on

it is clear to me that there are people in HC who do not understand the difference between constructive criticism, and plain rudeness.

saying things like, "this idea/work/mod sucks, is lame, is stupid, etc" or "this idea/work/mod doesn't belong in heroes" is rude.

saying things like "i don't like this idea, and here's why" or "i don't think this idea/work/mod blends well with the current graphics or storyline that heroes uses, and here's why" are both examples of constructive criticism and opinions, that do not make fun of, or detract from someone's idea/work/mod.

i, and others, think the rude comments are highly unwelcome in the modding community. everyone should get a chance to see their personal vision realized, without anyone ridiculing it or them.

there are far too many unfinished mods/work/ideas out there, to be overly negative towards someone who is actually coming up with stuff.

i think the mods/site admin should add an addendum in the CoC, specifically stating the differences between rudeness and positive criticism(as well as enforcing it), so that more people will feel welcome to express themselves here without fear of ridicule.

Suppose someone suggested adding teletubbies to HotA. Would it be rude to tell them that their idea doesn't belong in HoMM?

no. i wouldn't use it if i didn't want it. there is no point in telling them it doesn't belong, and it's rude. besides, one day, the person who ridiculed it might feel like playing it. you never know.

personally, i'd like to see everyone that has an idea bring their idea to fruition. i'm sure i'm not the only one, either.

the people who want to create should feel like they can belong here, and not be ridiculed for any ideas or work they might want to embark on.

Wait, what?

Fred, you are being paranoid. I just put the context so when mods take a look at your post, understand from where it comes from. Just that. I don't understand why you jump onto me with a knife to stab me, lol.

Relax, man!

lol, sorry. i thought you were trying to point out my mistake, and use it as a reason to throw dirt on what i'm trying to do now. my bad man, i still have a little leftover hostility, and am trying to make it work for the better.

again, i apologize.

As a general guideline, if you have an issue that pertains to a particular thread in a particular forum, please post your issue in that forum's feedback thread or HCM a mod for that forum directly.

@ cor: it's not a particular thread. it just happened recently in the thread linked here by sg. it's the kind of thing that has happened time and again in the WoG subforum, that i know of. i thought here would be the best place to address this, as it involves the CoC. is there another place i should address any suggestions to the CoC?

to clarify, the reason why i'm formalizing what would otherwise be known as common knowledge, is because it doesn't seem to be common knowledge, at least, not in the WoG subforum.

@ bak: LOL. never even occurred to me. and it absolutely should have.

To put it bluntly, the moderators aren't here to provide anyone with a prescription for how to behave like civilized people. The Code of Conduct is a guide that should be followed, but if you're asking me for some kind of document that spells out how you need to follow the Code of Conduct in every hypothetical situation, it's not going to happen. Anyone reasonably intelligent should be able to figure out what it means to insult (or not insult) someone. It's inevitable that users will toe the line or blatantly step over it, though. The moderators are here to punish people who do the latter, and make judgment calls when there is a claim that someone has done the former.

The Bleeding-Heart Boyscout is Back

I'm sympathetic to Fred's point of view.  I haven't been active on this site for quite a while and I have virtually zero interest in modding activities, but past experience has shown that what he says is true.  Indeed, at HC (and pretty much everywhere else on the Web), certain folks resort to varying degrees of attacks or insults in lieu of constructive criticism.  Whether it's symptomatic of the relative anonymity of online communication allowing for uninhibited expression, I cannot say.  Nevertheless, I spent years on this site trying to (peacefully) encourage more constructive responses instead of discordant ones.  It was, and perhaps still is, a somewhat naive and idealistic view for an online community, but I've always thought it was a worthwhile cause.

I agree with Corribus that the current system (if utilized correctly by concerned petitioners) should suffice for resolving these conflicts.  I've been gone for a long time, so I'll just have to trust that the moderators have been doing their part.  That said, however, I would certainly hope that people will resort to constructive criticism whenever it's called for.  Insults never help the situation, even when used only in jest.  This abrasive type of communication might be humorous on television or in Internet memes, but I consider HC an offshoot of real life, where feelings get hurt.  Even if someone's ideas are flawed or completely irrelevant, there are peaceable ways to communicate that sentiment.  Plain negativity will only exacerbate the situation for everyone involved.  You would think most people would know this already, but alas, this is the Internet.

Just my two cents; let's all support one another and enjoy life.

Since my question was unanswered and Corribus said he will silence everyone for offtopic, I thought I should ask again here, because it's still bothering me.

I said:
Excuse me for continuing the "how to treat modders" topic, but does it mean that we shouldn't tell other people that some ideas in our opinion just don't fit HoMM3 universe? No one actually used words like "It sucks" etc., so honestly I have no idea what "constructive and polite criticism" is in that case. Does it mean we can't say we don't like some ideas and we just have to either praise them or leave?
