When you implement a limit - which is the way a game should behave, it should work as a limit, not act chaotically, as stacks beyond 4000 provoking crashes, leveling after 74 going crazy until 6000+, moving stacks >32000 makes them vanish, resources and primary skills overflow screwing the game and so, on. It looks they simply didn't have the time. You don't even have to wait Wog, the first bugged maps were designed in 2001 (tew) for SoD only, and we saw the overflow freezing the game. So it took one skilled mapmaker to show the flaws, as soon as the game was released.

My idea on this is that they didn't think H3 would get the notoriety it got, that H4 will be a successful upgrade, so why bother with polishing H3 as it will be soon replaced by better. Well we got stuck for 20 years with H3 so naturally we had to expand it, that's a long time to play only a vanilla version.

Hello,

I want to install Heroes III complete (purchased from GoG), then HD mod (purchased from Steam) and on top of that, Hota.

Will it work? Is it possible to combine GoG/Steam ?

So far I played only Heroes III complete + Hota, but that HD mod seems to have lot of nice features, like unit transfer, artifact transfer and so on.

The customize-as-you-please is what (ironically) somewhat turns me off regarding WoG. It's hard to play multiplayer because your friends may have an entirely different view on which options should be on and which should be left off. Things get simplier vs. AI, but if you wish to compare strategies with a friend, you may find it hard to do because your rules are so different.

Keep in mind there are TWO "HD" thingies going about:

- One is a mod that enhances the game with extra interface options and other resolutions beside the original ones available ingame. This mod is freeware and download links can be found here on these forums;

- The other one is basically a re-release of the vanilla Heroes 3 game, released by UbiSoft with updated and enhanced graphics. That one is for sale on Steam and hence, not freeware;

By what you're writing, you are interested in the first one, not the latter one .

Yeah, basically I would go like this: Wog for singleplayer, Hota for multi.

As Maurice said, don't get confused with two separate things both having "HD" in their names. Just download Hota + HD mod, they are meant to be played together and are 100% compatible. You can download HD mod from here.

HD Edition by Ubisoft sold on Steam is NOT compatible with Hota and IIRC, not with any other mods either.

Great, thank you for clarification.

So is there any neccessery order to install it?

I have now Heroes III complete + Hota.

Should I install Hota new version (1.5.xxx) and after that the HD mod? Or viceversa?
Or it doesnt really matter?

Do you guys prefer HotA, or WoG personally? I know Sal is more of a WoG guy, and that's all I know lol

Tbh I never really enjoyed Wog, whatever it was for singleplayer or multi. Played few with my brother and sister back in the day when Hota was only being teased and whatever it was campaign or singleplayer or multiplayer, there always was that feeling of "It's not really Heroes, it feels too fanmade and flashgame-like."

I might try doing mapmaking for Wog someday, but I'm just so used to using Hota objects as well as it's just easier to spread, advertise and share Hota maps on web nowadays compared to Wog maps. I also imagine you need to be pretty decent in programming/scripting to even make a solid Wog map so again, no for me.

I've been thinking about either going back to Wog for some streaming once I'll get too tired of current Hota update/once I finish all other maps on impossible.

I will give it that it does offer a lot of customization for experimentation and I like exactly that, but it's all really messed up quality wise. I'd rather have few good options instead of everything on plate, while the most of tasty thing is the plate itself. Does that make sense? I hope it does.

Other than that I'm thinking about giving VCMI a try once Oasis is released.

Sure it does make sense. Without a set of rules, universally accepted (or simply enforced), one can't say what the heck is he exactly playing. His very own vision of Homm3 with berserker flies in? Some of the options are pretty grotesque and ultimately just screw over your gaming experience.

However, what does bother me in Homm3 is the certain clunkiness and randomness of early phase. The game is something else entirely if an important map object is guarded by grand elves, and something else when it's guarded by stone golems. The impact of the 1st week is huge and usually can decide the game right there. That's why I like commanders so much, since they do act as an earlygame equalizer a lot.

Finally, I love Loynis, but he starts with learning

(btw, I'm not a big fan of "impossible" difficulty. In my eyes it screws up some towns too much, especially dungeon with pillar of eyes requiring 1 resource each and being prerequisite for other dwellings in the town )

This doesn't really matter since you can turn them off.
You can turn everything off, play with safeSoD and only profit from fast stacks split/heroes meeting screen, graphical-only mods etc, or just make it all like SoD but change the skills you want, like the ones you've been ranting about last couple of pages for example.

The new HD mod update and the Hota update crash.

The Hota artifacts don't have correct sprites in HD mod and that leads to a crash, the game quits.
Didn't have that problem with the previous HD and Hota update.

For eg: You defeat a hero with Hota's artifact in his inventory. You get the artifact after winning, but the game instatly crashes then.

Tbh the fact that Loynis is a Cleric instead of a Knight and has Learning are like the only two cons of his. Especially in Hota where having water magic is much better than it was in SoD/Most WoG scenarios.

Agreed on the impossible difficulty though. Mind you, I'm not playing it on every single map - I'm nowhere near that good and in a lot of new Hota maps difficulties based on resources don't matter, only the way that AI works. Dead Man's Tales and Talent Shortage are good examples.

It's also why I haven't played as many factions as I've used to, on one hand having a new faction would be amazing, but at the same time, I can barely handle like 4 of them.

Summarizing your comments so far, you're actually the perfect example why Hota and Wog were and are two different projects. One offers a great deal of experimentation, changes the game into different genres and allows so many rules that you can get lost in, but it's harder to get into nowadays. Another is more like what you would expect from the official expansion, it mostly adds new quality content and expands instead of outright changing the gameplay and removing anything. Heck, this is why I usually enjoy H4 more, than H5 and H3, despite playing the latter much more often. Y'know what they're saying, different strokes for different folks. But I think there's already a mod that has both Wog and Hota content in as far as I'm aware so why not both?

Much better? I couldn't think of any direct/indirect buffs for Water magic in Hota. Have I missed/forgot something?

There is? Or do you rather mean Cove being (partly) playable in another mod?

Thanks for this great expansion and not being abandoned even today.

I have a question about modding of HotA/base game.
How can I merge CRTRAITS.txt or other txt files after extracting and modifying into h3bitmap.lod again? Or simply putting modified files into Data folder work?

Indirect mostly. Mind you I'm talking about single player, not multi. A lot of maps outside of multi are water focused so spells like summon ship or water walk are much more useful than they were before  in a lot of large ocean like maps with too much distance in between islands. Cure/Dispel are useful tools when fighting against stack(s) of Sea Witches and Eovacius' Clone speciality makes him the best Cove Magic Hero and being able to clone stuff like Sea Witches is pretty good deal. It's not just playing as Cove, but also when countering Cove especially Forgetfulness on Expert is pretty useful or at least it was before 1.5.

Problems Multiplayer mode - save / load HotA 1.5.1

I can no longer load my maps (xl-size) in multiplayer mode under HotA 1.5.1, although I saved them. They are always visible in single player mode only. The maps were created in the editor of SoD. Under HotA 1.4 we played the cards very often, saved and reloaded. I have uninstalled everything from HOMM III (HOMM III, WoG, Era, HotA ...) and now only HOMM III complete and HotA 1.5.1 installed. Same mistake as described. If I want to save a map under the same memory name, it is said that the "name already exists - should be overwritten?" although the space is empty ... ???? ???? if I say "yes", it is saved but at the next loading ... nothing is available and I "should start a new game to be able to create a memory".
I use Win 10 pro, the game is not installed on "C".
By the way ... now I can open the maps created under SoD only in the HotA Editor.
Oh yes - I only play in hot seat mode with my wife.

Save game issues

First off, Hota is amazing and I love it.
Only really had small issues until now.

I was playing The map "devil in the details" and have been playing for like 2 weeks (its a gigantic map) and my friend was loading autosave because he had left a town empty for the computer, but when he tried to load the file all saves related to the game (except one from very near the beginning) had disappeared. I closed and opened ect. but they were gone. I checked the save folder and they are there. I found them in game and for some reason they changed from multiplayer to single player. Does anyone know a way to change it back/ stop it from happening again?
