Well they look the same from the art for HOMM6 that didn't made it in. At least the golem does.

they all look great. well, the artworks at least. the gargoyle should just not be called gargoyle. the word gargoyle makes me think of gothic style. the golem in particular looks super cool.

I think most of H7 Academy is based on the H6 concept that was cut. But it really does look AWESOME. I love the screenshot of the siege against the Academy town.

What I don't get is why you find H7 academy old, considering that their artwork was never used in heroes before. There are lots of concept artworks that had been around for years before they were directly referenced in a game, for instance the green spidery legs on the lich's back. Or sylvan's concept art. You just were not aware of most. I bet most of the things you see as new have been in the background for several years already.

But they were used in Duel of Champions and Might and Magic X.

Am I the only one, who is unimpressed by the academy line up?
Like seriously, there is "NOTHING NEW" in it.
Small funny creature (Gremlin/Hobbit/Cabir, name it) - Check
Golem, Gargoyle, Titan - Check
Djinn, Human mage like thing - Check
4 armored tank - Check
And even the bird is not new since it was in CoH. The lineup is old, really old.
I'm just s unimpressed, The mage could have been out and left place for Dervishes, or any other Beast creature.
Just disappointed.

Golemns, Gargoyles, Mages, Genies Djinns and Titans are too iconic to be left out of the lineup.
Cabir has the potential to be enough different from Gremlins to like them...will see
Magic Bird has a stupid name, but with the appropiate abilities could be an excellent addition.
Each to their own tastes I guess.

Well I agree with you to at least to some extent. I wouldn't mind to have a few new creatures, the Cabir is fine, I would probably have ditched the Gargoyle (was there ever a Heroes game where this creature was actually interesting?) and I also agree with someone else who said that Golem and Giant look awfully similar in the new style - perhaps it would have been a fresh air if they had actually made the Golem the champion creature, like the super-sized animated bunk of metal that it looks like.
On the other hand, I'm super exited to have Academy back in the game, and Djinn and Rakshasa were solid and interesting creatures in H5, so I'm glad to see those return. Titan <3 It will be interesting to see what the bird will do, I do agree that the name is awful however - I would probably have prefered to see the bird in Stronghold (Thunderbird?), but then again, I'm not sure what alternative Champion Academy should have save perhaps a Sphinx?

Well, you guys must consider that they are trying to keep the Ashan art-style and the overall classical lineups which Ubi's consequently(?) building upon. The game is in the middle of H5 and H6 so I think there is not much room for some drastic changes (too small of a time frame). They could always make an Academy faction made from Mage's experiments like various hybrids, but I think they've taken the "classic" Academy style, because they don't want too many controversies. Besides that still gives some explanation (and a backdoor of sorts ) from where various factions got their "mythological" units, like Minotaurs being "sheltered" by Dungeon.
Of course, you can like or dislike the "Ashan-style", you either accept it or not...
I'm very happy with Rakshas, it's one of the best original Ubi-era unit ideas (along with Lamasus), so they should stick with it.
And I like where the Gargoyles are going, still I would like a more "beasty" face for them...

My favorite creatures in the entire HOMM francise are Rakshasa, Kappa, Yuki-Onna and Gargoyles because they are all very rare myths compared to the other ones at least (orcs, goblins, dragons and medusás are overused)
So i'm happy to see the Gargoyle back.
Never been a fan of golems, to me those are boring creatures, ESPECIALLY iron golems, rock golems are better, or sand golems, or wood.
That Cabir and that Evil-Sorceress-Bird (yes I hate the dump, simple name on that bird) are horrible.
Why not use mythological creatures there? Like Salamander and Thunderbird/Raicho/Impundulu/Tsenahale/Garuda
