When it all comes down to dust, I don't think, the counter-measures will be regulated on an individual initiative basis. Things like, don't leave your TV on stand-by, buy a hybrid car etc etc are nice, but they are not where the real juice is anyway. It's the big corporations that really count. Governments will start to regulate and inspect them more harshly (this is already happening but like most things, the change comes in a slow pace, so your position would be similar to saying "people will always be racist at heart" in 1870) and they will spontaneously care more also, because as greedy and selfish as they may be, capitalist tycoons are not stupid or uneducated and they have kids and grandchildren, too. Global warming comes fast, but not fast enough to catch us off guard. We will adapt.

"adapt". i'm dying to see what the human race will do, when they "adapt".

racism against human beings, and the very real threat the human beings have on the earth, and in return, it's effect on them, are two very seperate things, artu. what we're discussing is pretty much a reinvention of a wheel.

I'm not saying they will adapt to radically changed natural conditions, I'm saying they will adapt their system and means of production, so that the radical change in natural conditions wont occur. Under natural conditions, if we don't mess it up with our own CO, there is no life threatening change in the climate for the next 40000-50000 years.

lol, ok, artu. i'm guessing the t.v. show told you that? by that time, the earth will have dried up like a raisin, if human beings are still alive then, and actually living on earth.

No fred, the TV show didn't, it's very common knowledge. Unlike you, I don't take pride in preserving myself completely ignorant about things I'm being a wise-ass about.

why so testy? and besides, i'm a wise-ass no matter what. everyone who knows me, knows that.

but really, you using the phrase "common knowledge" to describe ANYTHING related to the earth and the issues facing it...

you DO realize, that people used to be burned at the stake, tortured, etc., because of "common knowlege" of witches, right?

oh ye of mighty faith in humanity and everything it self-servingly tells you... join me. take my hand, and walk with me into the land of reality.

lol, is THAT wise-ass enough for you?

You can not imagine how funny this comparison sounds to anyone with the slightest skill of logic and common sense. The 50.000 years is as common knowledge as the French Revolution took place in 18th century. You don't read it in one source, you read it in many sources. But all those sources are valid sources and nothing like the superstitious beliefs of medieval times. It's so boring to point something this obvious.

Well, global warming is very much a tragedy of the commons sort of problem so I am really pessimistic that we will be able to halter it before a lot of people end up getting screwed over. Environmental problems are a failure of governments infringing on private property. Had natural resources not been seen as an expendable public good (the incentive for long-term sustainability and responsible extraction is much greater for a private owner seeking to make the most out of his property), and had governments not ended nuisance law (which allowed individuals to sue polluters if they could prove they were causing damage) for the benefit of corporate interests (this was, again, seen as benefitting the "public good"...), then we might not have had a situation so severe.

Over time, we'll be moving away from the most toxic fossil fuels though which is already happening with fracking and renewable energy constantly becoming more competitive. So in the long term, we'll solve it without technology rather than regulation, but I think it's to late to stop a significant amount of people from getting screwed over by droughts and such. In those places, we can only adapt.

i just thought the video on this webpage belonged here. this is the kind of stupidity that humanity should be standing up to, and eradicating by any means necessary.

on a side note, i love the jon stewart show.

Gorgeous movies. But rather shame so sell it the occidental style, and none of those "stars" has enough of a charismatic voice to match the grandiose images.

Julia Roberts does it like reading the phone book.

Well, I guess the point is to create awareness rather than artistic perfection, so the stars do the trick. I watched it when a friend linked it on Facebook, I doubt she would have done the same if it wasn't for the stars.

top two polluters(if i remember correctly) reach deal on carbon emissions

"China and the United States made common cause on Wednesday against the threat of climate change, staking out an ambitious joint plan to curb carbon emissions as a way to spur nations around the world to make their own cuts in greenhouse gases."

i don't know whether to laugh, be angry, or just shake my head sadly in disbelief.

" a first-ever commitment by China to stop its emissions from growing by 2030."

2030? twenty-****ing-THIRTY? ...i'm going to be angry. that's what i'll pick.

"Administration officials said the agreement, which was worked out secretly between the United States and China over nine months and included a letter from Mr. Obama to Mr. Xi proposing a joint approach, could galvanize efforts to negotiate a new global climate agreement by 2015.

It was the signature achievement of an unexpectedly productive two days of meetings between the leaders."

9 months, and out of that 9 months, 2 days were all that was "productive". at least, between china and the president, an agreement can be made. not so, between the president, and the u.s. congress. there's that rage again.

"A climate deal between China and the United States, the world’s No. 1 and No. 2 carbon polluters"

so, i wasn't mistaken. this article just keeps getting better and better. my head is an oven.

"Unless Beijing and Washington can resolve their differences, climate experts say, few other countries will agree to mandatory cuts in emissions, and any meaningful worldwide pact will be likely to founder."

the word is FLOUNDER, dip****. yeah, the top two polluting ass****s of the world, will unite the rest of the polluting countries. seems legit. that's because we are the SHINING ****ING BEACONS. heat is creeping down neck, and into spine.

blah blah blah... i couldn't read the rest. i guess i should be somewhat satisfied/placated that china and the u.s. are trying. but at this point, it's like being satisfied that two children with down's syndrome can work out a simple math problem. so what? the two children still have down's syndrome, in the end.

how long, until the countries of the world work out the population problem, i wonder? 2050?

don't make me laugh all the way to the gallows.

Guess you all failed to see this movie:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSWdZVtXT7E

It has an important message:
Tchan, tchan, tchan "Mankind was born on Earth - it was never meant to die here"

The notion is so amazing it looks like a Creationist argument.

P.S. I finally saw it. Is a reasonable work of fiction but the subtext is worst then I tought. In the middle of all the pseudo-cientific bullsh*t we learn that ecologists are "keepers" (that will ban research and freethinking if allowed) and the planet is beyond salvation. All we can do is to choose betwen ending in misery or trust "them" to find us another place to live somewhere in the universe.

Years ago I would gladly accept the story as innocuous fiction but after hearing that 40% of the people in America (the country where this movie was made) is ready to accept this planet is only 6.000 years old, cause the "good book" says so; I get the feeling this crap has an hidden agenda, as paranoid as this may sound.

as this has to do with overpopulation, i figured this belonged in this thread.

because the links don't last forever: china lifted it's "one child" policy that has been in place since 1980, due to an older population. awesome. i don't see anything bad coming from this at all.
