Totally new to HoMM. Why do you LOVE Heroes of Might and Magic 3? My reasons inside..

Heroes of Might and Magic series has been love at first sight for me, the video gaming discovery of my life. A game that makes me feel fulfilled, and also helps me to know where I belong. To make a long story short, I discovered this game recently, and purchased the entire series at GoG.com. I was totally AWESTRUCK. Love at first sight -lived that in real life too- does exists in videogames after all.

I also purchased the King's Bounty games, the new ones -King's Bounty: The Legend, and King's Bounty: Crossroads, amazing games from equally awesome Russian developers. I also bought them at GoG.

But I want to talk about Heroes of Might and Magic, what makes this franchise so special, unique and above everything else, and Heroes of Might and Magic 3 in particular.

I mentioned this to a friend, to explain the perfection of this game.

Well,...these are the reasons why I LOVE and adore Heroes of Might and Magic - especially Heroes of Might and Magic 3, which I'm playing and now I can't stop....

Heroes of Might and Magic is for me the game that I had always wanted to play and did not know it existed. It's like playing Chess.

So smart, so strategic.

I feel I have been in the shadows, under the cover of darkness because I hadn't knew this game before. Everything clicked and changed when I managed to know this franchise. There is no gloom, no shadows or darkness anymore. My vision is covered with a special pigment that allows me to better see through the gloom and shadows.

Personally I love Heroes of Might and Magic in that you see that there is a game which actually rewards strategy.

For example, I also have Age of Empires 2 HD on Steam. And I love it, I have always been into it, and a huge fan of the series, but it is now when I see it is a very limited game (although still very fun to play, that is).

The opening in Age of Empires, how you start the game, to achieve interesting results, is the same for everyone. And also since it is strategy in real time it doesn't matter at all how good a strategist you are. Everything is based on your speed with the mouse and the administration of resources.

In Heroes of Might and Magic however, a good player stands out not by being super quick with his or her mouse or for launching an attack faster than anyone else...

He/she stands out and differentiates himself/herself by using the appropriate strategy, knowing what to do with their troops, the positioning of their units and how to place them in a certain way. Real strategy!!

And then there is this thing in Heroes of Might and Magic 3. Witches - and other new units, Druids, castles and towns, and the marshes, home to the witches - that seem to me incredible characters. In real life women are witches, in a good way - strange, disturbing and wonderful.

I am in the first map of the campaign of Heroes of Might and Magic 3 and this fascinating game is going to steal many hours of my life.

To add to that, in Heroes of Might and Magic you can save the game at any time, or you can stop for a minute and return at another time, stretch your arms meanwhile, relax your legs, talk to someone on the phone or any other typical task in your daily life and returning to play again without feeling that you have to be SO focused and concentrated when you come back and you don't need to oblige your brain to be at the max in order to play, everything happens naturally. It's simply like that.

If you add to this that all of it is combined in an uniquely manner; the mythology, the creatures... They are not simply orcs and elves but there are hundreds of monsters of classical Norse mythology, or from fairy tales. We also have more standard characters taken from the middle ages, which are more realistic and typical, However, many other creatures are perturbing and unsettling, and marvellous in their own way.

This game has so many wonderful aspects. Great, beautiful stuff. I shall never ask for anything more in a videogame.

It's a pleasure to know there is still new people discovering and enjoying my favorite game.
I also bought King's Bounty recently, but the only game I ever found whose playability rivalizes with Heroes 3 is Etherlords. It's game I definetivly recommend.

What keept my interest in Heroes 3 over more then 10 years is his extreme complexity and the way Wog/Era allows to change his behaviour, forcing you to create new strategies depending on the options given for each map.
And also the amazing quantity of great maps users have made over the years, like The Dragon Slauther, Stargate Atlantis, 300 Spartans, To Kill or Power and The Lord of War.
It's something you miss in other games.

Many thanks for the suggestion. Reading you, I feel compelled to buy Etherlords, the game is on GoG already. Well, this is the thing... Should I buy the original Ethelords or Etherlords 2? Maybe both?

Besides that, I will look into those maps you mention. But I don't know where to start to be honest. So much for my noobishness in this wonderful series.

Still, I have the Heroes 3 HD utility and installed HoTA too, although I am still playing the Erathia's campaign.

Cheers.

If you have to choose buy Etherlords I. The second is very good too, but I think it will be very difficult to start with no experience of the game.
But I bought a pack with both versions and an another game as bonus for something like 10 bucks, some weeks ago. They didn't arried yet. I still didn't had legal copies of any of those games.

There are two sites where I use to find maps: Maps4heroes and Celestial Heavens (www.celestialheavens.com)
Maps4heroes has feedback on the maps and walkthroughs.

Some of the maps I mention are very hard and some (like 300) full of enigmatic quests.

You will probably prefer to play something more down to earth in the first times. If not, there are also the WoG campaigns...

I decided to purchase both Etherlords games at a discount, since I love everything Heroes or everything truly related to it. I will begin with the first game then, whenever I play it.

It might get some time though, 'cos Heroes of Might and Magic is so varied and addictive that I don't see myself leaving the game ever.

Ajother thing I also love about Heroes of Might and Magic is that it's not just about good and bad. My heroe is allegedly a celestial creature now and 172 Wights wanted to join my cause. That was awesome, so cool.

The only problem with this game, is that you fall for it so much that tiem flies. That's what worries me. You think you had plenty of time, but hell,do the minutes fly!

I wouldn't personally restrict myself by playing just a Heroes title, I will eventually play them all, but Heroes of Might and Magic 3 is like the game I was always hoping for and I see myself playing it for a long time.

The thing is... You begin to play Heroes, and you tell yourself.. "One more turn". "Let me check that hero there". "Are you powerful?". And when you realise the weekend's night has turned into day.

Like the saying goes... Early to bed early to rise, makes you healthy, wealthy and wise.

I would change it to "I play Heroes of Might and Magic 3, therefore I am".

p.s. macro1 and DoubleDeck, thanks for the replies guy, I entirely agree with you, in fact I proved that point in my initial post. Cheers.

Forgot to mention that I downloaded the Dragon Slaughter map you told me about. I don't know how to use it yet. I also found two of the other maps you listed in your post, but they were EXE files and decided not to install them for now.

I am not in a hurry to play them to be honest, especially now that I know they are meant for expert players.

Other than that I immensely enjoyed the Celestial Heavens websie, and I am glad to know that some of the people who created the game are still around after reading an interview there celebrating the 15th anniversary of this wonderful, wonderful, wonderful game.

The maps... are an entirely different story though. I feel very much I am in the newbie stage and I don't want to bite off more than I can chew.

To give you an idea I just finished the very first map of the "Long Live the Queen" campaign, and I missed one of those trees that give you experience, because I thought it was part of the scenery.

Additionally, I learnt that the stables can actually upgrade your cavaliers to champions, from a guy on Youtube. I also learnt that Cavaliers/Champions do more damage the further you move in the hexes, because of the Joust Bonus.

So with them it is better to actually use the directional icon to place them where you want them to land the hit.

In addition, I didn't know til today that you can recruit units in the Citadel. It might seem stupid but I was clicking on every single building to create units, when you don't actually need that.

"Cheers" is a kind of jovial and informal greeting, which implicitely also includes a 'thank you' for some information or service provided. People also use it when they're toasting a drink with eachother, hence it's used in a bar relatively often.

GoG is my favourite gaming portal ever on PC. I prefer physical copies of games but GoG is digital done right.

The games are TRULY yours forever, they don't require a connection to play, no DRM whatsoever, and once you download your games you can move them or copy them to a pendrive, a disc, an external HD, etc.

It is like having the original disc with their original installation files. (unlike Steam and others where they they install the game for you and you are no given installation files whatsoever --DRM.

GoG staff also patches the games or add essential features to them, like the CPU bug fix in Heroes 3 (Heroes 3 HD is better of course, and does that too, but you get the idea)

As for Heroes Chronicles: All Chapters... I have it too, since I bought the entire Heroes of Might and Magic collection on GoG.

Buying them all you get those games at a discount, and the pack includes:

Heroes of Might and Magic 1
Heroes of Might and Magic 2
Heroes of Might and Magic 3
Heroes Chronicles: All Chapters
Heroes of Might and Magic 4
Heroes of Might and Magic 5

I haven't played Heroes Chronicles yet, but it is an expansion pack for Heroes of Might and Magic 3. More of a spin-off than a typical expansion pack, and it has its own storyline and 8 campaigns or so.

Hope you enjoy it, I haven't tried it for now --HoMM3 is making me live some of the most exciting moments I've ever had in a game, it is so awesome, superb, fantastic..... Still I think I am going to enjoy it a lot whenever I play the game.

I am still in the second chapter of the campaign, with the celestial faction. Sylvia is being my favourite character for now, along with Adelaide and the witch Mirlanda.

My best hero though is probably Sorsha. I don't know if those are the right stats -but superior tactis, lots of Power and Knowledge, and lots of defense against any kind of attack, from a skill (can't remember the name), not from the defense stat-. That works for me.

In regards to your question, sorry for not replying to it. I had totally forgotten, but it is exactly what Maurice said. Hope you are having a good Friday. See yah'

It turns out, they did. On my first day on the job, my manager told me that the company was unhappy with its current art direction and wanted me to “secretly” find a new art director among the art staff. So, on the pretense of introducing myself to everyone, I held one-to-one conversations with each artist.

Actually, they're not expansions in the real sense of the word. All 8 Heroes Chronicles games are stand-alone games and feature just the single campaign in them that covers the title of the game. Most of these 8 games have 8 maps, though 2 or 3 of them only feature 5 maps (these were special releases, if I am not mistaken). The maps are all played in chronological order, you never get a choice between which mission to play next.

All campaigns cover the trials and tribulations of Tarnum, the Immortal Hero, who goes from liberating his people (the barbarians) from their oppressors (the wizards of Bracada) to undoing all the mistakes he has made in his past as the ages go by. Each campaign you play as a specific faction, most often this will be Stronghold, but you also get to play as Haven, Rampart, Dungeon, Fortress and Academy. Although you do encounter Conflux, Inferno and Necropolis towns throughout the campaigns, you never play as those three races.

The game engine is that of Shadow of Death, which means combo artifacts and the like. Story-wise, they're all great games. Gameplay wise, I found many of the maps to be a bit on the small size, especially towards the end of a campaign.

I envy you Sarcyan.

You've only just discovered what is the best TBS game in history, and you can enjoy it to the fullest. I suppose your a younger player than me, and thus some older games might be an abstraction for you until you actually discover them yourself. But only just discovering Heroes III: I truly envy you

Of course I play Heroes III from time to time, but when it comes to new games I am, what you can call, "tainted". Every new TBS I discover is okay, but usually I always end up thinking: "It's nice, but Heroes III is better". Because it is. The only other games that could rival with it imo is the Disciples series (frankly speaking Disciples II because III is crab). Heroes III is fun, easy to get into, yet deep, and has clear rules. Like you said, it's like playing chess, without thinking too much about a myriad of invisible stats which complicate your experience. It's raw economy: get resources, buy troops and buildings, minimize your losses and conquer your enemy in a strategic way, in your own pace. And it has the most memorable visual style and music I've ever experienced in a fantasy themed game (though not the most original one of course). You can say the game also has a powerful nostalgia effect for me, the same which tells many players that every other sequel of their favorite game is horse cr@p, but that's how I see Heroes III (well, Heroes IV was quite a good sequel and I also enjoyed it).

And about Etherlords. Definitely try it. It's a unique game, probably the only fully 3D animated card game with actual battle animations that was successful (MtG guys never made such a game, though they've tried a few times). And it has incredible climate, a unique traditional fantasy setting (with it's own unique races and creatures), but with a twist: the cybernetic Synthets. And the music and sounds are also great. I suggest trying the first game in the series, because II is practically the same game (same engine and units), but with additional, let's call it, new race, with its "phantom" units, which are quite irritating if you ask me. The game was made by Nival. And truth be told, after Etherlords, they've disappointed me with Heroes V...

PS: If you "finish" the original game and it's expansions, try Horn of the Abyss. It's a fan made mod that feels like a true expansion pack (it really feels that way, it's very professional) with a new faction and other things. It made me play Heroes III a lot again.

Congratulations on your birthday –so.. happy belated birthday, bloodsucker-. Hope you had a marvelous day. I’d send the ice cream van off in your direction if it came round that day, but no dice.

I wonder if you can play online with the gameplay additions of HoMM3: Shadows of Death on Gameranger or it is just vanilla Heroes of Might and Magic 3. (I’ve never tried that service btw)

If you visit Gameranger’s webpage you can see the games they support. Apart from Heroes of Might and Magic series, Etherlords and Disciples are listed there. No King’s Bounty though

Very interesting, and I was wondering this myself and that explains why I have 8 executables for Heroes Chronicles: All Chapters. Thanks for clarifying that up for me. I think I am going to play all the HoMMaM titles in chronological order, which means it will be a while before I play them.

Additionally, today I’ve beaten the Long Live the Queen episode of the campaign. I expected it to have more scenarios and I also expected a very tough battle because they mentioned in the description that you can keep your strongest heroes from one scenario to the next.

It turns out that it has 3 scenarios but I managed to level up one of my heroes to level 24 (Sorsha, my best heroe by far) and another one (Adelaide) to level 21 and the like –dunno what I did to Richard but I’ve never seen him ever since the very first scenario.

Thing is… I spent a big amount of time levelling my heroes up just in case the last scenarios of the Long Live the Queen was very challenging but I realised now that I could save a fair amount of time if I didn’t go through that (I visited every single shrine, library, those trees that give you an extra level, shared all the spells I could by using the Scholar thing, etc etc etc, with every heroe, 8 in total)

Got a final score of 865.

My faction was very strong with those heroes, but I was so engaged with the game that I just couldn’t think of when that episode of the Erathia's campaign would end. Still I managed to make the most correct choices, artifacts wise, before starting each scenario. Does every episode of each campaign feature 3 scenarios?

In fairness, it wasn’t that bad for me.  Now I just began the devilish plan episode and I feel like hiring 8 heroes from the get go, which means that I improved quite a bit. Before that 3 or 4 heroes seemed to be as much as I could handle. Now I can handle more of them.

Another thing is that I am still not sure if that’s the best strategy, but it might well be.

Finally, I am also learning to effectively unstack and swap units, surrounding my ranged units with other creatures so they are protected, combine them smartly and stuff like that.
