Is a future Circular Economy a Must-have?

If washing your bum with a rag, saved lots of trees would you do it? Would you eat a recycled-food sauce? Would you wear used clothes if they were in good condition? No need to answer.

The Brits (W. Europe too)are usually ahead of the U.S. in  addressing bothersome issues and here’s another example. Even though it seems it was an American that started this, our baby steps towards a sound recycling system is mediocre at best.

I was heavily involved in recycling and we were making steps but since then most places have stopped and started again or are not making an effort at all. I worked with lead for 22 years so the phrase “Cradle to the Grave” was a part of my life. Thankfully people are starting to see that Cradle to Cradle is far better and more importantly it is becoming more and more mandatory for the future of man on this Earth.

If you don’t know a thing about this topic, you should. Here are some links.

The first link is a report from the British Parliament that I linked through a BBC World story.
link1

The next is the company that was/is behind the British efforts. I linked a diagram but lost to read there.
link2

The last link is the first company that got rolling on this issue.
link3

The sites provide a lot of info and also some handy tools for activist support.

I hate to say it but for these grand ideas to work, everything will need to retain value. I.e. As a boy I picked up glass bottles out of fields and creeks because they were worth something. Today if I’m in a park I pick up trash for nothing but lots of years passed between my awareness/attitudes.

I don't think it is a question of if but when, unless we stop reproducing excessively, which seems quite unlikely. I would do the things you mention, except maybe eat recycled food sauce. How does that exactly work anyway, is it similar to filtering out your own urine into water or something?

I wouldn't mind most anything but I'm not sure about the sauce stuff, I forget what they actually called it. How they would do it is beyond me and I wonder if it wouldn't be just as good to make all food scraps into fertilizer since the soil is getting worse in many places and the chemical stuff is so problematic with health issues.

Back to the recycled food, I know anything is needed, unfortunately, there are many places where any sort of nourishment would be welcomed.

For me,  it's the when that's the troublesome bit. i.e. There is a strong attitude that America has been a monster living in the lap of luxury and the idea of a growing middle class (say China) not being able to do the same is nearby unthinkable. You know what I mean, "you got away with murder now I want to" kind of thinking.

Then there's also the factor of the time needed, as well as serious resistance from established business. I'll look for the breakdown that we're supposedly facing and post it.

One comment on the Brit report; I thought it pretty awesome that the folks went from 1 in 10 homes recycling (in 2000) to now it's almost 1 of 2. However it's not all good news; even if they hit a hundred pct. the bulk, by far, is in the business sector and that's still in it's infancy.

Btw, believe it or not, there are companies here that mandatorily "throw away food daily" and make no effort to give to shelters, etc.

What seems weirder to me is, how in the movies Americans throw their phones at the wall if they get angry at the person they speak to or how they throw the TV out the window after they hear some bad news etc etc. Thousands of dollars of equipment wasted just to decharge. Do you guys actually do that kind of stuff or do they put it in the movies constantly because it is such an easy way of capturing frustration visually?

No, it does happen, so it's not all out of the blue. I knew a young man that got mad and smacked his car's fender with a wrench. He made a nice dent that cost a grand to fix.

I don't have to tell you that decades of prosperity for a nation often breeds weak people that possess strong immaturities.
