Now on a serious note. I know we can't expect Blizzard/Valve level of attention to detail fom Ubi but is it really too late to revamp the system to not have flanking or a 7 school spell system? The flankig is simply unnecessary and the spell system really grinds on my nerves. The spellsystem needs no revamping. It could literally be copied from any game since H3 and noone would complain, yet they implement a system harder to balance than any previous version... All the time spent on trying to fix the spellsystem could be used to finetune the initiative system and adding more map objects to make the map more colorful. Both of these are things the community actually wants to see and not some random feature you saw somewhere else and feel obliged to implement to meet the Ubisoft innovation quota for the year.

All I'm saying is that bigger, more successful franchises have had features removed from them during development when fans turned out to not like them. No need for unnecessary innovation.

I wasn't aware of that particular one but it certainly sounded like a provocation. If you edit it out I will happily reverse the penalty.

Although being fan of the Age of Wonders series, I agree with JeremiahEmo to certain point. After playing AoW1 for several years, I could not get used to the Wizard system in AoW2. Certainly, it had many strong sides (especially with the Shadow Magic expansion), but it is my least favourite from the series.

Age of Wonders 3, on the other hand, is an awesome game. And still getting better. Heroes has a lot to learn. I still hope there will be some sort of diplomacy in Heroes one day.

Oh man this got off track. AOW3 was only supposed to be an example. So let's get back onto the flanking system that they're implementing in H7. You get a full flanking bonus if you hit a creature from behind and only a half flanking bonus if you hit a creature from the side. This was seen in the twitch video. So the point I want to get across is that if you can't choose the direction your creature faces after an ordinary move, you could be exposing it's flank to the enemy.

You could also have the direction your creature faces planned on the enemies creatures initiative, but only if we get to choose. If we don't, it makes it a lot harder to move around the battlefield.

Of course it was just an example, but it is a good example. In my opinion, flanking system in AoW3 is done right, it is great system and it improves AoW by quite a bit. What is also important is that defending creatures can't be flanked(something that isn't implemented in Heroes online, and everything can be flanked...), but I guess we can't really look at AoW when talking about Heroes because whole combat system is a lot different and better done in AoW to begin with.

If we want flanking system like in AoW or something close to that, the whole combat system needs to be redesigned to work and we don't want that as we wouldn't have Heroes anymore but some other game.

They are different systems, but I agree AOW3 got it right. I don't see any reason why H7 can't have something similar, and especially the point you made about defending units being unable to be flanked. 2 things Devs should seriously consider

There is a rule against offending other members, it's quite clear in the Code of Conduct. Posting an offense is not allowed, and just because the offense is a quote from a song lyric does not mean it's allowed. There have been cases where members have been allowed to humoruously link to movie or song clips that contains language that would otherwise have been considered against this rule, but the post in question did not fall under this category imo., certainly not when it's posted with no quotation or no reference to the source of the quote. The message as it was written was very clear and could only be interpreted in one way, and that was strictly against the rules of this forum.

I tend to agree with this. As I said playing Heroes Online with this system really changed a lot if not completely the way of moving your units, and I'm not sure it is for the best. I'm not against changes, I already said I liked some from H4 and H5, but they need to "fit" or be subtle enough, imo.

My God, why the AoW comparisons, that game is far more Civilization than Heroes and the battle system is horrible, which was also the main issue in Disciples amongst a lot others. The closest thing we ever got to a Heroes clone was Lords of Magic and even that had a screwed up battle system. There might be some details other games do better than Heroes but as the whole package, no game comes close...

Disciples 1-2 had preety fun battle system and been very good game.

Disciples 3 on other hand was trying to hard to be HoMM and failed.

Why the AoW comparisons you ask? Well, let me explain you this in a good manner, same as you don't like Disciples and AoW or think that Heroes is far better, whatever, my opinion is that AoW sh*ts all over Heroes. And I didn't even play Civilization because it isn't a game placed in fantasy settings.

I love all three games, but there are so much things that AoW has that in my book are a lot better than in Heroes games, and no, those aren't just details.

In the essence, yes, they are different games, but combat system is still fairly similar as both games are turn-based-strategies where you have army from both sides moving and attacking in turns while your heroes cast spells. I am not sure what is so "horrible" in AoW combat.

A discussion about homm and aow is most interesting but it would be better if it was moved to a topic of its own

PS I too find that AoW is better than heroes in some ways but that doesn't make the opposite also true.

Not exactly.
To be honest, both "failed" Heroes games(Heroes 4 and Heroes 6) tried something completely different from other Heroes games and tried to change the basics of Heroes franchise and in my opinion, that is why they've failed.
