oops
i forgot to mention the map editor which i thought was a bit poor.
the graphics are great it just the layout is in a isometric view which can be a nusaince.
there is no option to zoom in and out to see the map in a smaller screen.
So i will give the editor a 7
so my final mark will probably end up as a
9 overall mark

not bad, but needs patch
This almost isn't a heroes series game. So many changes... Not all bad thankfully. In fact I enjoy it a little bit more than H3 because their hardly occurs a battle in which you can just blast through without worrying about anything till very late in the game. At least on advanced I am encountering rather good resistance from AI after week 6 or so and it's hard to beat any map earlier than 2 months with the no chaining.
The problems for me are almost all battle related- the new spell system is a huge improvement- but magic heroes are really weak in the start of the game. I always try and give potion of immortality before big battles since if hero dies in battle he doesn't get any experience- and it's very essential for your magic hero to gain experience early as possible. Might hero can do it later on since they are their own army, but spells prolong life of your units dramatically and without a decent spell caster, holding onto more than a couple towns on larger maps with AI or in multi human armies coming after you...
The might heroes who are ranged very nice early on, but I find myself using heroes to absorb damage in the early battles- 100 HP absorbtion save alot of units, especially since you can resurrect hero for free in your own town. 2 might hero shields for your ranged enourmous benefit.
OK, finally to the bad things... there are so many dif terrains in the battle maps that right now it's impossible to plan good strategy because you can't tell how far it is for your creatures till you can hold the mouse over and see how many turns it takes to reach, but by then if you aren't 1 turn away... you are screwed. So really hard to plan. Also- quicksand combined with ranged or one strong grunt can hold a corner of the map vs very strong forces. Especially with a might hero shield(might hero with GM combat and potions plus few levels takes forever to die- especially potion of immortality needs more restrictions) added in and a magic hero casting buffs. The only choices are getting the best ranged units or the best offensive spells. Takes alot of the fun of the battles away.
I'd like easier way of transfering items and armies too- like just double click on unit you want to split and new item automatically fitting onto hero if no item is that slot previously.
Also- lack of multi and very few maps coming with game... I give it 7 out of 10 right now. More maps, patch for some battle things, and add multi; 9 out of 10.

Points taken out for atrocious graphics, lack of multiplayer and some annoying bugs.

i think the graphics are a much improvement from heroes 3. Even some of the animation is good if not amusing, except for the satys.
At least the game is geeting good reviews from other places on the web.

my opinions ... 10 = best all time EVER, 1 = sell the game!, 5 = good, worth the money.
MUSIC - 7
Great Music, but the tracks keep skipping!
GRAPHICS - 8
Best 2D graphics I've seen. 
ANIMATION - 8
Very good.
GAMEPLAY - 9
Great just like all the other HoMM's
BATTLESCREEN - 7
I'd give it a 9 if only it had a grid so I could see where I can or can't move.
INTERFACE - 6
SPELLS - 9
much more realistic with certain heroes NOT learning every spell in the world.
MAP EDITOR - 8
would give it a 9 if it had a cut / paste. The artistic possibilities are HUGE! But this has one disadvantage, that it takes FOREVER to make a good map.
OVERALL - 8.5
Definitely worth the money Easily in my top 5 favorites.

Well, since the thread has been taken to the top anyway...
I'd rate it 8, maybe 8.5. In fact, I found many of the improvements really good. The gameplay is probably better than in homm3. The music is good, but I just can't listen to it for a long time - imho it's really boring, the same motives through all the themes. But ok for separate listening. Graphics are good (actually, great), but I miss the hand-drown pictures from 1-3 parts which created such a nice atmosphere... Poor interface, poor town design (Preserve on volcanic terrain is what I call extreme  ), sometimes strange animation...
Overall: I have all the three CDs and I'm not sorry for the money that I've spent on them

i would give it a 8, i like it more then H3, but in the campaings heroes get to strong, you should still have to buy units. maybe if they removed the potions of immortality the game would be alot beter.

An 8.5
I didn't think much when I bought it last year and didn't get far with it.
Now out of boredom I start up again and find it very engaging. It's long enough since HOMM 3 that I'm not thinking of the differences. Just playing and having fun. I'm on my second campaign (The pirate one) and it's a blast.

I would give this game:
MUSIC: 7
I didn't like the music here. h2 and h3 music was better.
ANIMATION: 9
There was some things I didn't like but it was really good.
TOWN SCREEN: 8
Graphics in the town screen are good but too small. I cannot really see any difference whether there's a flower or humans in Statuary Garden(Medusas, Chaos)
GRAPHICS: 8
Good, but too good. A bit childish.
TERRAIN: 6
h3 terrain was better, water moved. In h3:wog trees moved from the wind. h4 terrain isn't so well.
HEROES AND CREATURES: 8
creatures looked good, but heroes' faces were DISGUSTING!!!
h4 forerunner had better faces in it.
MISCELLANEOUS: 9
Other things I didn't mention was quite good. I think, you understand what i'm talking about.
OVERALL: 8
I like this game, but it is not the best.
P.S. Isn't it the game because wherefore 3DO bankrupted???

I never listen to the music now, I usually turn it all the way off.
homm4 is a much funner game then homm3 though.
i give it a 10

when i first saw it, i would have given it a 1, second time i played it (thought maybe it'd be better if it'd been longer since i played 3) not much more impressed. but i finally just sat down and got used to the game play,and now i'd give the gameplay atleast a 7.5 maybe and 8. the main thing i MUST have is a random amp generator. if that hapened, and it worked right, i'd give it a 9. that was the only thing i ever really played in 3, and that game was one of my favorites of all time.

It has some good things, but most of all, are bad... I hope they will be changed in H5...

When I compare H IV cu H3 (witch was a perfect 10), i cannot give it more de 7,5, or max. 8.

Very good, but not so good as in H3 unfortunately.
ANIMATION: 8
Usually good, but if you speed the game up it's not as crisp anymore....
TOWN SCREEN: 8
Not as good as in H3, screen is looking good... but lacks options.
GRAPHICS: 9
Good. But reminds me more of a cartoon than H3 did.
TERRAIN: 10
Terrific. Lush and colorful. The way it should be.
HEROES AND CREATURES: 8
Creatures are good. Heroes should each look unique on battlefield.
GAMEPLAY: 9
Very long-lasting and addictive.... SMASHER!
OVERALL: 9
Near perfection, but not as good as H3 which would have got 10 from me....

LOL , here is a true ratings:
STORYLINE 8 (very complicated, you dont see changes of storyline in game, instead of this Heroze4 Campaign gives you map to play, with a book to read before it, lol, sick sh|t, who can read those boring storylines?)
GAMEPLAY 4 (Total mess, NWC tryed to make some balance with towns, units and so.. but gampeplay basicaly suck. The only good thing is skill tree, everything else is sick)
GRAPHICS 6 (Better then average , Very much objects, every terrain has own object versions, and so on.. but it makes game very graphicaly complicated, sometimes is difficult to
see enemy heroe hidden behind some kind of coloured tree or bush and so on. Desingners made total broke with units: They look like kiddish. Some units walk/run/fight animation look sooo Dumb, they act like hard phucked gays.
SOUND AND MUSIC 7 (nothing much to say here, heroze3 music was much much better. AI theme, then you press Next turn become so unbelievably booring.. Overall music is total gayness. Sound value is much better, but some of them sucks too. IMO heroze3 music is much more solid, and sounds much better)
Why to try heroze IV?
Reasons :
1. Then you play heroze IV for a time, even oldest Wolfenstein3D game will become very fun and interesting for you. Cuz there are no more boring game like H4
2. This is an example how games should not look like. Heroze IV bancrupted all NWC team! They are in financial hole! SO play it, and think about poor programers and designers, who spended and wasted time for this trash
3.Play it, and if you got interested in this game, that means you got old , over >80 years grandpa , who piss in bed, and like little cute games like heroze IV.

Cut the rude language in my forum, or you'll have an angry mod upon you. If you would look in the ToH forum you would see, that Heroes 4 is not dead. In fact it is more alive, then Heroes 3, so your commetns are just your own personal opinion. But I'll warn you last time, no rudness in my forum.

i like the graphics there good but it sometimes crashes or gets a bit stuck.
also when uve been playing on it about an hour it begins to like show the stages of animation hmmmm....
(e.g)if u were in a battle and u had a flying creature its wings would flap like ded slow so like it doesnt like run smothly it like goes in like stages
if u get wat i mean!!??
