Nathanial could sense that Den had tensed up at the question, and seemed to be ready to snap back a reply, but the paladin's tone and the small bit of respect in Nathanial's voice calm the dragon's temper, and he can feel that small sense of danger fade away once more. In an even voice the dragon answered, "Normally I would not take kindly to an accusation that my wife is ignorant... But I know that you did not mean any offense by it. So to answer your question, this world was the perfect place for Asper to return to. It's relatively young, it's been a mere century or so since it was properly formed, and the factions are only starting to explore and wander its unmined tracks. Its portals are also very, very important to all three factions, most of them lead to key trade worlds, strongholds and troop relays, making this world valuable for Asper twofold. On one side, armies will just start flooding in to take control, so Asper can lose himself among them before anyone of true age or power arrives that could recognize him, and the damage he does to one faction can be blamed on the other factions without drawing suspicion. Secondly, this planet is... almost too valuable. Either the world's surface will be torn asunder in the coming, destroying all record of his presence, or, well, it will not be the first planet completely eradicated in this war, and that will accomplish much the same thing as far as Asper is concerned.

"As for why that's important for my wife... I have taken painstaking measures to ensure that my enemies cannot find me, which unfortunately also masks me from my allies, my wife included. If I can accomplish it, then you had better bet Asper can do it, and likely better. There were other servants connected to the primal powers, and most were divine, so while my wife may technically be greater than him... She does not yet have a reason to be looking for him, and it would be difficult for her to accomplish regardless. He's a slippery snow when he wants to be."

The dragon then addressed Feather, "I am not certain why he gave you assistance. Perhaps he has further uses for you, perhaps some part of the old hero is still in that broken mind of his, but all I know is that we cannot trust or rely on him. Not anymore, at least." Looking between the party, Den sighed, rested his head on his claws and asked, "So, do you have any more questions for me?"

"I examined the map on friend Feather's hand and was unable to discover any method of magical tracking," Nathanial offered. "But there are few other methods our mutual acquaintance could be using, and I am uncertain if my skills in that area would be sufficient to discover such things given the nature of their source."

The dragon looks between the two of you and sighs slightly. "Worrying about it or not, I will leave that to you. If Asper wanted you dead, I'd think that he could have done it by now, don't you? And the map is still useful in and of itself. Whatever you decide, I leave the choice to you."

Now, this has been a tiring day. I suggest we have some rest. Dragon Den, you seemed to have the worst of it, so you should sleep through the night. The four of us will take watch in turns. First will be sister Ciaran, then sister Feather, then myself and finally brother Nathaniel. We'll continue our journey in the morning."

"Aye, continuing in the morning... I shall see you then." The dragon sighs, his head coming to rest on the ground and sending spider-like cracks through the wet dirt. The cave's floor isn't exactly mud, but it is almost like wet sand to the touch, so while it was a good surface to rest on and surprisingly comfortable for such, it wasn't exactly something a clean-freak would choose first hand. Fortunately the majority of the party members remembered to purchase a sleeping mat, right? ((I seriously don't know if you guys did. If not... buahahahahah, my evil plan to get sand in all of your clothes has come to fruition! Your armor/ shirt shall never be comfortable again! ))

((Until I see some perception rolls, I will tell you guys what happens in general on the shifts later. For now, just the things that you will notice no matter what.))

Feather: The storm seems like it will never die, and with how heavy the rain has become, the river you were camping next to has begun to flood. It is about halfway up the riverbank already, and if you had to guess then you would guess that it will reach the cave entrance if it keeps up like this. Good thing too, if anyone was following your trail, the storm will completely obliterate it before they can truly find you, and with how the cave slopes ever so slightly up you shouldn't have to worry much about your temporary shelter flooding.

About ten minutes after your shift begins, however, something that might cause a bit of worry does happen. On the back of your hand, the map flares to life, illuminating the cave for you momentarily before dulling down. You see a small dot on it, red on the map's general blue, in a small grove not too far away from where the party currently rests. The words, "We need to talk." Appear beside it, and then fade away almost as quickly as they had come, leaving only the red dot behind.

Vorbrin: The storm still rages during your shift, lightning crackling across the night sky, and rain pouring down into the banks of the river. You notice that the river itself has  flooded up to the mouth of this small cave you have huddled yourselves up in, and if your footprints along the bank hadn't been destroyed by the torrent, then this would surely wash them away. And it is now that your voidwalker "friend" has begun to stir...

Feather looked around in her bag, and soon pulled the journal from within, handing it over to Nathanial. She then went about making her preparations for her bit of rest she would get prior to her watch shift.

The thought of heading out to meet the one who had been communicating with her through the map, and doing so one on one, gave Feather a bit of pause, but she decided it might be worth while to do so. Taking hold of her pack, she set off to the location that was shown.

Nathanial took the palm-sized book to an out-of-the way spot in their camp and examined it in what light was available to him. Not having a great deal in the way of identification magic available to him at the moment, he requested the Lady of Mysteries to reveal to him any evil nature the book might possess ((yes I'm Detecting Evil on the book)) and examined it for anything out of the ordinary.

And time for the update:

__________________________________________

Vorbrin notices some sniffling and snuffling from a beast above the cave, but whatever it is, it doesn't come in sight or enter the cave. The void walker is now looking about, and glances baelfully in the dwarf's direction. Despite being next to Den, she doesn't seem to be aware of the dragon's presence.

__________________________________________

Ciaran's watch goes quietly, nothing really attempting to disturb her ((DG didn't post anything. ))

__________________________________________

Feather's watch seems to be silent for the most part, with only the map really drawing her attention. Den shifts slightly in his sleep, but beyond that the cavern is silent. Coming out, she is able to use her survival skills and the map to track the location being pinged, and she is finally struck by how very unnoticeable the cave is on her way out. Especially given how heavy the rain has become, and how heavily the river is rushing, it just looks like one more sloping river bank from above. She also notices that the river obliterates her tracks in just seconds after she steps out.

It takes her about five minutes to reach the clearing, which was oddly calm. There was only a light drizzle of rain, barely enough to keep her wet, and soon even that was gone, giving her full sight of the stars as the clouds cleared away in just this one place. The first voice to greet her in this place was a deep-throated growl, and from the darkness the form of the beast who had escaped from the party materialized. It slowly began to approach her, five of its six legs creeping and scraping along the ground, sinking into the wet earth while the other was held protectively against its stomach. Almost ten feet from Feather the beast stops its advance, curling up on the ground subserviently while a ball of shadows formed to its right. Almost as if he was stepping out from the darkness, the trapmaster reached out and placed his hand on top of the beast's head and looked to her.

"... Well now. This is a bit more complicated than I had hoped." He said, looking about the clearing. "Came alone? Now why on all the worlds would you go and do that?"

Nathanial's inspection of the journal doesn't really pull up anything. He knows that some soldiers and commanders were seen carrying small black books that were far too small to be spellbooks. He also knows that they were constantly writing in them, but his glance through the journal didn't find any writing of any kind. Well, except the front page... that one had a blot of ink that looked different every time Nathanial flipped to it. About the fifth time he looks at that page, however, he finds something written in... is that sphynx? though it's mostly a spoken language, Nathanial can recognize the words almost perfectly.

The page simply stated, "If ye can comprehend this, then there is just one question for ye. Who be ye? What is your answer?"

Almost going straight to her weapons, Feather held back the urge to send weapons flying the trapmaster's way. She took a step back, then returned to her original position. Looking the two over, she wasn't too sure why she came alone either.

"Well, I wanted to meet the one who, for some reason, helped us through parts of that cave. And, um, how is this complicated?"

Nathanial considered the journal speculatively for a moment. Plainly the writer knew the book was no longer in the hands of their comrades. He did not think it was unreasonable to assume the book had some sort of tracking magic on it akin to Feather's map—the divination effect?—but it was equally likely the writer had some mundane method of discerning the same thing—possibly the voidwalkers had missed a check-in, or this very question was a password of sorts.

It did not matter. Nathanial dug out quill, ink, and some parchment in case he needed to make notes. Taking the quill and ink, he wrote back:

[sphinx]I am Brother Nathanial of the Order of Mystra. I was attacked without provocation by several of your associates. As your people and mine have no previous quarrel, I would like to know the reason for this.[/sphinx]

Feather

The trapmaster sighed at the question. "It was supposed to be simple. I draw you in by spreading rumors and stealing a few things, have you chase me from abandoned ruin to abandoned ruin, get you to activate that portal trapped inside of me, and then have you chase me around a bit more once we came here before sending you home... however. That plan went out of the window when you met the dragons." He scratched the top of the "dog's" head and slowly shook his head. "Not that it would have gone easily with the Void's reaction to my return regardless, but still."

Nathanial

After about ten minutes the writing in the journal just seemed to disappear. Still responding in sphynx, the journal, or whoever owned it, wrote back, "That is not the correct andswer. There is no Mystra, therefor no order. Take the question seriously in the future, and make not jokes. Now, riddle me this... Brother Nathanial who?" Whoever it was didn't seem to be all too concerned about the reports of the attack, as far as their writing conveyed.

Nathanial

The book is silent for a few minutes again, and then responds, There is still no sphynx named Brother Nathanial that dwell on our vision, and no entry has been made through the vision barrier. However, You are not allies of the _____. Therefore, you should grant this book as a gift to the eternals once you find them. Thou art not our enemy. Do not make this change. This message does not fade, and Nathanial feels something shift under the cover of the journal.

Knowing the sphynx language as you do, you know that it isn't exactly the most... precise. Something something riddles, something something pretentious cat-people and all that. He knows that the word vision is interchangeable for dreams, a foretelling, a plane of existence or reality. He also knows that the space was purposeful, seeing as there is no word in sphynx for oblivion. As for the Eternals... well, that was something to ask the prisoner about, likely.

Feather

The trapmaster sighs at that question and shakes his head slowly. "Of all the things for you to pick up on from what I said." Patting the void creature's head, sending it away, he looked up at the night sky and stated, "The night sky is beautiful here, no? I've spent millennia looking up at it, watching new stars and new worlds come into being every day, and it has always brought me joy. Now there are so many worlds that I do not remember... and too many that I cannot find."

Slowly the clouds began to fill in the small hole over this clearing, hiding the night sky once more and causing rain to fall. "When the dimension lock went up, I made sure I would have some way to return. I had to set the trigger for something traumatic, something that my body would expend all of its effort trying to avoid, so I made it my mortal wounding. And then I waited for a small company of untested heroes to pop up. True heroes might have 'accidentally' killed me, and a villain was not an option because I had to be sure I wouldn't release a plague upon your world by donating parts of my power to a maniac who would threaten your reality. So I waited for you.

"When you almost killed me, my magic and body expended almost everything they had to ensure that the portal trapped within would open and bring me to... a place I thought was safe. It appears that I was wrong... and that I waited too long." Looking back down at Feather, Asper stated, "I believe I have time for two more questions. So what else do you wish to know?"

((Are there words in sphinx for "void" or "creation" while we're at it?))

Nathanial digested this for a moment; the writer on the other side thought he was a sphinx.

That could go well or poorly for the party. But which way would do what was unclear to him, so despite his conscious berating him for the omission Nathanial didn't try to correct the writer. He suspected they were trying to tell him there were no sphinx by his name on this plane but did not disallow the possibility that the writer was making a 'the prophets did not predict your coming' statement either.

He was reasonably certain the conversation was over now, so Nathanial took a moment to ensure that the shifting cover didn't herald the book suddenly sprouting fangs and then closed it. He went to find the Exquisitor.

"Exquisitor, I have examined the book friend Feather acquired. What I read mentioned 'eternals' are you aware of any such beings?"
