It's only been a couple of days...

Give it a chance. It has slowly won me over over just a few maps. Yes, there are some problems (or at least some "less than ideal" implementation, but nothing that should cause the kind of serious backlash I'm readin so far.

I keep hearing it looks "ugly". Ugly how? Can you who share this opinion try to be more specific?

I have just a 500MHz PIII, but loaded with 512 RAM and the brand new, kick ass Quadro4 video card and it looks amazing. If you're complaining about the design decisions (like the graphic looking interface or the "My Little Pony" Unicorns) then I can accept that. There are some design decisions that I think seriously dropped the ball, but the way in which they are rendered on screen is great. Maybe those who say it's ugly need to update some drivers

The changes to the heroes will really keep you playing HOMM 4 rather than going back. It's opens the doors to so many more strategies. I think that's the primary reason people are snowing so much...you can't jump in and use the same tactics, so you have to "re-learn" things. Quit crying and get up to speed. It's a NEW GAME. It's not an add-on.

The things I'm enjoyiung the most so far are:
the simultaneous damage
line of sight for ranged units
the new magic system
caravans...although you should be able to set up schedules so that it's less management (ie. every X days or when creatures reach X units)
and of course the heroes.

The flaws to this point are:
the lack of a random map generator. There better be one in the works or I think many will go back to HOMM3.
Lack of MP, but that apears to be done soon. (games should actually be FINISHED when they ship with all the features that are promised).
lack of a grid option in combat and unclear obstacles.
no experience message after combat. Completely unexcusable.
some lame design decisions. I used to love the Rampart town, so I immediately gave the Preserve a chance...but I'll be damned if I'm gonna use "My Little Ponies".
Elementals are hands down the stupidest looking things I have ever seen in ANY of the HOMM games. Whoever ok'd those designs needs to be slapped repeatedly.
It might be too soon, but the difference between the levels of units seems almost TOO great. It's very difficult to go toe-to-toe with any stack of creatures that is a level superior to your stack. The gap seems huge thus far.

So yes, there are some faults. But it looks like some will be addressed soon. Hopefully they'll read some of this feedback as they claim to have listened to ideas during development (Manual Page 10)

But don't let a few opinions sway you. If you were planning on continuing the HOMM experience, do it. Buy it. It's a great NEW game. It has a learning curve, sure, but it offers a different style of game than we've seen in HOMM before.

I agree almost 100%.  I don't care about elemental pics (okay, they're dorky but oh well) or the "my little ponies", but hey, not like you're demanding a refund because of that anyway

as for level difference, I think it's okay.  My weekly production of level X is likely to lose to level X+1, but it's not a total slaughter.  Now if you take ten guys at level X and go against 10 of level X+1, that may be a slaughter... but you have to look at weekly totals.  I think that's where a lot of the balance is, and that's why black dragons only grow at 1 per week whereas behemoths grow at 3 per week (once you get that breeding pit upgrade), etc.

But all in all I'm growing to like it a lot.  I think by the time a random map generator comes out (better not be another "buy the expansion to get the random map generator" snow - I WILL pirate that if they do that to us), it'll be far superior to 3, at least for me.

Seriously, the more I play it...the more I like the changes. Anyone complaining about it just needs to give it a fair chance and play it for awhile. You'll change your mind.

Now that I've tried all of the towns, I truly think they've done a GREAT job of balancing things. Each town has it's very unique strength. It's just going to take a while to master how to use each town...but that's part of the fun.

3DO, a quick patch to include experience points earned after a battle? Please? If you include a random map generator, you'll have fans for life

so far, I give it a solid 9 out of 10 (if they would have made some of the units a bit less "happy", I'd bump it to a 9.5). With a Random Map Generator, it may reach a 10 yet.

I like it a lot more too... it's only getting better and better the more I get used to it...

but as for the elementals.  Well, fire still suck, but I kinda like earth.  Mainly for the way they die.  Kinda makes me feel like I'm bowling

I couldn't wait for HOMM4. Got it now, sat down at the computer yesterday and installed it.
At first it sent a chilling sensation down my spine. I thought, don't tell me that the people who said that it sucked were right and it actually sucked.
Then I played, didn't like it. Characters were too small, animations were slow and so-so. Had to go to work, played again when I came back from work.
That time was more OK, I was expecting that. So I actually stopped looking at what was so unfamiliar and started analyzing the gameplay.
Woke up this morning and wanted to continue my game now, which is usually a good sign. Played for a a few hours and they finally got me. I'm hooked.
This game is great and, strategically speaking, I think it will me more complex and challenging than HOMM3.
Things I dig: Creatures Dwellings, Daily creature generation, caravans, "active" heroes, new spells.
 Things I miss:
1)Shadowing in movement for combat
2)XP showing at the end of battle
3)Heroes specialties
4)Mighty gorgons
5)The town icon when trying to go into the city menu from the adventuring screen
6)I know it may sounds childish but I find it weird when I got on/off a boat and there's not that weird woosh sound
7)The cutscenes between scenarios during the campains

But that's only coming from a guy who did not even see half the creatures in the game yet!
That's all I gotta say about that!

And I think that about sums it up.  Almost everybody has to go through the same three phases...

1: "Awww, sh*t, this really does suck!  Damn, wish I hadn't bought it."

2: "Well, I may as well play it now that I have it.  At least some of these ideas are good."

3: "Ooh, that's kind of cool... oh wow, that's neat.  Hey, this is a pretty good game!"

In my case it took almost a week to hit phase 3, but I've hit it.  In fact, I'd say it's not just pretty good, I'd say it's great!  I expect a lot more positive responses once a patch is out, as well... can't wait

I'm deep into Phase 3 and getting near Phase 4...admitting it's a better game than HOMM3 (assuming some of those issues will be patched).

Preserve rocks...
Necroplis rocks, but in a different way...
played the others, but not as much...gonna take a better look at them.

so if thats phase 4 i must be on 5 finding it pretty slow and repetitive, i mean theres lots of great changes and in many ways it is better, but i feel its been slowed down to much theres never anything exciting happening in the first few weeks or is it just me?

I don't know... in 3 I always felt like it was slow early on, too.  But every game has a phase 5, I just hope heroes 4 takes a while to get there for me.  Even 3 only kept me really entertained for a few months, then it was more of an on-and-off thing.

I do find HOMM4 to be a bit slower paced, but not that much more than HOMM3. I think being able to focus purely on your Heroes and not having to deal with hitting the different mills, gardens, etc. every week is great. It might make it feel like there is less to do in a day, but it's a good tradeoff. And with the inclusion of the simultaneous damage, you have a much harder time getting a huge army together which also slows things down a little because you have to get reinforcements.
I do think it takes much longer to get your hero to a comparable level to your heroes in HOMM3. So maybe that is part of the slower feel.
I think the random map generator is what keeps the game alive after you've tried some campaigns and scenarios. Plus, for those who love multiplayer, having to wait sucks. Sometimes the single player scenarios aren't as intriguing for some.

I agree, i wasn't even going to buy HOMM4 based on some negative feedback on the net, but i borrowed my friend's copy. After a long evening, i definitely wanted it.

I think the graphic style is a big adjustment for a lot of people. The old HOMMs felt like a boardgame on your computer, and people like that look. The game tries to make everything a little bit more realistic now, down to rendered sprites of 3D models with an isometric battlefield view.

But as a pure strategy game, it's great. A lot of thought and detail went into this game which aren't apparent immediately. I personally love:
- the MTG relationship between the magic schools, life is aligned with nature/order, order is aligned with life/death, death is aligned with order/chaos, etc..
- how every unit has some purpose, even the lowly peasants
- advanced/hybrid class system
