun, and there are things that are better than in DoC.

Still, it looks like that game will have bright future, because it is Blizzard we are talking about, I'm pretty sure that they will do something about the game and all the imbalanced stuff, and I'm looking forward to the expansion.

I am not playing it currently, but will probably in a couple of days, I enter there from time to time.

I opted in about a month or so ago and received a beta key just 4 days ago on Monday.  Started playing it the next day.

Anyway some background info on me.  I mostly play TBS games (Do NOT really enjoy RTS at all as I find it just a clickfest to often) like Heroes 2-4, Master of Orion 2, Etherlords 1 and Master of Magic.  I have played real life Magic The Gathering and YuGiOh (though this was like 10 years ago).  I have also played Duel of Champions online though have not played it since about September.

I have been enjoying HearthStone quite a bit although ofc it does have some issues.  Although it says we are in a Beta I do not find much a beta in any sense.  To me Betas should only last like 3 months unless there is something wrong.  To me Beta players are just getting a head start unless they reset it on official release.

Some basic points for ppl thinking about playing.

Monster stats are listed as Atk/HP with the casting cost in top left corner as a # inside a blue gem.

Heroes start at 30hp at the start of duels.

Monsters, when attacking with a monster you can target one of your opponent directly or one of his "Minions".  Exception to this is if he has a Minion with the "Taunt" ability which forces guys to deal with him before then can attack anyone else.  If they have 2 guys with taunt then you can choose either but both have to be dealt with before you can attack anything else. Spells & Abilities however can still target whoever you want.

You do NOT get to choose your starting Hero, it is randomly chosen for you but you can unlock the other Heroes by defeating them in the "Practice Mode" along with earning exp and basic cards to help better a custom made deck.

There are 9 Playable Heroes (so far lol) and each has a special activated ability that costs 2 mana and can only be activated ounce a turn.

Warrior - Armor UP!, gives your Hero +2 Armor that the enemy has to get through to get to your HP.

Priest - Heal Self or Ally upto 2 HP (cannot go higher than chars max hp)

Paladin - Reinforcements - Get a 1/1 guy with no abilities

Hunter - Steadyshot - deals 2 damage to the enemy Hero

Mage - Fire Bolt deals 1 damage to target of your choice, even your own guys if you want *Hint Hint*

Rogue - Equips your Hero with a 1 Atk / 2 Durability (Durability = number of uses) that lets him attack ounce a turn like a Creature, but remember that if he attacks a creature he will take damage from it = to it's atk.

Shaman - Summons 1 of 4 mionions but you can only have one of each.  They are as follows (Note that their are other creatures with the name totem that are NOT summoned by this ability)

 - Healing Totem - 0/2 - Heals Friendly minions for 1 at end of your turn.
 - Wrath of Air Totem - 0/2 - Spell Damage +1 (spells that deal damage deal 1 more as long as he's in play)
 - StoneClaw Totem - 0/2 Taunt
 - Searing Totem - 1/1 no abilities

Druid - Shapeshift Gives your Hero +1 Atk for the turn and +1 Armor.

WarLock - Take 2 damage and draws a card along with spending the 2 mana ofc.

I have found Priests, Paladin, Shaman and Druid the most useful so far. Warrior, Mage, Rogue and Hunter not far behind.  Least useful imo is def WarLocks.

Hope this helps some of you out.

Warlock is definitely not the least useful, or we wouldn't have so many aggro Warlock decks on high level. In this game, where card advantage matters a lot, having special that gets you the card even for 2 life and 2 mana is pretty damn good, especially if you play aggro(massing a lot of cheap level monsters fast), you will empty your hand quickly. Since you are playing that kind of aggro/rush, you don't care as much about your HP, and that is why Warlocks usually sacrifice their HP for card/board advantage.

Yes I see this more and more now but remember I did say that I have only been playing 4 days so far.  Maybe 10 hours total.

Also many of those Aggro/rush cards you can only get from the packs so you need to save up gold to buy them all.

So perhaps we can both agree that WL isn't the best EARLY/STARTING character but can rock LATE game?

Ran into a WL with the Murloch rush insanity vs my Mage.  Managed to win though I was down to 5hp for 3 turns at the end.  FlameStrike FTW

Yeah, sorry, didn't see the part about playing so little.

Murlocks are great with Warlock, since they are cheap and buff each other to enormous proportions. Indeed, Warlock is not good starting hero, but if you manage to get some important cards that are also relatively easy to craft, you can do wonders.

I also started 2 weeks ago, and didn't play much, but I have tendency to start searching for high level players and their play style when I start playing the new game.
At first, I had a hard time, but then I managed to craft 2 Blood Imps, 2 Flame Imps and 2 Demon Fires, all these are a must have cards. From that point, it started to work out quite well. Then I disenchanted Snake Trap and something else and manage to craft Doom Guard and Knife Juggler and I was winning most of my games quite convincingly last time I've played.

Also, Don't buy Packs, it is far better to play Arena for 150 gold where in the end you will get Pack anyway, and you will manage to get more gold and crafting dust from Arena. Arena finishes when you lose 3 games, or when you win 12. It is like a draft mode in MTG, and the more you win, the more gold and dust you will get. In my opinion Arena is like the best thing about Hearthstone, something a game like Duel of Champions really lack.

I must agree, I love Arena, it's so great.  First time I saw it I thought "Oh Booster Drafting cool".  It has been one of my favorite parts of the game.

Sadly my biggest win record there so far is 4.  Have been to the arena 5 times with 1x4 wins, 2x3 wins,1x2wins, 1x1win.

So what do you get if u manage 12?!  I really can't wait to see that.

One downside to the game is lack of chatting during the match.

Yes, Arena is great. My win record is also 4, I don't care much about it, I just like the part when I am creating deck in Arena and get some legendary cards etc. You need to think a bit.

It was 9 wins, now it is 12 after the latest patch that was updated few days ago. I've been reading some posts on the forums and the more wins you get, the more gold you get, but 8 wins gives you more gold than 9 wins, because with 9 wins you get 1 additional card, or at least it was like that.

http://oi40.tinypic.com/kdtssx.jpg

I guess that with 12 wins you can win even third and forth card, maybe a bonus pack.

About the Chat, I don't really mind, I like it more this way. If I want to chat with friend, I can do that anyway, but enemies that aren't in your friend list will more often than not just flame you to death.

I tend to find emotes to be functional enough for communication during games.

As for arenas, I like them, but I'm not that good at them.
I've done 2 so far. With 3 win Hunter deck and an all lose Warrior deck.

Thanks for the pic that that looks really good.

Sadly I just had my first NO WIN Arena fight.  I got 1 Expert Pack like normal and ~45 dust for crafting cards.  I think I actually preffered the dust as it helped me make my main deck better.

I have all but 3 heroes level 10+ with my mage at lvl ~25.

If anyone wants to add me as friend in HearthStone my name there is "EvilLoynis#1724" without the quotes ofc.  Really not sure why we need the stupid numbers though, I thought at first it might be kind of a spam filter but since you have to accept before they can chat you that seems unlikely.
