But if I rate "King's Dream" above "Metataxer" because I'm more found of non-directive maps, what am I doing wrong?
After some attempts to draw one I'm pretty sure I can never make an open map as hard as one with fixed paths and stand still heroes, yet I still prefer to fight a moveable AI.

You are doing a subjective analysis, like not allowing a student pass university exam because you would prefer him/her blonde of with a mini skirt instead of jeans. What is important in a rating is the objective part, are there failed designs which prohibit moving between zones, are there unwinnable battles unless you wait 18 months doing nothing, etc.
The fact that we enjoy or not a particular design could be expressed through a comment (which the mapmaker will certainly appreciate too), instead of sending a map to oblivions just because your daily mood. The ratings should reflect the functionality.

I guess it depends on ones taste.
I agree with Bloodsucker, I don't like those directive maps, where there is only one specific way to go or thing to do, you can call it lack of skill or patience or whatever, but if I get stuck like that, I will probably get tired of the map very quickly.
Maybe I won't give it a low rating, but instead won't vote at all and post a comment instead about how the map was'nt my cup of tea.
I prefer big, open maps, with almost endless possibilities and where there is a fair chance to win, for all factions.

I have a major in Sociology so I'm more familiar with this situation but I think is a closer analogy: it's like I have a bright student that presents a well documented case study but interprets the data in a different way then I would, driving from it completly different conclusions and another presents an also well documented study but all his data analysis is conform to my believes. I will tend to give the last an easy pass where I will pay very close attention to every argument of the thesis I don't agree with or I'm new to, so I will notice all his flaws and put a lot of objections, something that may end up making it look a worst case to my eyes.
There is in fact a lack of objectivity here but my preferences are not completly arbitrary like in your example, they are founded in my own experience and informed believes.

If you still believe this stupid AI has a fair chance to win given even chances, I have but one word for you...

Well, to close the case concerning my stance on, people making maps are giving from their free time with no other reward than a possible "thanks".

Some maps are indeed not properly tested so, depending of the nature of the bug, you may consider giving a low rating when you really wasted a lot of time then something stops you from completing it, or go for the constructive way: report the error to the mapmaker so he can fix it for other people.

Then you can go the selfish way, ignore the time the mapmaker spent on, ignore his wish to share with others, claim that his map doesn't deserve to be played by dropping a low rate then vanish. This will probably have two consequences:  a) the mapmaker will feel discouraged and will unlikely start another one, b) people visiting the site will ignore anything with a lower rate than 10, as the post above suggested.

While you agreed yourself that the low rating, in your case, reflects ONLY your taste, not that map is functional or well designed. So in the end, we visit a maps hosting site, where you have a bunch of poor maps rated 10 by author and which nobody plays -therefore no ratings, then some really interesting and challenging maps which everyone tried to play, but send into void by poor rating reflecting only individual tastes.

My two cents on the sociological approach.

Well it's kinda weird that the map maker can vote on their own maps, that feels dishonest to me.
But of course if only one vote is placed, the map can't be played by many, opposed to a map with 100 votes, mostly good and a few bad.
I guess I would prefer the one with the most votes, even though it might have a lower rating...

The maps with a 10.00 are worth a shot

Not true, there is always a low soul to pollute a good map with low rating, as it happened to Nautilus and its Metataxer, Kingslayer's maps - or Wayfarer which is a gem. Then you have maps without any comment but a rate of 10 from author.

Rather than ratings, is often the comments which show a map quality. Also is easy to see if a map is good from looking at the minimap.

You're righ, forgive me I wasn't clear. I meant the maps in the HOTA section on maps4heroes with a 10.00 were worth a shot, i played them and they all had their charms for me. True, these are no gems like rise of the emperor and whatsorver that got downvoted by a person but let's talk about that saddening fact in another thread and stick to HOTA content here

Well they teased a new level 3 neutral, Leprachaun some pages back, but other than that it will probably be bugfixes for the most.

But, my map is "only" XL. Can I somehow convert it to a huge map, or at least one size bigger without loosing any terrain, and placements? It would take 3 months to recreate it otherwise.

You can use GrayFace map editor patch option of copying map parts.

You need to download Gray Face map editor patch adapted to HotA editor: https://yadi.sk/d/JbbyEUFLdv4hq
Put it in HotA folder and run h3hota_maped.exe with command line key "/p:gf_me_patch.dll". Some of functionality of Gray Face patch will be available (including copying parts of map).
To copy map part enter Obstacle Brush section, click "copy" icon in the top-right corner (near Mini-map) and select what map area to copy.
Then start creating new map, click "paste" icon in the top-right corner and select place to paste copied part of map.

Btw to everyone, this works 100%. I just managed to copy a SoD 144x144 to a giant map, ALL terrain, all objects, and I even could fit in the middle of it all (or where else I would have liked to do it) + that it also allows to take ALL underground.

This works like MAGIC!!!

A > register on heroesworld.ru (use Google translate)
B > install ICQ chat program
C > update your heroesworld.ru profile with your icq number
D > create a message in the 'arranging games' thread by stating that your looking for an opponent for HotA
E > send icq messages to other players that has previously been looking to play HotA. Go back in the thread until you spot someone.
F > have patience finding other players until you can build up a list of friends

Also, install 'HW rulez' as you will probably need it.

An alternative to heroesworld.ru for finding other players, though which is not used a lot as of yet, I think, is heroes3.tv.

Where to find proper maps for match?

Hi.

My crew mate and I are back in HOMM3 after few (or several) years because of HotA. In these days we really enjoy playing campaigns, but when we complete this, we will play 1-on-1 MATCH for a full dinner with pancakes.

As we did for many years, we will play match with following rules:
- Number of games in the match is equal to the number of cities (9 earlier, 10 now).
- Players change their order alternately (like white and black in chess match).
- In all 10 games, each player choose own city but in whole match he must use each of 10 cities exactly once.
- Heroes will be chosen randomly (with specific exceptions and restricts).
- Preferred size and number-of-players of maps are M and 2/2, but others are also acceptable if they are reasonably playable for competitive 1-on-1 games ("tournamentable" maps).

Therefore, our question is:
Where to find proper HotA maps for our match?

Thank you all.
Greetings from Belgrade.

Yeah I gonna check some maps and building my own... but still a G map with low amount of water takes quite a while...
