NWC didn't go down because of HoMM IV. The game actually sold quite well, even if it wasn't as popular as HoMM III. Hadn't it been rushed and released in a largely unfinished state thanks to 3DO, it could have been even better.

No, NWC died because of Trip Hawkins' stupid decisions and priorities. You can read more here. JVC should never have sold his company to 3DO.

Ubi bought the game because HoMM III is the chess of turn-based fantasy strategy games and they knew they could milk money out of it for a long time to come. They are no Messiahs. Myself, my negativism towards plagiarizing WC/WoW aside, I'd even argue that the franchise would have been better off sold to Blizzard. Those guys started off like nerds in a cellar just like NWC and know what being creative means, unlike Ubisoft which is run by business people who know a lot about making money but nothing about art.

Even though Oliver Ledroit's design obviously do differ from Blizzard's a little, you can't deny that the concept was plagiarized from WC/WoW. Ubi-wan couldn't resist the temptation to once again smash a traditional theme-based HoMM town and replace its content with a race imported from generic fantasy series.

If you really want to play the Copy-cat train who copied from who, I would like you to take a look at the nagas from The legend of the five rings  :-)

@Avirosb
Both in WC and MaM games nagas have different colors of their skin. ;-)

NWC actually hired masters like Larry Elmore and Boris Vallejo to define the art style of their games, instead of just cloning the latest trends of younger franchises lol

So they hired the trend-setters to make their game look like the popular things from 1980s in order to sell them to people who gruw up on them? Well isn't that original :-P. But I'm just joking i love their art

You are again proving my point. Why does it have to be black or white?????? I never said ubi is a messiah, nor i'm an ubi fanboy/spin doctor. No! I'm just acknowledging that it's not all so bad as you guys keep saying, but not all so good either. I'm still deeply pained by that rigid skillwheel and those abominable heroes' specializations. And the fact that you had to pay to find bugs for them is so infuriating that i literally want to bang my head on the walls!!! They are te worst on that part. Yet they are the only ones who bought the franchise... Even of the reason is money. Today's everything.
Too bad WoW was such a hit and most things are inspired by it,and too bad that it still sells.
But come on,nitpicking such trivial stuff about portraits or make up, or I dunno why,is getting ridiculous(no I 'm not saying you 're ridiculous)!!!!
And while you or anyone criticizes the blade dancer's smile,or shoes,or eyelids or smth faint in the backround of anything ubisoft makes(or copies), there are a zillion glaring stuff like that in the old universe!! But the old universe gets a pass just because. Praise nwc, praise ubisoft, and condemn both when needed. Because both have pros and cons like er' thing in this life. That's just all I'm saying. A little balance, open mind and keeping it cool. Am i saying smth that paranoid?

I don't see Ubi hiring any Marvel or DC artists.
Maybe if the Wardancer looked more like the Hulk and the Skeleton like the Ironman H7 would sell more copies.
I still think that the problem is that the series lost it's connection to the fairytale-like graphics. H5 kindof still went that way despite the obvious WH inspiration but H6 just dropped the ball and went Erwan-style.

So what? Cover art of M&M was beautiful.
That same art would be shred to pieces by you and your friend if it was published by UBI now. I just cant quietly read page after page of total nonsense how bladedancer has strange smile or druid has white dress and how that is unacceptable by standards of few constant naysayers.
I know that devs have enough experience so they can ignore such unimportant posts but I have difficulties to navigate through sea of nonsense and troll post to find anything useful here anymore.

The males looking more like monsters than the females + blueish tint + buff bod.

GenyaArikado said:
Yeah. People also forget that the mythological male naga looked like a snowing hydra.
Gosh, nagas. What a hydra ripoff

Damn, you really cant even understand a picture if its too big, do you? That sexual disphormism comes from mythology itself, not WC. The mythological male naga looks like an hydra (like the image elvin posted below, the statues of Sar-Elam are inspired by Budha statues which decipt him protected by the Naga King). Since most of fantasy games already have hydras generally the male naga is kept serpent like but with only one head and the female one is kept looking more human. The bluish tint is because we generally associate blue to the ocean lol

And even then Ashan has 3 types of nagas lol

Elvin said:
Comparing the classic H3 naga queen and the H6 kensei I am more in favour of the former. It was cold, intimidating and had an awesome butchering sound as all 6 swords tore their enemies apart. That said I was very satisfied with the gameplay reinvention of the naga as a unit that takes the heat to save its comrandes and gets progressively more damaging when attacking the same opponent. The challenge concept was cool.

I always loved Naga queens. I hppe for a female kensei if they bring back Sanctuary

the out of left field transformation of them into a main race and association with water are other factors too I think, like the Erwin Necropolis just very blatantly "inspired" by Warcraft overall lol

they lived underwater/ground in myths lol

Yeah deers can be pretty fierce when the safety of their fawns is in question :/ Normally they are nice and calm forest dwellers like any other, but if you threaten their family they become very protective. Kinda like a moose or a bear or Liam Neeson

uh I don't really give a crap if Blizzard got away with it though, I am not speaking in favour of them, I am not a fan of their series lol

nonsense not at all, I would never shred Might and Magic to pieces for hiring a master artist from Dungeons and Dragons, honestly I would be delighted if Ubi did that because after all the vision of Might and Magic from the start was a Dungeons and Dragons clone with a twist lol

Can I catch you by a word here. You wouldn't mind a master artist fro D&D? But you dislike a Master comicbook Artist? And what is wrong with other artists? Would you dislike something like this:
Jan Patrik Krásný? (He does DnD aswell btw)
Or you are OK with the game beeing a D&D knockoff but beeing a knockoff of anything else is bad?

Isin't that a bit too personal?
