True. The big picture is explained in this post. The cycle is nearly complete now, that is the solution is there.

Back to programming after the algorithms needed for the AI are specified fully. This task is much more predictable, so I could post milestones on a website. But in the end, three months or so is not that much time compared to twelve years, so I may forgo posting about it. It's much more beautiful if it hits out of the blue, when no one truly believes in it anymore, isn't it?

no problem thanks for the response, I only ask as a compliment really because I have been very eager to play against a high quality AI for as long as it was mentioned and still believe in that, but yeah makes good sense to have it a surprise cheers lol

and how many of ubi's m&m releases were pirated? got an estimate on that?

The average for PC games is 8 out of 10 players are using a pirated copy. DRM reduces that number a bit. It certainly was the case, and actually even a bit worse, for Might & Magic X (thanks to the early access tracking, which allowed us to see how many people were playing the game and compare this number to how many sales we had.)

fred79 said:
also, citations for all this?

"As a series, Heroes has sold over 750,000 copies world wide." Greg Fulton, source: http://www.heroesofmightandmagic.com/forgetown/index.php?cat=interview

"The series has sold 1.5 million units worldwide" (the trick is they're actually talking about Might & Magic as a whole here, not just Heroes.) 3DO Press release: https://web.archive.org/web/20010425145533/http://www.corporate-ir.net/ireye/ir_site.zhtml?ticker=thdo&script=410&layout=9&item_id=66067

"Heroes of Might and Magic V was a commercial success. Its sales surpassed 350,000 copies by the end of June 2006": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heroes_of_Might_and_Magic_V#Reception
(The actual press release from Ubi doesn't seem accessible anymore, hence why I resort to link the Wikipedia page instead. Note that these are the numbers after only one month.

Heroes VI physical sales (keeping in mind VGChartz was doing estimates based on incomplete sources): http://www.vgchartz.com/game/49554/might-amp-magic-heroes-vi/
Double that number to account for the digital sales, and you get 600+K copies.

Of course it would be nice to also see you guys provide citations as well, considering I read a lot of "I believe...", "I assume...", "that sounds unlikely..." and a lot of that appears to be wishful thinking (or anti-Ubi bias) rather than anything backed by fact

Hello, Marzhin.

I beg you pardon, but you didn't take into account retroactive selling. Heroes III sold 500k copies 20 years ago, but it's not like the world ended there. Let's say the bulk of sales for SoD/Complete Edition were from 20 years ago, I can agree with that, but you leave out a very important player here. Of course, I'm talking about (the not so complete) H3 HD remake:

According to steamspy. H3 hd sold somewhere between 500k and 1 million copies and let me say that's not shabby for a 20 year old game. Of course steamspy may not be that accurate. Please refer to the below articles for deciding if steamspy is reliable or not:
https://www.pcgamesn.com/steam/steam-spy-accuracy-developers
https://kotaku.com/steam-spy-is-back-but-not-as-accurate-as-before-1825608646
https://www.forbes.com/sites/mattperez/2018/04/12/was-steamspys-imperfect-data-better-than-no-data/#5b97d79c157b

But even so, even if we take the lower bound (500k), apply a fairly large negative error margin of 10%, the number would still be something around 450k. That's not even taking into account Uplay! So let's say around ~1 million copies sold for both old and the new h3. Maybe steamspy is bogus, maybe it's not, but you cannot say h3 hd didn't sold at least a few hundred thousand copies. Back in the day, Galaad told on the forums that Erwin personally confirmed at the h7 fan meeting that H3 HD was a success in Ubi's eyes.

Heroes VI, sits in the same bracket on steamspy. So we can call H6 a moderate success for a B tier TBS game. But it's still debatable if H6 can be called more successful than H3, even disregarding the different periods the games were made in (let's not forget that the market has grown exponentially between 1999 and 2011). Also I'm pretty sure in terms of production H3 HD has far succeeded its production costs. Sure maybe H6 was turning a profit (no data to know), but I'm willing to bet h3 hd sold more copies per cent spent than H6. We can include here the much more aggressive advertising H6 got compared to h3 hd, which was mostly on the back of its (much much better) older version.

Well a bit late to the party but I just saw today the announcement of Marzhin leaving Ubi at Celestial Heavens.

I'd like to wish him all the best in his following projects, and thank him for his effort to make something good out of the M&M franchise under Ubisoft. Especial thanks for making M&MX possible, a game that I enjoyed very much.

About the comments of H7 and the franchise in general it just reassures me in my idea that it is dead in the hands of Ubisoft, who will just milk it in China and we possibly never see a proper HOMM or M&M game ever again.

To be honest I think Ubi was never a good fit for M&M. It is just to big for a niche franchise and it looks to me like the overhead in that company can kill any small/medium project. So much marketing and different levels of management interfering with development... It doesn't help either that people in the creative team didn't have a clear vision of what they or fans wanted. At least not the correct vision.

Heroes would need a small/mid studio, agile, talented and experienced and with a clear vision of what they want to do. Ubi doesn't have that, as Marzhin says it is mostly big teams for blockbusters, which is what they really want to do. And we all know how it went by subcontracting external studios, a different one for each project, having to build from scratch, not even having a good foundation from the previous projects. Crazy.

Actually I wonder why Ubi wanted the license in the first place. What did they imagine they would do with it? I actually remember at the beginning how some people of the creative team at Ubisoft had some really crazy ideas of taking the license to a new level... making movies of it was talked. Maybe that was the original idea of Ubisoft? To use the license as a blockbuster material but then they realized it was to niche to occupy that slot?

We'll never know I guess. I think our only hope now is to wait for some spiritual successor. Perhaps some crowdfunding project or something similar, though nobody seemed to show much interest even in the wildest times of Kickstarter. I'll have a look at Song of Conquest, hopefully it holds enough HOMM in it and it is a good game.

What Might and Magic needs is a studio that loves new and old games and is not afraid of creating DLCs/expansions even for 10y old games!

I got one candidate of mine
____________
World of Heroes (Czech fansite)
The Shadows Over Ashan (H7 community DLC)

I don't see how that is relevant, if Ubi wants to make him an offer they're 100% free to do so.

Case was never open, Ubi uses the IP for Chinese mobile market profit right now.

Yea, they tried that already and he said no. The onus is definitely not on them, rather on JVC. All he has to do is slap Ubisoft with his "original creator" resume and he'd be hired on the spot. Heck, they even have a position open for whoever wants to apply, if that's still on.

But he doesn't care. He's detached himself ever since Heroes 4. And M&M is probably too deep in the mud to be worth the effort. Yet you insist that JVC, JVC... We've had this conversation before, it ain't happening. And it shouldn't. JVC is right in the place where he chose to be and nothing can change that.

Since he has already published the next HoMM for IOS and Android, if anything he'd be the right man for the job in China.

The only company that will do the job and find the right developer may be Paradox. Sure, we'd get a game with as many DLCs as creatures, costing half a grand, but a game we'd get eventually.

JVC is finished with HoMM, as he's finished with C&C.

Maybe he's finished with it or maybe not, you aren't more in his head than I am. Nevertheless, it doesn't change that in an ideal world I'd rather have him do it. I have a feeling that even if he showed interest you'd privilege Paradox, which is your opinion but I cannot agree with it.

As a discussion, this is on the same level as the question whether a unicorn would look better in strawberry or in vanilla color.

At this stage, anyone interested in actually buying the franchise would have to had a fabulous game idea and the conviction that this in connection with the brand name would turn over a profit, and that's something I just don't see happening.
