Heroes V - Army Calculator

Hello,

I have recently created a program, which is, as the name suggests, a tool for calculating army size in Heroes V.

What does that mean, exactly?

Well, it serves two main purposes:
- one, it allows more hardcore players to calculate the exact amount of gold they need to purchase said amount of units or populations, easily.
- but most importantly, two, it allows players to make fairer duels.

Since the built-in duel presents in the game are lacking, at best, and preset creation is a pain, the most convenient method of doing duels, that I have discovered, is creating a tiny map with two heroes on it. You then customise the heroes and simply attack one another. But here comes the question: "How do you decide how many creatures you put in an army?" And this is what this is for.

Apart from just being a bit more sophisticated calculator, this program allows you to set a gold or week population limit, meaning you can arrange a total amount of gold to spend on units with a friend, and/or limit your maximum creature amount to a certain number of weeks population.

Download it here: Heroes V Army Calculator.exe

How to use the program (especially since there are no built-in instructions or readme file)?

I am aware the tool lacks explanation to its function. But I care little at the moment. Here is how it works:

The basics are pretty obvious - you select the desired faction from the drop-down menu on the top-left and all units change to that faction's. You then click on each type of unit you wish to have in the army and you should see the goldeny-orange frame switch to it, akin to the recruitment screen in the game.
The icons on the right of each creature correspond to those from the game, and therefore the gold icon shows how much a single unit, of the selected kind, costs and the population icon indicates the selected creature's weekly growth.
You can either use the up and down arrows on the "Number of creatures" field or type numbers manually and the "Gold cost" will tell you the amount of gold you need to pay for your indicated number of this creature (keep in mind that if you type numbers manually you may need to press "Enter" or click some other elements for the program to accept the final number).
The "Total Gold Cost" at the bottom simply sums up all creature costs and indicates the total amount of gold you will need to purchase all the desired numbers of creatures.

Below the faction drop-down menu, at the top-left, there are two check boxes "Citadel" and "Castle". Checking each one will, respectively, add 50% and 100% to the weekly creature growth, checking "Castle" will also disable "Citadel". Unchecking the boxes reverts the weekly growth.

At the top-right part of the window there are two check-boxes "Limit Gold" and "Limit Population". They can be used in unison or individually. They will, obviously, impose a limit on the amount of gold you can spend on creatures and/or the amount of creatures available for purchase.
For the "Limit Gold" option, you input the maximum amount of gold you wish used and whenever that limit is crossed a red label "Gold Limit Exceeded" will appear, but it will not actually stop you from increasing any number of creatures/
The "Limit Population" option, on the other hand, limits the maximum amount of creatures you can choose. When checking the option you have to input the number of weeks' population that you wish available, then the numbers next to the population icons will change to the total number of creatures available and you will not be able to go higher than them. These numbers are affected by "Citadel" and "Castle", as normal.

That should be it. I would seldomly check this thread, you can e-mail me any bugs and/or inaccuracies over at: dart_vaider@abv.bg .

I wished to make some grammar corrections to my previous post, as well as provide a new download link to a much better version of the tool, however due to its age I cannot readily edit it and contacting a moderator is too much of a bother.

I have decided to revise the code and fix the glaring problems the old calculator had.

Now checking "Citadel" works fine and I have added the options for population increasing buildings of each faction.
In the case of "Dungeon" the user has to manually set the bonus to the Tier 2 and Tier 3 creatures.

I would appreciate any opinions and reports of malfunctions.

Thank you all for the kind words!

I am posting a more updated version of the tool. Nothing major, minor code improvements - no bug fixes or feature implementations (although a testing tooltip has been removed, it somehow escaped earlier inspection).

God willing at some point in time I might add a little help button in the program and maybe tooltips on each creature picture, containing the creature's statistics and info.

I like the work, but, isn't it easier to make a duel map with unlimited population of all creatures to recruit in starting town (sinple script in H4, H5 should be even easier) and a limited amount of gold?
So that each player may build their army how they like...

Well, the hardcore player thing is still important however

Well, the motivation behind the application was to enable a player to easily and hastily to prioritise which creatures to buy. Since a person cannot afford to buy his entire weekly population on the first day without good gold management, he would need to figure out the best deal for a given price.
Using this tool he would be able to quickly surmise what would be his best spending plan. He'd be able to do so in a moment's notice without interrupting the flow of his game, especially if it is multiplayer.
