minimum requirements are a joke...

I have a Pentium II 400 MHZ CPU, 288Mb RAM, 32Mb Graphics Card, and a 24X CD-ROM drive, and the game runs painfully slow. I had to quit after about 20 minutes, because I was getting frustrated with the speed.

And?  How does that make the system reqs a joke?

System requirements means 'can you run the game', not 'can you run the game well'.

It would be a joke if you did meet the requirements and the game wouldn't run, or crashed on you, or whatever.

I have almost the same specs though, and it runs decently enough on 800x600 and full screen.  Not great, the overworld is a little choppy at times, but definitely playable.

Look, I work in a video game store, and I have the opportunity to play many new games each week, and lots of the new ones out have similar minimum requirements. The only difference, is that they actually are playable on my system. Inside towns my computer is at about 8-10 fps, and in combat it gets down to about 2 fps. That is not playable.

It is getting slower and slower after playing the same game for 8 hours. The virtual pages keep swapping between my 128M RAM and 40G IBM 7200 HD, I guess! I need to restart my PC to resolve this problem tempory, but after another few hours ...

Well first of all there is no P4 with only 800 mhz...
32MB on a graphic card is not new anymore,
128 MB will be standard in a very short time..
and...your system is guite old...

Well I guess Homm IV will run very smoothly on Ti500...
as a matter of fact I am sure you wont have any problems with Homm IV at all, at least not because of YOUR system...
but I guess you already know that...

A word of advice: If you plan on buying a p4, get Northwood, they are the best ones at the moment (older models are crap), or just get Athlon.

RAM: DDR for Athlon, RD for P4 (DDR for p4 is not too hot since it doesn't have bandwidth that p4 needs) So get that rambus motherboard and RD RAM its worth it...

For Graphics card don't get MX series whatever you do! They are the worst pile of crap ever! Plus one of the new Geforce 4's is nothing but a souped up Geforce2 so don't be confused... I heavily suggest Geforce 3 ti500 64 mg or if money's not a factor, get a geforce 4 128 mg

Im running p4 1.4ghz, 512rd, 64geforce2

The longer Homm4 runs the slower it gets.  Im not a programming wiz so im not even going to pretend i know the solution.  However this definitely needs to get patched asap.  After a few hours its painfully slow.....yet i keep playing because I am a hardcore Heroes junkie....Anyways, overall i love the game.  The 5 tier skills with pre-req's make for interesting choices for any army type.  Anyways, corssing my fingers for a patch asap!

That's odd, I played all night on an AMD 400MHz machine and never had any slowdown.  It's a little slow in general - I have to run it at 1024x768 with no animations and no music to get the same speed heroes 3 has, but the slowness never seemed any worse over time.  Maybe it's just the XP/Win2k issue?

The gradual slowdown overtime is a rusult of a bad gamecode, which needs to be optimized. Total Annihilation kingdoms had exactly the same slowdown problems even on top PCs. When the patch came out, it optimized the code which made the game faster.

As far as I am concerned they released a beta version, I will not play it until the patch.
