What's the equivalent of trolling in real life?

So, trolling as in deliberate, annoying, pointless behavior is quite a new term, I don't even think it was used this way before the internet. I would have remembered it. People never define what trolling is but they accuse each other of it quite a lot. Which of the manners or actions do you consider trolling in real life? How do you respond to trolling in real life, how do you treat the person? Do you think a thing such as real life trolling exists or do you think a troll needs to be faceless and voiceless to be able to do some real trolling.

Real life trolling example. There's a word for it, but I can't remember it right now. Anyway I was 9 and our class had just learned to read books, one student had fallen behind, and he had to read something on a poster in front of both parents and students, I don't remember why, but I think it had something to do with a play.

Anyway, since he'd trouble reading I thought it'd be hilarious to add my own text where he'd read out loud something along the lines "I'm an idiot", well I thought it was funny then at least. Though I didn't go through with it, back then I wondered: "What am I doing to him, I wouldn't want anyone to do that to me, how can I do something like this", now I also consider that I could probably have gotten in trouble for it.

Other acts of trolling I remember was when I played Heroes of might and magic 2 with a friend of mine. Again we were rather young, around 10 or 11, and he'd shared the code for black dragons with me, and some time later I found the code for winning a map. Anyway, in stead of just giving him the code, I made up a large part of it, so the code was 3 numbers, and I told him it was X numbers followed by the 3 correct numbers, whereby it obviously still worked. He then spend a lot of time to remember the whole sequence of numbers despite only the last 3 of them being important.

Funny enough, it hit me back, because I too had to learn the whole sequence eventually not to give away I'd been pulling him one, yet I never found a good time to reveal it.

The last one I can remember was when a classmate of mine, who was tired of school and wanted to go home, asked me how much time was left of the lecture, seeing I was the only one with a clock, and we sat close by. I saw there was like 40 minutes (out of 45) left, but I told him 10 minutes, then I slowly approached less and less, and first when there was 5 minutes left of the lecture did he catch on to it. Though that wasn't an attempt at trolling, but more because I thought it'd make him happier to think the lecture was almost up. I probably was wrong on that one though.

well, trolling, for one, is never "pointless". trolling always has a goal, and that goal is to get a response from people, to get people arguing, even if the subject brought up in the trolling argument is complete bunk. actually, specifically if the subject brought up is complete bunk, especially for the troller. sure, there are trolls who specifically address subjects they actually WANT to talk about, in which they actually have emotional stake in, but more often than not, it is just to get people arguing. there are forums on the internet pretty much dedicated to it. 4chan comes to mind.

as for trolling in real life, i do that with my family. i'll say something sexist in front of the female members, just to get them started on me. funny thing is, i always tell them what i am doing afterward(after the responses), and how much i get a kick out of it, and they STILL respond as if i'm actually a chauvinist pig. they never learn, and it cracks me up every time. i do the same thing with my sister and her husband, talking about bad parenting around them, and about how parents are the bane of the future of society, because they are all so BAD at it, and these kids who weren't raised correctly become ****heads later in life. although, they don't respond. doesn't stop me from trying, though. trolling is much more fun in real life. it's pretty pointless on the internet, and it just leads to subjects being brought down to stupid levels, and making everyone look dumb.

it's (somewhat)easy to spot a troll if you know the psychology of trolling. i see plenty of trolling in the hc. some other people in this forum tend to think i'm trolling them on here, when nothing could be further from the truth. the actual times i was trolling(very, very seldom, and about nothing at all in particular), no one ever called me on it. i was called one every single time i WASN'T. which leads me to believe that some of the people on here understand me in absolute reverse. which really befuddles me.

their behavior in response to mine, understanding me in absolute reverse, this is what makes me think they are actually trolling me.

the way i look at it, everyone is paranoid about trolling, at least on the internet. people are quick to call someone a troll, even when the "troller" is actually just stating his case.

it is because of a lack of the ability to see the other person's point of view, that they are mistakenly called a "troll". this is why great trolls are so effective at what they do. they hide behind this sociological knowledge, it is indeed their very playground. this is why it is harder for people to distinguish between an actual troll, and someone who is being honest. they mix truth with their lies. they are effective liars.

plus the fact that, no one wants to be made a fool of in front of a world of anonymous strangers(apparently), so they are quick to call someone a troll, merely as a defense to something they don't understand. the whole "troll" psychology on the internet is kinda interesting, when you consider what kind of thinking goes into it, and what comes out of it. it's a lot like the psychology of a sociopath, but on a lesser level.

lol, now people are going to think i am a real troll. and if i try to deny it, they'll think i'm lying. this post just screwed me in hc. nobody in hc will ever take me seriously now(if they every really did). that's what i get for being honest, i guess. people think i'm lying.

fred, people like you are the reason why I get so much snow. Due to trolling too many people have become unable of humour. It's sad.

Everytime people didn't appreciate the kind of humor or reaction you were going for, you'd end up getting called a troll.

while most trolling is harmless and just for the lulz, some people take it out of hand so in real life , that could evolve into a form of bullying.
