WoG or HoA? Looking for the right mod to play

Hello. I've been playing all (almost) Heroes games and love them. I'd like to return back to HOMM III, and i found out that there are many different mods that act like expansions.

Found that In the Wake of Gods and Horn of the Abyss are the most popular, i guess.

Which one is better in your opinion (custom game-wise, i have no interest in campaigns)? And if there is another mod better then these, please let me know. I mean better in terms of balance, artifact/skill/spell/creature variety and overall better control of the game. I already installed the Complete Heroes III.

Thanks!

They are not mods. Play Heroes 3 vanilla, then when you feel a 10th town would please you, install HoTa. Then when you played 100 maps and need creative game, forget HoTa and Vanilla, install WoG.

HotA is a AB/SoD quality expansion - it adds a tenth town, a bunch of new artifacts, some balance changes (most noticeable: necromancy halved, reduced Phoenix growth) and more stuff to the game (campaigns, map locations, creatures banks, etc...). It really feels like an expansion made by NWC.

WoG on the other hand is at the same time a MOD and a platform for MODs. It brings some new creatures (repainted original creatures graphics and such, not the best on quality), lots of pre-made scripts (from adding a personalizable commander to your army to add new effects to secondary skills and more!). But the main 'power' of WoG lies in user, scripted maps and in MODs too. Check Salamandre '60 MODs for ERA' thread for instance.

Whatever suits you more

One more question. Does HotA have an option to "lock" one or more "computer players"? I'd like to play a large map that is for let's say 6 players, but i want only one or two opponents. That feature is in Heroes V, i'm sure you know what i mean.

This is for custom games, of course.

You'd have to open the map (make a copy, first) in the editor and edit the town of the specific colour that you want to remove. You cannot do this without looking at the map to my knowledge. But keep in mind that scenarios are designed around fixed things such as the number of players/AIs.

But the HotA crew and/or the community might make some larger maps with a smaller number of players in the future, though.

It seems that you have never played Hota yourself. This modification provides a real lot of gameplay and graphic changes, yet not radical and thus imbalanced as WoG. And especially graphic changes.

Orzie, I find HoTA graphics amazing, the concept, the town, the animations are perfect. Our friends the russians hit strong, congrats.

Myself I played heroes for 15 years. Regular maps, exceptional maps, even chinese maps. I am no more interested to be a spectator, after exhausting almost all possible situations. I feel I need to be active in what I do, modify, enhance, put my claws on.

From this point of view, HoTA has little interest for me, is not moddable at my level (actually none in hex editing). Is HoTA more balanced than WoG? Have you already played Tew4 or Alexander the great? Are they imbalanced? Aren't they wog?

This is why I told the guy, when he already played 100 maps (that takes a few years, right?), he may want to see something else, thus install wog.

Well, I just would explain a little more briefly.

If you want a new town, new map objects, new campaigns, new graphics, bugfixes of the original game, little gameplay improvements and overall neatness, Hota is your thing.

If you want to experiment with the gameplay using a lot of custom options, much wider modability with script language and also new graphics (yet not so polished) which can provide a considerably raised replayability, it's all about WoG.

No, these maps are brilliant, but like in HMM2, everything depends on the mapmaker, not the game itself, which I think is not that good for the current moment of time. Random maps suffer the drastic differences in terms of balance. Still, we can learn maps by heart and always want to try something new, while work like this is time-consuming if meant to be done professionally and thus not so abundant.

Everybody knows what you wanted to say, but it came off arrogant, and, ultimately, irrelevant.

Other than that, thanks guys!

I would advise you to be a little more open-minded. Everyone must admit that these modifications have different goals. The only thing I can say for sure - it's good that the both modifications are alive and developed further at the current moment.

@Orzie: Totally agree. It would be a real shame if HotA & WoG supporters hated each other and converted this forum into a war zone.

Luckily HotA, WoG and VCMI are all alive and kicking, let's enjoy them

Pfff Orzie, you keep saying that WoG team are thieves, and logically all further wog modders -there are already 4 posts of you in this forum repeating same disturbing music- then you come here playing the ambassador of diversity and open minded...I need fresh air and get out of hypocrite argues.

Well, let me answer for DrSarcasm - you sound a little arrogant even in the post I quote. No offense.
It's not the first time I understand your messages that way. Perhaps it's just the language barrier, but I doubt it.

And no, I usually don't call anyone a thief unless anyone states that he does not use this or that asset as a placeholder anymore. Not everyone can draw, and the mods can be played nicely even with some alien graphics, we can just use our imagination. But when the scale of the project comes around the "New Life of HMM3", using artists contribution is inevitable.

Heart for most people, but I think for Russians, maybe the liver is more important.

(Happy to see that the community is still alive. I haven't checked HotA out yet, but I'm sure it's fun and well-made.)
