Well, we know that the issue is most likely on your own end as the map editor seems to be working fine for most others. It's possible that your install of the game is corrupted. Try to disable whatever anti-virus protection you have on your PC and then install the standalone version again. It's also possible that your Windows install in missing an important resource that the map editor needs. I don't know what it could be, tho. Else, try to run it on another PC, if possible, for testing purposes.

bug report

I'm just done playing a TCP/IP game versus a friend on 1.3.3 (with the hotfix), and I noticed that when another human player is attacked by the AI then the box that would normally say 'remote player is under attack...' doesn't display itself any more. The timer in the left corner also disappears. The game doesn't stop or anything like that, tho.

I'm confused as to if this could be a new feature by HD mod, however, it doesn't make sense not to be informed about the event, altogether.

Relevant info: HD mod version 3.716, HD+

This issue is probably HD related, but I'm not sure yet (I'll probably test it out)

**

Another bug that's extremely irritating is when the System sometimes doesn't play the countdown alarm sound when the timer is about to run out. This bug has been in the game forever, it seems. Can it be fixed? That would be very nice, if so.

Newest HotA with the last HD+ mod to work with XP.

Okay the first of these listed below are old bugs I think may have been from SoD or before but they still come up now in HotA so:

1) Heroes getting stuck in a loop - Usually we all see this happen occasionally when a hero for the AI gets 'stuck' in an 'enter town/exit town' loop. He takes one step out of his town and then takes his next 'step' re-entering town, over and over until his movement runs out.

However I have just seen a particularly nasty version of this which causes games to be un-finishable. The hero ends up on or starts out on a teleporter portal and gets stuck in a loop of 'porting between the two locations of the portal he is on. Since this seems to require no movement the loop goes on infinitely until you ctrl+alt+delete to shut the game down. Apparently reloading the autosave and doing different things with your heroes does nothing to alter this.

2) Not only does animation become laggy and choppy, but the turns of the AI side hit with this bug take up to 10 minutes to complete because the game almost freezes with the hourglass-cursor frozen for several minutes, followed by a brief bit of choppy movement-animation, then a few more minutes of nothing, etc. etc. until his turn is finally complete.

At least one of the AI opponents almost always gets 'stuck' with this every game I play.

The first bug is strange: I've been playing some games on the latest version (with HD) and I remember the appearing of that box... Hm, maybe some specific circumstances could help.

As for the second bug I could not recreate it as well. Was it with or without HD, chess timer, "background sounds" option, in-game sounds?

I'll try to see if I can recreate the event tomorrow. I'll report back then. I do have the saves from that particular match when it happened, still.

You really haven't experience this happening? That's really strange, because I've experience it quite a few times, and not just me, but also a friend of mine. In fact, it probably always happens a couple of times during a 5-7 hours season. I have no idea of the specific circumstances leading to the bug, though. I'm 95% sure that it happens with both the chess clock on or off. Although, I mostly only play with it on, so I can only say that it happens with it on for certain. I know that the music doesn't stop when the alarm is not beeping. I'm not sure about other the sound effects, tho. I'll try to notice that the next when it happens.

-background sounds 'on' (always)
-in-game sounds/music 'on' (always on when taking the turn)
-HD (HD+) 'on' (always)
-Bug happens on different hardware PCs (only W7 64-bit tested)
-Bug happens in both SoD and HotA (HD, HD+ on) Without HD on is not tested.

**update** (this might be confusing, I'm sorry)

I've been unable to verify the bug concerning the missing message notification, however, that's not the end of it. So, the last time when I played, and I reported this issue, I'd had a lot of issues starting a working game between my two locally connected PCs. PC-1 was running W8, PC-2 was running W7. I was getting this error message on my W8 machine when trying to start a network game:

'Error opening file .\DATA\RMT?Q SC.BIN!'

followed by >

'Could not save game as ''RMT?Q SC.BIN'

The game would then crash out on the W8-PC that was hosting the game. If the W7-PC was hosting then the W8-PC would still crash out with the same error. I have some samples logs of the same event:

crash samples (HD, HotA).7z

I tried everything I know about network troubleshooting, i.e., completely disabling the firewall modules (after checking the logs for anything being actively blocked), disconnecting the network router from the network, clean HMM3 installations, and so on; basically nothing worked. I then tried to just restart my W8-PC at one time, and then suddenly it was working without any hiccups. I thought it was strange, but we just started playing.

So, the point of this story is that now I'm having the same issue again, but this time nothing works to fix it (not even pure luck), and so I cannot confirm the 'missing message bug' again until I somehow solve this other hosting issue. But it got me thinking that maybe there truly is some strange issues between connecting HMM3 between W7 and W8. Of course the issues could also be purely on my end, too. Anyhow, another point is that even though we managed playing a game between these two PCs, maybe some other compatibility issues still caused the message to not appear. Well, at least it didn't on the W8-PC (which I was sitting at). I actually don't know if the other PC had the same issue, but I doubt my friend remembers something like this, unfortunately. I didn't think to ask him at that time.

Lastly, I have dual-boots (W7+W8) on all of my PCs, and I have more than the two of them counting laptops, so I'll just have to do some more testing, I suppose. Of course if you cannot replicate a bug it might as well have been a product of my imagination or some other weird misunderstanding of perception. My report is rather pointless at this point, I admit, and I should not have reported is so quickly without more initial testing. I'll do that next time then.

I'll update this post again if I make some process into the case.

I exctracted standard H3 campaigns (RoE, AB and SoD) and I encountered a small bug while playing one of them. I was playing final scenario of Foolhardy Waywardness, the one where you need to survive for 5 months. I did, and game didn't end. It seems that HotA interpreted objective as defeat all enemies. This is minor bug, but I thought I should write it down.

Well, obviously that's not a bug. We did not guarantee that any extracted campaigns will work. They are not present in the game. No maps of previous Heroes versions work on HotA, the fact that you were even able to launch some old campaigns on latest HotA is rather strange, but not more than that.

You can move the files to \Maps and play the classic campaign via the custom compaigns menu.

Of course you can. As well as you can install HotA over WoG or change, say, the third byte in Heroes3.exe to FF. It is just that we can not guarantee anything to work after that.

Yes, you're right about the cause of the crash. I've been able to confirm that it's indeed some kind of folder/file security issue. It's actually a bit complicated, but as that particular crash was on my end, I wont talk more about it in this thread.

Anyhow, about the missing message; I've been able to reproduce it, but I doubt very much that it's a bug, although, I do find it a bit strange. If red (human) player is attacked by an AI then blue will see the 'A computer player has attacked a remote player...' message on his screen. However, if blue (human) player is attacked by an AI then no message will appear on red's screen. Also, red's screen wont be locked by this message which means he can still navigate the adventure map. It's just how it works, it seems, for some reason.

Screen perspective of red player when blue is under attack by an AI

Screen perspective of blue player when red is under attack by an AI

About the missing clock, which I mentioned, so during an AI's turn the clock will disappear, of course. Don't quite know what I was thinking there, but whatever.

Edit:

I understand it's probably just because Red is the host/first player in the turn, and that it's just how it works, as said. Also, if the AI is taking more then a few moments to complete its turn then it's safe to assume that it's attacking another human player, of course. The System could in theory inform Red that Blue was under attack by a simple system message, I suppose, but I guess it wouldn't matter much. So much talk for nothing, hehe.

I just noticed that haspids and sea serpents dont have an idle/breathing animation. If skeletons have [and they dont usually breathe], shouldnt haspids have this animation too?

also i have a suggestion about skyship VS cover of darkness. IF [notice the caps] you get the grail [a very hard-to-get building] you get to explore the entire map, but only once. After that, if a necropolis builds a cover of darkness [which costs only 1000g], the location gets covered and the skyship becomes almost useless. So, logically, skyship should have priority over cover of darkness or at least reveal the entire map daily/weekly/with a custom button when you click on the structure.

So i downloaded the SOD/COMPLETE download, tossed it in my heroes 3 complete map (which works without problems). If i tried to do it somewhere else the games says 'missing files so game might not work', so im sure the needed files are there. I press the HOTA launcher. then a small HOTA launcher screen pops up. I press run game and then i get:

CRITICAL ERROR, CRASH DATA IS REGENERATING

Without any success (no info from crash report).....Any idea why this happens?

*the full version does work, but i wanted to make it HD + SOD (conflux) in addition 2)*

I don't understand that part.
Try the following :
1. Do a fresh new CLEAN install of H3 Complete/SoD.
2. Install HotA.
3. Install HD mod.
4. Open HD manager, create HD.exe
5. Launch the game.

Thanks for your fast response.

I did everything except re-installing HoMM3 complete (couldnt find my cd so quickly)

So far I can let HOTA work (with all SOD maps as well) so thats nice

But when I make an HD shortcut for it, it now only loads the HoMM 3 complete as HD, not the content for HOTA for some reason.

Do you think reinstalling the complete game might effect this? in that case i'll have to start the grand search for the CD

That's odd, are you sure you created the HD according to correct hota.exe ?
Maybe you installed the HD mod wrong, try uninstall and reinstall it. Make sure you create the HD to the correct path, it should be named h3hotaHD.exe
If it still doesn't work, the grand search is worth a shot, or gog.com The message about missing files might get corrected by clean install.

It seemed the final step had a problem with administrator legislation which is fixed now

Thank you for your help before, reinstalling one of those things seemed to be the key!

I'm now gonna enjoy the game....thanks again

BUG: When you learn a spell in shrine (at least for level 1), no image is shown in the right panel. Only text.

And it seems not to happen every time. (Maybe only for spells that you do not already have in your book?)

Edit: Or maybe it happens only for heroes without a spell book?
