Trump is asking Russia to hack into US emails to try to uncover more nasty information on Clinton. This election truly is an election of firsts. Asking foreign entities to perform espionage is a new one. To boldly go where no man has gone before.

I have been hunting more information on this context in the last ten seconds of this video, posted today. This is of course referring to Hillary and what seems to be another wikileak coming up this Saturday.

oh is this the third main release?

Nah, that is not what happened.  First of all it is obvious that he was joking about what he said.  Second, he suggested Russia find the 33000 emails Hillary deleted from a server that no longer exists.

Hillary used an illegal private server to conduct all personal and State Department emails.  The FBI said it believes Hillary was hacked and is working under that assumption.  The FBI said Hillary's email server was less secure than gmail and had no full time security staff.

Trump was pointing out through a joke the fact that Russia and other nations probably already have all of her emails.

Besides, Hillary said all the emails she deleted were about yoga and her daughter's wedding.  Surely she is not lying about that too, eh?

Hilliary is the criminal, not Trump.  She is being protected by the criminal Obama and the criminal Lynch and the criminal democrats in the Senate & House.  The Obama administration is corrupt from the top down.

I don't know to outside observes such as here in the UK both candidates seem rotten to the core, just an argument of which is worse.

@Elodin:
Thank you for the information.
I think whether or not he is joking is dubious. He was probably joking and being serious at the same time. I mean,  it's not like he'd be unhappy if somebody turned over damning information (nor should he be).

@Tsar:
The election is very uninspiring

It's fashionable to complain about the politicians, but much less to point a finger at those who put them in office. Politicians try to make themselves appealing to a plurality of voters - blame them if this is what "appealing" looks like.

It's also very easy to blame the voters, especially when they can't pick the candidates. You have a system, the system offers you a bag of rotten apples and says "pick and bear the responsibility for your choice", then you do what? I suppose if someone suggests to tear down the system forcefully you'll be even more scandalized.

Politicians respond to incentives. For example, if voters really hated lying, enough to change whom they support, those who lie shamelessly and egregiously would be selected against. Something similar applies to policy positions as well.

No, but if voters' preferences were strong enough, they could still threaten politicians into acting how they want, even under the current system. For example, if there had been a real threat that voters would abandon the GOP frontrunners during the primary and gone for, say, Rand Paul, the primary would've gone differently to begin with. The same goes for the general election. The frontrunners act the way they do because they know that most of their supporters aren't going to leave - and that's because, terrible as they are, those frontrunners are roughly what those supporters want. They complain, but how much can they really hate them if they don't vote for an alternative?

(I know strategic voting complicates this somewhat, though.)

In our times, it's really hard to even be a candidate without serious financial support, however, no matter how well you're financed, there are still things that are considered political suicide and no, lying isn't one of them. People usually tolerate lying in politics, they also tolerate lying among their friends or family. You can even say, when it comes to politicians, people expect some amount of lying and consider it a regular habit of the profession, just like they have a tendency to tolerate drug using artists or religion rejecting scientists more, compared to other individuals.

They eventually whine about "lying politicians" but that's mostly done in a manner of blowing some steam off and ranting, rather than serious criticism.

The criticism is very serious, the only backward is that we don't have anymore the tools to aggressively express the criticism, flabbily whispering is never heard. Or the freedom to do so, call it as you want. The censorship is at highest.

The other side, the politically correct side, is however allowed and even encouraged to use any attitude, including violence, intimidation and insults. It suffice to look at anti-Trump rallies. Just an example.

You talk as if there is only one side constantly lying and getting away with it because their arguments are considered politically correct and an opposition who are boy-scouts but constantly oppressed because they carry the torch of disturbing facts.

This is not the case and if we'll go into specifics, Trump is not more honest than Clinton.

Well yes, if you want to go in detail, I consider the claim of Islam massive immigration being peaceful, natural and welcomed as a major lie, with much more dramatic consequences than the usual political lies.

Politicians respond to those who finance them and then talk trash so the mathematical majority (according to the electoral system in a given country) can put them in a position where they can return the "favours". The voters as a mass could be as bad as short-sighted, primitive and unsophisticated crowd but even if you had a population of Einsteins, they still wouldn't be able to pick the "right" candidate when they are offered only "wrong" ones.
