Just download the unmanaged version and then watch the video below. At least that should be a good start, problems might arise with firewalls blocking or whatever.

The most common way is generating a VPN connection with your opponent (usually with Hamachi, but you can also use TeamViewer, Tunngle, or any other VPN client). After that you behave like you are in one local network with your opponent. Choose TCP/IP connection in multiplayer menu, then host a game or join a hosted game (either it will appear in the list of connections or you will have to enter the IP of your opponent manually)

Okay, so I kinda feel that the HotA cursor is a bit too flat looking without a more pronounced shadow for the normal chains of the link expect for the cross which marks the destination and so shouldn't float. I quickly got used to the new fonts after they were updated the last time to look more like the SoD counterparts, however, I cannot quite get used to the new cursor, although I'm not losing sleep over it, of course. Don't get me wrong, it's a fine cursor, but it does look way a little flat for my taste. I like the destination cross to be at the ground as if to say 'this is the destination', but all of the HotA cursor links looks to be near the ground. The green SoD destination cross is even highlighted for the same purpose.

Anyhow, I've made some illustrations for easy comparison of some alternative versions, but I'm not saying to replace the current one with these. It's just for comparison. What do you guys think? Is the current HotA cursor perfect for you or no - or maybe you don't care much?

**

Note: Only for the purpose of illustrating, just quick and dirty editing. It doesn't look very good.

So, I personally find it kinda hard to believe that pirates would ever paint such big Jolly Rogers on their main sails. It just looks a little odd to me in that way. Plain black sails with smaller flags - or something like that - might be an alternative for a more believable looking pirate ship. The ship's sails/body doesn't move in the wind, I also noticed.

Don't get (too) mad at me, it's just some old feedback that I have now tried to illustrate, and it's highly option based, obviously.

Edit1:

I revised the whole post for better readability and understanding

Edit2

So after thinking more about the ship and playing around, I did realise something important. There's not very many pixels to make something with because the ship is further back in the town screen, and so I'm stating to realize why the crew made the Jolly Rogers so large. It's hard to make something at a smaller size and then have it also be good looking and showing details. Like, it's impossible to add a good looking Jolly Rogers flag to the main mast above the main sails. I'm such a genius, I know.

How about giving spellscrolls a different frame/color/alpha etc. if the carrying hero has the spell already in his spellbook?
So its easy to see wich spellscrolls the hero should equip.

@hcl

If you install HD mod then you can see what kind of spell scrolls they are just by looking at it.

obviously you didnt get my point or didnt read my post.

the point is not to see what spells the scrolls are - but if the hero hast them already as spell in his spellbook or not.
thats quite some difference

Well, I'm sorry if I misread your post on accident. It happens

Personally, I never felt having to take a look at your spell book to see if your hero had already learnt a spell to be an issue. You think this is too cumbersome? I guess you could have something like a transparent check mark written over a scroll if needed for convenience.

Edit:

Just for fun >

Example of transparent indicators (imgur.com)

They Don't look very good, though. Like, they don't seem to blend into the surrounding at all.

its just a Quality of life (QoL) category if any. I just came up with this wish when exchanging tons of spellscrolls between my heroes and i found it annoying to check them vs their spellbooks if they are of value for a specific hero or not. Since i fail to memorize what hero has what spell already learned or not. Soemthing like a transparent checkmark would b quite cool mho!

The first one is ok,not yet ideal though.
The second makes it too much look like a multiple-choice test.

i rather thought about giving the whole scroll-image some transparency if its alrdy in book.
or maybe alter the left and right "paper"-border of the scrolls - e.g some glow or transparency?

im a napcake concerning photoshopskills, so i cant provide an image of my imagination how it could look. Just words .)

Guys, Heroes 3 does not handle transparency. If you want to apply a transparency effect on a frame, you will need to build a second def. One for each spell.

Good to know, ok 1 option less. On the other hand, transparency is just 1 of many possibilities i guess.

Why go complicate when all you have is add to text string on right-click, like in wog.

But this is more a HD mod option, game play tweaks.

If you have a dozen or more scrolls, you probably won't be wanting to click each one to find out if you have it.

I quite like what Sal has shown, actually. It might not be as convenient, I suppose, but it might still be more convenient for some people? And at least adding some simple text doesn't change the look of the game negatively in any way, and you cannot be confused as you might be by a visual effect.

@ hippox, I love those pirate flags

I have another suggestion. Currently you can see what the words mean as numbers (so few is 1-4, several is 5-9 etc) which is very nice.

I showed the game to a friend to me today and he liked it (he never played a HoMM game before but liked the style).

His problem: he never knew if he could handle a creature or not because he did not knew it's strength (Centaurs look tough for example, but are kinda week).

Maybe possible to add 'level 1', 'level2' creature to the monsters when rightclicking for info? I know HoMM mostly is a hardcore community that knows the ways, but still....

@ markmasters

I certainly cannot blame you for it, and after I have thought more about it and such, I can understand the artistically design better now than I did before. I'd normally prefer a more believable pirate ship (an opinion), sure, but I also get that the town screen is also about giving you a distinct Cove impression and which having detailed (thus the size) Jolly Rogers on the canvasses helps achieving this.

Anyhow, yes, there's a lot of information to be remembered without alt-tabbing out of the game, but it might be hard to have all the relevant information convenient available in-game. Like, why stop with only showing the level? Because you need to know all of the relevant statistic about a creature and its upgraded form to make a good decision, right? You basically would need to see the creature statistic box instead of the current adventure map window. Further, you also cannot see what upgrading a creature does before actually buying the upgraded dwelling. You cannot know what an artefact does before fighting to acquire it. And so on. I'm not saying that they couldn't make more information available in-game in a relevant way (they have already done so before), but I don't think you can put it all inside the actual game, unless they made an in-game encyclopaedia.

I would recommend helping your friend finding a good collection of useful links which he can easily open to acquire any information that he might need. If you guys are playing with a very fast timer then I can see how you'd lack the time to go outside the game to look up information, but that's part of the trade off.

I know that VCMI have implemented a feature showing you the threat of an engagement which might be helpful to beginners, though, in my opinion, this only takes away a lot of the fun with such hand holding, and it should never be available in a proper multiplayer game. I also don't like the creature queue for the same reason. It's just crutches which removes certain fun elements like actually having to remember and keep track of the queue yourself. How boring it would be if you or your enemy was not able to make any mistakes. I hope the crew never implements it.
