I have to say that I find this is a little bit unfair, because it's just one side of the coin. There is a 2nd, and the question is what to do.

A) HoMM 5 way:
+ people can play through opponent(s)'s combats.
- SimTurns stop once and for all once human opponents are "near" each other.
Verdict: Is great on large maps with short combats versus neutrals

B) Other way:
- people have to stop while anyone human opponent is battling (MANUALLY).
+ Game is always on SimTurns; stopping is necessary to avoid human player(s) being attacked by other human player(s) while in battle.
Verdict: needs a good autocombat system to work; SimTurns create rts-like problems when competing for something while near each other.


In this case of course the problem is that autocombat is rather unsatisfactory, the AI being braindead - also there isn't THAT much human interaction in the game (not many pvp battles), so HoMM 5 way would have been better for the occasion, I guess.

even if autocombat gives same losses as I manually play...where is the fun? we lose one element of the game - it becomes more like anno now lol.

 H5 system of sim-turns is perfect to me and all multiplayer gamers.
 Well, the best system would be what sid meyers implemented loooong time ago along with civilization series!

And why not the game itself restarting sim turns?

I've been preaching for long about a sim turns system that could both improve the pace of the game but avoiding an almost real time system game like a sim turn is in the extreme

It is just a matter of the game detecting at the start of the turn if possible conflicts are possible (heroes can meet or objects property or potentially porperty of a hero can be visited by an enemy). If not, then everything is simultaneous, otherwise it is turn based. From here you can complicate the system as much as you want, making the conflict definition more subtle or even allowing turns partly turn based and partly sim based. But at least the basic shouldn't be that hard to achieve.

However, taking into consideration the capabilities of the team behind the game... sorry I mean, the limitations of the engine, this seams like really rocket science.

Sim turns looks in this game like many other stuff just like an afterthough. Another check to tick so that marketing can use it and the supplier can fulfill the requirements matrix.

indeed so lets focus on more constructive stuff and what do we do now with what we got (ubi and a rookie dev team.)
before we get to the balancing we must be done with bugs.
necropolis heroes are mixed up, skill and abilities not working (pathfinding), crashes because the game cannot handle lots of multipliers for buildings and other stuff.
then about balancing, my thoughts on regeneration would be like someone else suggested to be a higher tier spell, since it does nothing for those cores, and get a good damaging earth spell in first tier like poison spray.
regeneration does not need to resurrect. also heal indeed could be a higher tier spell and retribution (nerfed) as a first tier one.
and for god's sake change the grand master of fire magic, for smth more useful!!!!

Trouble is not in UE3, Example is the AI logic, it does not have any relation with engine.

lol every time i wander back in here i find the game in an even worse state. More flaws are being revealed all the time. And now this simultaneous turns thing... i think its pretty amazing... how did they even manage to mess it up so badly. They didnt even know what they were trying to achieve

This game is a total mess from the core to the surface
