Are myths truly just ledgends?

Hmmm, some of the things we hear about daily that for years have just been called myths just might be the opposite.  Whenever any one of you have played Heroes or any of the other Might and Magic series, have you ever stopped and wondered weather or not those creatures could have existed?  Not only are things considered myths just found in stories but even in todays dictionary.  For instance:
trog·lo·dyte (tr¼g“l…-dºt”) n. 1.a. A member of a fabulous or prehistoric race of people that lived in caves, dens, or holes.

That's not all either.  What about sightings of strange things like ghosts, U.F.O.'s, or even Big Foot.  It kinda brings to mind that maybe things like unicorns and etc. could have existed but maybe just died out or stay well hidden.

Another one is Angel sightings.  Are they real or just peoples imagination.  Sicence does speak of Animals undergoing changes in order to survive and the Bible even speaks of unworldly creatures.
I guess what I'm getting at is, Are we really Alone?
I'd like to hear what you guys think so post what you know.

If you include religion in myths, I believe some myths aren't just legends, as I am a Christian. Thus, I believe in angel sightings. I believe there are angels everywhere. However, we can very rarely see them, but I feel God tells me that they are there. If we consider creatures from Heroes, I also believe in demons and the Devil.

About the troglodyte, my Norwegian-English dictionary translates "troglodyte" to "huleboer", which means "cave-dweller". So the troglodyte from the dictionary you mention might be another one than the troglodyte from Heroes.

This subject is pretty funny, in a sad kind of way. As humans, we tend to hold the things we believe in pretty close to our hearts. When one of our beliefs is proved to be in error, we tend to ignore the facts and continue to hold onto our beliefs.
For example, I have a co-worker who has some pretty strong religious beliefs. Her religion takes a very literal stand where the bible is concerned, which as you can guess would require one to discount some of the more elementary scientific discoveries. For instance, she does not believe that man evolved, but instead that God actually created a man, and then a woman from a part of that man. Nor does she believe that dinosaurs existed. I point this out not to discount her beliefs nor to poke fun, but to illustrate that no matter what evidence there seems to be to the contrary, in the end our beliefs usually win out over any evidence to the contrary.
The end result, IMHO, would be that many humans would refuse to accept that there are aliens, or ghosts, etc., even if they happened to encounter one face to face. The human brain would figure out some way to discount any such encounter. At heart most humans want to believe that God (or whatever higher power they believe in) created the ENTIRE UNIVERSE just for us. The existance of other life forms would fly in the face of our centrist point of view, and we can't have that, now can we?

Well yea, there`s alot of myths in the world.
Like did the Babylon had hanging gardens or not.
Is there any life in the rest of universe - well it`s not a real myth but one thing aren`t myth - did Jesus Christ live - He did - but did He rise three days after His death?

I myself am a Christian as well so I believe that angels are everywhere and to call this thread or even beliefs in general sad then I must ask you, without beliefs, what would we as humans have to live for?

Rainbow, life before I hadn`t faced with Jesus - that was such a snowty life. But now, Jesus everything to me. I have all, totally all.

Angels are everywhere? Well I haven`t thought much about angels. The Bible doesn`t speak much of them.
Could you imagine that some "Cristians" do worship the angels.

"All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not."

Wow, this is starting to turn out larger then I expected.  I thought 2-3 posts at the most was all I'd get.  Anyway, what I really wanted to say was has anyone ever just sat down and read a ledgend.  I know one that can be found in many cultures.  The story of the flood.  Most know the story with Noah and his arc but it seems this tale is told by not just the jewish and christian but by egyptions, greeks, romans, and many others.  Each are so similar that you'd think these people must have all sat down at one table and wrote together but that is not the case.  The tales were each writtian around the same time but the greek version was writtian probably the earlist.  All contained a man and his family instructed by a God to build an arc and board on it two of every animal because that God was going to send a flood to wipe out humanity.  It's kinda cool when you think about it.  And maybe that's the reason why we don't have unicorns or other mythical creatures anymore.  Maybe Noah forgot a few.  He was pretty old you know.  If I remember correctly their was even a song that sang about that.

the reason for the story of the flood is that there has actually been one once, they believe that the earth has changed poles. (They find stoned woods in the ice caps) meaning that the poles once lied sommewhere else, and so the oceans have taken a new position (the flood?).

Personnaly I don't believe in religion.
Yes, there may have lived a Jesus once, but he must have been a lil' loney. And probably some bandits took away his corps out of his grave. You got to be honest, how can one believe in such nonsense as the christian belief? The pope is pretty senile, women are terribly discriminated and how many billions does the pope have? (share with your 'brothers' and 'sisters'... the pope keeps everything himself)

YOu asked for it.

I can't remember much of it... but it was on basic school.. Everyyear we got the same story over and over again..
one of those was about noah(0r another famous bible guY) that traveled trough the desert for 40 days/weeks/months/years can't remember, but they all survived without food(MANY PEOPLE) and then after that 40(whatever days/years) they came in a land with purple strawberries and giants..after that I can't remember it. But I thought the giant part was a little bit unbelievable, And I was 5 years back then! I was a smart kid!

yes but

Have you ever thought that the bible was just exagerating everything?
I'm christian and personnally I don't believe that God created Adam and Eve, I don't believe in Noah's Arc.
I'm even not sure that Jesus resurected. I heard many times about a story, that Juda used some medicinal flours sothat Jesus don't die, and then he didn't. I don't tell the story well, I don't know if it's true, but even if it's true, I believe it's a sign, because Jesus knew it would happen like that.
To change the topic, when I discovered fantazy, I wanted to believe that elves and orcs had existed, but I don't think anymore.
I can't imagine the earth with many races dominating it. All this races would have spent all their time to hate eachother. Humans have enough problemes to support themselves.
Or maybe we could believe that men definitively killed the other races, but I think we would remember it, more than we do.
And for Samcho71, (hmm, not sure it's exactly that), do you know the game hunter?
From the White wolf RPGs?
There are humans and many kinds of monsters, like vampires, Werewolves... and humans don't know that these races do exist, because when they see something unnatural, their brain tries to forget it as soon as possible.
(just said it because you talked about beliefs which always win and don't change even with evidences.)

A good arguement to bear in mind is

the creationists Vs the Darwinists

Modern creationists argue that many of the old testament stories should be seen as metaphores and not the literal truth, which allows for criticism such as the evolution theory.
