Nathanial peered at the effect on Feather's hand, searching for signs that it was being used to spy on them remotely—and, if possible, a way to remove or disable that effect. Aside from the scroll that had caused the effect in the first place, there was precious little else they had picked up that could be responsible for broadcasting the details of their company—the spell Lucian gave them perhaps, but as the Exquisitor believed the map spell on Feather's hand was already being used by the entity watching them for communication, it seemed a more likely suspect. Nathanial hadn't forgotten the Trapmaster had deposited them so near to its source, either.

As far as Nathaniel can tell, while the map is obviously magic and obviously scrying, the only thing that it should be able to do is scry the area around you... so likely, something else is influencing the magic in a subtle way. Examining it closer, however, you are the one that notices that just beyond this rock slide is where the map begins again, and that the messages, and sounds of combat, disappear at the exact same moment.

"Dear brother Nathaniel. So knowledgeable, yet so naive. We already know the device is able to hear us. Otherwise, it would not have responded to our commands. And we know that it is connected to someone who's sending us messages through it. So, it is a good guess that if the device can hear us and is linked to a third party, it may be able to transmit back what it heard. The only question that remains is who does it transmit to."

Ciaran smirked her smirk and cracked her knuckles. "Got your back, Vorbrin, my man." She looked around the pile of rocks. "May not be an easy feat, but I'll see what I can do." She tied a rope around her shoulder and carefully tried to scale the pile of rocks.

She carefully looked around for places that would be secure enough to tie the rope and if the thing wouldn't come crashing down if someone tried to climb up that way.

The tumbled rocks seem to tremble under her feet and a few slide away, but Ciaran is able to scale her way to the top. It does not look like there is anywhere to secure the rope at the top, and even here the illusion blocks your vision of the other side. You did manage to make a trail to the top over some of the safer rocks, and if you can find something on the other side of the wall the others should be able to climb over a little easier, though they still need to be cautious about it.

Going over to the other side, you can't see too much beyond the entrance to the cavern. Once you reach the bottom of the pile, you can see some flames off in the distance that illuminates a few stalactites and stalagmites nearby. You can't really make out what the flames are using for fuel, but from the sounds that you heard before you can be relatively sure that they are likely the cause of the screaming...

Feather watched as Ciaran maked her way up and over the rocks. The rocks that slid down obviously seemed to worry her. Relief came upon her face as she saw Ciaran succeed in the task.

She put up a nervous smile, and looked to the others. "So, um, who is going next?"

She threw her rope over from the other side. "It's safe, guys. Do be careful. Go one at a time, the rope is in my hands. Also, if you screams, that is not me."

She braced herself to help with lifting anyone up that went along with the rope.

After a brief moment of silence, Ciaran suddenly had a thought. She smirked a very smug and devious smirk. She then shouted back at the rest of the party. "Nathan, why don't you come over here, first? You know, if someone were to fall or get injured, you could be there to help them, while Vorbrin could help anyone that fell or got injured as they were climbing up."

Ciaran's plan was a good plan, but it also meant that Feather would be going after Nathanial. And what if the plan didn't exactly work out? What if there was a cave-in, and said injured person was underneath a pile of rocks. That wouldn't be too convenient. Feather sighed, and tried to put such thoughts out of her mind. She would go with Ciaran's plan.

((Assuming Nathanial made it))

Feather stepped up to the rope, and slowly took it in hand. She just stood there for a couple seconds, talking to herself. "This is not the tree. This is not the tree." She thought about removing her armor to help herself out, but it had not hindered her in the least lately, so she just left it on. Her other hand took hold of the rope, and she tried to put out of her mind the rock slippage that had already occurred. "Not the tree!" she let out, and with that she started up and over the rocks.

Nathanial makes it, though with the way he scrambles up the rocks and knocks a few more of the easy handholds out it seems like he was just barely able to do so. Feather, though, is able to climb up without any real difficulty, despite the scarcity of things for her to hold onto, and the three are just left to wait for Vorbrin to climb on over. Behind them, the fires seem to be growing less powerful, and everything seems to be as silent and still as the dead of night.

Vorbrin watched everyone climb in silence. He noted Ciaran's interest to be alone with Nathaniel even if only for a few moments, but made no comment deciding that despite her motives, her logic was sound.

When everyone was over the wall he took off his chain shirt while muttering to himself so no one could hear.

"More climbing. Great Grumbar, why must you test me so? First I fall on my head, then the cave collapses on my head. If this keeps up, this whole wall will just keel over and crash on my head..."

Finally, he put his armor in his backpack, grabbed the rope and began his climb.

((Climb check = 25. I think I just jumped over it. ))

Once on the other side Vorbrin puts back on his shirt.

"Is everyone ready to move on then?"

Feather was obviously pleased with herself upon making it. She tried to assist Ciaran in assisting Vorbrin over, but that didn't work out too well. However it wasn't needed, seeing as how Vorbrin clearly out performed her with the climb. She waited for Vorbrin to get ready and ask the question.

"Yeah. I'm ready."

Ciaran tried to say something as Nathaniel came climbing over, but her mind went blank and she just kept focusing on the job. Vorbrin showed he knew his climbing better than anyone. As she wrapped the rope around her waist again, she looked around again. Everyone was around. She tried to say something funny, but nothing came up. She donned her old gauntlets again. She was ready to go. "I'm good to go, Vorbrin." she said.

Where everyone else had struggled to even traverse the rocks, Vorbrin the dexterous dwarf (which is not a paradox, I swear) manages to get over it doing a cartwheel and backflip. Like a total badsnow. This reunites the party and, striking their torches as the lights of the fires appear to be going out, the party continues on to find the next large cavern... and the red of the walls is not from the mountain itself.

Bodies and limbs decorate the floor around them, many flung to the side and laying like wheat in the harvest, while others were blown up or merely torn apart by some kind of unnatural force. Some fires from the conflict that occurred here continue to burn, charring and consuming the cloaks that the human-like beings scattered and placed in piles are wearing to ash. Something about these beings is off, though whether it's their general lanky proportions or the fact that all of them have silver hair, silver eyes and no discernible gender or personal differences that you can see, or that there are a good half hundred slain in this chamber alone is entirely up to you. To your right you see the remains of a great hound, armored in plate like scales and sporting the stumps of six legs and impaled on a row of stalagmites. The three trainers beside it are likewise dismembered, their blood making a rather obvious pool on the ground that slowly continues to expand. Likely, these... people and their pet were alive a short time ago.

Ahead of you, that trail of boot marks, now traced in crimson instead of dust, continues to move on, past the piles of corpses, just disappearing when they reached the shredded legs of a massive being are that are just barely visible at the edge of your torchlight, telling you that there is likely more around the bend. On Feather's hand, a message flashes, "Watch out for stragglers. I'm certain a few escaped in the midst of that battle." It appears that your benefactor, whoever or whatever they are, is still perfectly alright for the time being... though after this display, whether that is a good or bad thing is debatable.

((And now you may refer to the map. Each fire is a collection of 2-3 burning corpses, for reference.))

((Perception = 10))

Nathanial examined the battlefield for signs of illusion once more, calling on Mystra again to warn him of the presence of evil. ((Spamming Detect Evil.)) Assuming all was as it appeared to be, he looked for signs of recognizable spells: checking the ceiling for obvious blast marks and the floor for dropped spell components or other clues to what magic, if any, had been used in the fight. Lastly, he examined the corpses of the slain, looking for faction marks. He kept his sword drawn, as a precaution should any of the seeming-dead rise.

((Assuming this isn't all an elaborate illusion—

Knowledge: the Planes check for the human-ish creatures:
Knowledge: the Planes = 20

...and the six legged thing:
Knowledge: the Planes = 12

Spellcraft and Knowledge: Arcana to figure out what spells, if any, caused the damage.
Spellcraft = 26 – Nat 20!
Knowledge: Arcana = 10

Also, if I can get a good look at one of the cloaks and check it for distinguishing marks—a coat of arms, for example, magic runes or anything that could be used for identification—I do that too.))

Feather's gaze went all across the scene. She could not recall seeing any beings of the sort that were currently here. Neither alive nor dead. She caught the message on her hand, and read it to herself.

"It says to watch for stragglers. Can't imagine there would be any after this, but..."

She then started looking around the area for anything not dead.

Nathanial is able to identify that these outsiders are void walkers. When the void invasion occurred, these were the most common soldiers that were sent pouring into the material plane. They seemed to belong to three factions, with those of the pure black coloration being enemies, and the grey and white haired ones being allies. These ones are a bit odd, even for outsiders. Typically, a void walker will be nearly indistinguishable from a human, with their eye color and pupils, which are horizontal slits, being the only real difference. This gender neutral version is... strange.

During the war, the void walkers functioned as squads of highly mobile soldiers, only very rarely fighting in actual armies. Many generals and rulers were targets of their assaults during the void's invasion, which earned them the titles assassin and the silent hand. Very few of their attacks were noticed until they occurred, and they seemed to have very little interest in talking before going in for the kill. One habit that was noticed is that these assassins always left some kind of marking that always consisted of for objects that were related in some way and arranged in a line, left in plain sight for their target's viewing pleasure. Despite the warning, there were almost no survivors of their attacks.

From your friend's  notes, you would know that the emblems on the unburnt cloaks belong to the void faction, which sent a token force to assist the mortal plane against oblivion. Or at least, that's what you were told by the forces of creation. As far as the mortal plane was concerned, the armies of the void were the largest army of outsiders to stride on its soil since the wars at the beginning of creation, so if it was a token force, one would shudder to think of the number of soldiers they left in here. The soldiers of the void never really seemed to care about the mortal plane, and acted as if they were only there to stop oblivion's invasion. They were bland, humorless, featureless bunch, almost as if they had just been born only to fight the war and didn't expect to survive it.

The giant is a frost giant, though why it is here instead of the mortal plane (where it belongs) is uncertain. Maybe when the void invaded, some mortals from the material invaded back, and this is just where it ended up? Whatever the case, the large, blue skinned giant is most definitely deceased, kaput, no more. This is a once giant, and you should demand a refund.

Feather doesn't spot anything out of the ordinary, though in the tunnels beyond your torchlight she hears the sound of a boot on the floor, rapidly retreating out of earshot. Maybe is was their benefactor...?
