Vorbrin watched Den's demonstration out of the corner of his eye and made some mental notes as usual. Then he returned to studying the globe before him, slightly annoyed by Ciaran's readiness to divulge information.

"Map of the Pioneer..." he said thoughtfully, his eyes fixed squarely on the globe, "something tells me this isn't just a map. It is able to reveal more than mere geography, is it not, noble dragon?"

Den, who had been fishing for a name, sat back down with a slightly annoyed harumph and looked back at the map. He mumbled, "Of course I eat, but like all dragons, I can eat anything and still be able to function. Literally, anything. And yes, destroying things is how I eat them these days, feed my non-existence by making other things non-existent and all that poetic garbage stuff." It seems Den was getting a little impatient now...

The dragon of creation rubs at his snout subconsciously and chuckles at Ciaran's comment. -My nose, hmm? Well, that's the most interesting thing to come out of it, I guess...- The dragon sends, before looking back at the dwarf of dwarfing. -Now then, on to your question. The Maps of the Pioneer were wonderous artifacts created by the Old Gods many, many millennium ago and distributed to only the most avid of explorers and most trustworthy messengers. They have survived reckonings, wars, famines, custody battles and even the strange meteor from time to time, and they have always been the best friend of the wandering vagabond. Why, I remember back in the day that...-

This is when Den interrupted. "He asked what it was capable of, not for your life story Lucian." The black dragon snapped, making the dragon of creation wince and back away slightly, a small amount of shame in his eyes. "Now then, Vorbrin, to answer your question... yes. The maps are useful for locating far more than geographic markers. You can find just about anything you want, from a castle or other such constructs of mortals to the mortals themselves! Though, this one might be a bit broken. I'm not seeing the ch... I'm not seeing Lucian upon it, and if you will note, he is a rather large mountain... if it was able to locate creatures, we should see one of those moving. However, that's not all too important at the moment, as there is something else we have to find..." Switching over to draconic, Den commanded, "Map, find the nearest portal to a world of Creation."

When nothing happened, the dragons looked at each other, not saying anything but obviously concerned. Speaking again, Den commanded, "Map. Find us the nearest portal." And at that, the floating globe scanned and zoomed in on the mountain the party was standing on. For a moment, the map almost glowed red before fading into a light blue. The map slowly zoomed out and focused on the rest of the word, before three grey circles formed, one in a desert, one farther in the mountains and one next to a lake in the near bye forest. The dragons exchanged a second glance, and Den mumbled, "A bit more broken than I thought..." he mumbled in common. He then addressed the party again.

"So then, there is a little problem... while the map is still able to handle general commands, it seems to be incapable of differentiating specifics. This causes a bit of a problem, since that means we have three different possible paths to take... and only one of them would take us where I need to go. So then, since you have agreed to accompany me, I am more than willing to let the three... four of you weigh in on which one we should go to." The dragon had originally been keeping Ciaran out of that count, but realized that might not go over too well. "And Lucian... you should get to work fixing that climate." Den said, giving the larger dragon the impression of a stern look.

The dragon of creation nodded, a bit sheepish, and started to walk off. -Thank you for the help little ones... stay safe. Please.- And then, with a small flash of light, the dragon was actually gone.

Nathanial couldn't understand a word of Draconic and thus couldn't understand why both creatures looked so concerned at first, though he studied the globe and its movements in an attempt anyway. After Den switched to Common things got a little clearer.

"Can we even be certain it can be relied upon so far?" A thought occurred. "Could it have been tampered with, or is it simply damaged?"

He considered reminding the others that their foe the Trapmaster may have left them near it intending for them to find it and subsequently wander into trouble, then remembered that Vorbrin had reacted negatively to a retelling of their recent exploits in front of Den and kept his mouth shut.

"Considering the state we found them in, I highly doubt that, Nathaniel." Ciaran said with a smirk on her face that some would consider exceptionally mirthful, but some others stupid.

"Anyway, what are our options, sir dragon? And since you said you only want to go one way, why would we go another? What's out there in those places the map showed, Den?" Ciaran asked. She had the feeling Den was hiding something. Maybe that's just the way dragons of nothingness said? It sounded like he was reluctant to share something, however.

Feather just figured the dragon was using some dragonly powers to vanish, and left it at that.

"Well, we could go another way if we choose badly. I wouldn't mind knowing what's around those areas too. And if we have a hard time choosing where to go, we could draw designs on the ground to represent each one, and I could toss one of my darts in the air. Whichever point the dart lands closest to, we go there. We would just have to be careful not to have any of our heads be the destination."

"No, Feather. Decisions like that are not to be left to blind chance. Divine providence, maybe, but not chance. And besides, Ciaran's questions have... merit. I do not speak draconic, dragon Den, so I feel at a loss. What were you looking for? And what is this place you need to go?... even though it was implied that you will travel eith us and not vice versa." Vorbrin said all this in his usual level voice, as if he was stating facts with no opinion in the matter.

The dragon sighs at the questions, mumbling, "I haven't the time for this..." Under his breath before sitting down to have what he assumes will be another long conversation.

"The map is simply damaged. If it had been tampered with, it would not have responded to my commands at all. Maps of the Pioneer are... rather touchy, if they are tampered with. They are a semi-sentient artifact, after all, and they are just smart enough to know how to throw a tantrum, but not how to stop." The dragon seemed to be... more amused by that than angry. "We can assume that it leads to where I need to go... however, we cannot rely on it to give us warning as to what is coming."

He then looked over at Ciaran. "If I knew where the portals led, then I would not be asking for a choice by committee. As it stands, however, I do not know which of the three portals marked on the map is the one I need... only what we might encounter along the way to them." With a sigh, he added, "As for what is out there, well... it depends on which way we go."

Now talking to everyone, Den said, "The portal to the dessert will likely be the hardest one on your bodies... at least, if I remember right and you fleshy creatures need water and food to survive." The dragon chuckled, shaking his head slightly. "Likely, not very much lives there due to how arid and dusty everything is... but if something does, it would be adapted to the environment." Standing up and walking over to the map, Den poked the portal in the mountains. "This one will likely have the most treacherous terrain, with the narrow rocky roads and winding ways, but also will likely have the fewest creatures along it, and places where you could find food... so if you can climb, I would recommend going to that one first. And finally," The dragon pointed at the portal in the forest, "The forest is likely teaming with life and food, and the worst environmental hazard you would have to worry about would be some tangled brush and maybe a marsh or two. However, not everything that found its way through the portal will be exactly... friendly, if you catch my meaning."

It was at this time that Den addressed Vorbrin, "Not that it is exactly any business of yours, since you were the ones that agreed to accompany me and you did not demand to know everything, but I am trying to find my wife." Something seems to be missing from that statement, though you aren't exactly sure what it would be. "Oh, but just in case you were wondering, yes, I do remember that you are lost adventurers trapped in this plane... and your best chance to get home is to follow and help me. Simple, no?" That, on the other hand, seemed to be the whole truth. "Now then, what else do you want to know?"

As Vorbrin answered he raised his voice slightly for the first time since the group's arrival to the plane. The mask seemed to amplify his voice even further, giving a booming edge.

"No, dragon, it is not simple. It is not simple because you are twisting our agreement. So I will say it again: we did not agree to accompany you, we agreed to let you accompany us. You want to find your wife Fine by me. But that is not our priority. I believe that you do not wish to bring us to harm, Den. But I will not be lied to. In fact, you could say I made a career of not being lied to. And unless you tell us exactly how helping you will help us, you might just find out how I moved up so quickly in my career, curse or no curse."

Nathanial wasn't as keen at detecting falsehoods as Vorbrin, but he knew the Exquisitor had an excellent sense for them and was willing to accept his superior's senses on the matter if not his bad manners.

"Exquisitor, Den, please...there is no need for this, I am certain we—all of us—" Nathanial included Den with a nod of his head "—can work together on our separate goals to mutual advantage."

He addressed the living hole in space directly now. "But Den, I must ask you to be as complete and accurate as possible. We have agreed to protect you while you travel with us; we cannot do this if you leave anything unsaid. I can assure you on my honor as a Paladin that Mystra has shown me the essential good nature of each of my companions; you need not concern yourself that they will knowingly let the information bring you harm."

Ciaran was satisfied by Den's reaction and internally preparing a case to try to get the party to go through the forest or the mountains where she could enjoy some physical activity she was good at, be it fighting or climbing. She was starting to grow bored of standing around, but she felt professional enough to not show it too much. She just let her posture hang a bit, maybe she yawned. You never know. Okay, she yawned, telling Ciaran's story can't always be about her holding her team mates dangling from a dragon's nose or punching things, you know.

The dragon almost seems to snarl at Vorbrin for a moment, before sighing and giving a chuckle instead. Apparently shaking off any of the ill intentions the Exquisitor's show of force had almost wrought due to Nathaniel's quick tongue, Den said, "For a moment there, I had almost forgotten how very inquisitive you free-willed mortals are... So then, you want to know how I can help you? Well, I, while I still had my body, had... Access to one of the three primal powers of the Void. Helping me find my wife so that she can fix me would put one of those aformentioned powers in your debt, and they would easily be able to send you home, planar lock or no. And, before it comes up, having powerful beings in your favor is both the simplest and the fastest way to get anything on this... Sometimes infuriating plane." The dragon added that last part in a grumble with a sideways tilt of his head. Den also mumbled something to himself afterwords before shuffling his wings, straightening his back and re-focusing on the party.

Giving Vorbrin a look in particular, the dragon asked, "Is there anthing else I can help you with?"

Feather's hand passes through the zoomed in section of the map, and a little glowing square forms on her hand, with a dot showing where she is and a top-down view of the surrounding location. Den notices this with a side long glance and mumbles, "Well that's new as well..."

"You know, me and feather are very strong and fast, you know. We could hoist you guys up, just right on the mountain." Ciaran says furtively, nudging the party towards a decision. "Otherwise, we've faced greater foes than some alien woodland creatures. I'm sure we could take those on."

"One thing I do know for sure is that we are entirely incapable of taking on great periods of drying out and then not eating. So I suggest we stay away from the desert unless we have some camels and some supplies."

Momentarily distracted, Nathanial went over to examine Feather's "new effect" and the map as a whole. "I agree we may have some concern with supply: though I can request a boon of water from the Lady of Mysteries it may be wise to locate a mundane source before we attempt a desert crossing." Nathanial shifted his attention a little more to the map.

((How far away are these portals gnomes? Is one obviously closer to us or another portal or are we basically in the center of an equilateral triangle? If two of the portals are closer together we might want to hit one of those first so we don't have to go as far to hit the next one. And does my character see any settlements on the map, either near us or any of the portals?

If it makes any difference, I only have +4 in Survival but Create Water is a level 1 spell for Nathanial.))

The dragon looked back at the map, gesturing without actually touching the magic itself. "I would also like to add that while the portals are almost an equal distance apart from one another, the portal in the mountains is on the side of the rain shelf that favors the forest... or basically, that if we went to the forest and found that the guess was wrong, that we would have less climbing than if we went into the desert." Thinking about that for a moment, Den added, "And with that, I believe that I have my own proposal to make. If you are willing to stay with me for, oh... ten days, we could likely explore all three portals and see if any of them lead to where I need to go. If this works for you, then we just have to decide which order to go in."

"I believe that, if we wanted to be as efficient as possible, we should go to the forest first, the mountains second and then, if absolutely necessary, we can go to the dessert. This should give you time to get acclimated to the creatures and climate, time to gather resources before the possibly more sparse legs of the journey and finally, more time to get used to each other." Den looked at Vorbrin when he said that last bit, featureless face giving away nothing.

"And as for your new tattoo... well, it is very useful, and the magic of the map has always been harmless, so I wouldn't be too concerned with it." He said to Feather, chuckling a bit to himself.

((Each portal is about 3 days from where you are now, and around 3 days from each other... though as mentioned farther up, the trip from the mountains portal to the dessert one would be a bit more difficult than going from the mountains to the forest.

And with Nathaniel's ability to make water, you would just be using survival for food. ))
