No it wasn't.

Yes, it was. It was certainly better than pile of Pyramids/Ziggurats and Spider legs. It had that Necropolis feeling, a lot more than H6 or H4.

Now seriously, you can say the townscreens in H5 were awesome, but the Necro town looked like half of it was missing and the perspective was weird if you didn't look at it from the front or the fly-by camera.

To clarify debate:

A necropolis was a "city of dead" (in Greek nekros, dead, the corpse, and polis, the city). They indicate so "a vast underground or open air graveyard of monumental appearance" (definition in French Dictionary Robert), for instance the necropolis which is under Alexandria in Egypt: corpses are deposited into houses similar to the living beings ones on the ground. It also indicates a vast graveyard of a big city, as the necropolis of Père-Lachaise in Paris.

Necromants (archaic form) or necromancers, are magicians who conjure the spirits of the dead to get from them all kinds of  revelations, notably predictive ones. Greek manteia (where from the word mantique) means divination. As the famous surgeon Ambroise Paré (1510-1590) said in Monsters and prodigies: "and there are several kinds of magicians:  some conjure the devils and question the dead, they are called necromancers."

With this word we enter into the field of sorcery and all gear of the sorceresses comes with: toads, snakes, malignant animals, cats and, in popular imagery the spiders who haunt the disused and dark places. Read again the stages of sorcery in Goethe's Faust.

But look out! The spider, as said Ovide in his Metamorphoses, was "Arachné" (from which come the French word "araignée"), a spinner and a weaver who made jealous  the goddess  Athena  by winning the competition in their art and was changed into a spider by the angry goddess. If it is true that in Egypt the goddess Neith protects the craftsmen who fabricate cloths, textiles and bandages necessary for mummification, she weaves the world and its borders. But the image of the spinners of human destiny, that of the fairies also, does not come from it, but from the Parques in Greek mythology and their spindles: they are the three women of destiny, birth (the mother), love (the woman loved in life), death (the Earth-mother at the end), Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos.

In brief, if you choose Walt Disney and babyish fright, you appoint the spiders to the sorceresses and to graveyards, but the spider was admired for her spider web, which she secretes and spins with a consummate art, and her image haunts the 'Web ' which links us up. As for Spiderman, created in 1962 it is the young Peter Parker who was bitten by a radioactive spider and so endowed with super-powers: it is an advantageous and positive hero, endowed with  this rich ambivalence which makes Good coming up from an evil bite ...

Some versions of that myth convey that Arachne after the competition and being blasphemed by Athena committed a suicide. After that, Pallas felt somewhat guilty and to partially recompensate her death (still, she was a better weaver) she ressurected her in a form of a spider. Fact that she was brought back to life may create a connection to being an undead.

You've done a pretty good job, I enjoyed your post, but there's nothing to clarify The so-called debate (for lack of a better term) was about spiders' connection to Neith. Links were given, "debate", as expected, ended.
Ashan united mythological, philosophical and modern images of the spider into one. How good it has done that is a matter of opinions and heated "fan-hater" conversation
P.S.: there's only one tiny mistake in your post - the 3 Fates from Greek myths are called Moiras, Parcae are from Roman myths. However Romans took a lot of things from Greeks so how you call the Fates isn't so important.

I didn't knew spiders were associated with Neith, and she still has no spider symbolism. And having something associated with a god and a god being patron of that element are two very distinct things. It's weak to base the Necropolis spider infestation on this argument. At the very least people feel it doesn't belong to Heroes.

I wasn't serious either, and I think you're taking my own joke poorly.

As for your critique of my responses, I honestly don't care if you find me annoying. I think ill of most of the Heroes community, but I still my tongue from insults and stick around to keep up with the news and general discussion. As for comparing me to War-overlord, I view that as a compliment.

As for "not helping" with my comments, perhaps leave the matter be so that this topic does not get derailed into a back and forth.

Maybe because she was one of the early Egypt goddesses and her weaver aspect is less popular?
Mate, please, I never based Necro spider infestation solely on that one argument. It's more of a supportive one.
Yes some people feel that way and for a good reason - Heroes miraculously hadn't had Spiders (an iconic fantasy creature) as a unit till H7. Rarely there were some spiders in M&M RPGs (and some cool spiders in Dark Messiah). Spiders seem like something "alien". At least if we had some spiders in H2-H4 the reception of H7's Necro could have been different.
P.S.: btw, spiders are really very popular nowadays. Even Dark Souls II (the whole DS series are known for the world's originality) included a Spider boss and a whole creepy area (with Spider church) infested with them. A result of a mistake made by eccentric Duke fascinated with spiders...

H6's Necro screen was okay - its main problem was that it was too zoomed out from the actual town, but most H6 town screens had that problem. H5's Necro screen was among the worst town screens in series history - too dark to see anything, flying around between excessively narrow towers, buildings not looking very distinctive, etc.

Yes, but it had that dark feeling, I am not sure what you've wanted to see? Towers and Graveyards? It was somehow realistic to me, because I could imagine Necromancers, Liches and Vampires "living" in that place.

It certainly was better to me than green party that we had in H6, only thing missing there is horde of Undead dancing...

Oh yes, and it lacks green color, not enough of it in my opinion...

Yeah, Ubisoft can lower your standards quite hard.

But it also goes with the fact that H5 was the best heroes up to date in my opinion.

It wasn't a "dark feeling", it was just dark. It's like the difference between "foreboding" and "hard-to-see". The best Necro town screen was in H3 - it was a proper graveyard, you could see everything but it still looked spooky, you had a good view of the whole town, etc.

Looking at H5's townscreen again, it amuses me to see people criticize H7's spider-leg buildings for access reasons. Seriously, how is one supposed to get from place to place in the H5 town? Practically none of the buildings are on the same land mass, let alone the same altitude.

From a visual and aesthetic point yes, no doubt about it. But it is as unrealistic as the H7 one. The high thin towers that wouldn't be able to support themselves. No means of connection between buildings etc.
That's why I somewhat couldn't understand the dislike of spydie-legs. They are unrealistic? The is a High fantasy game of larger then life statues, endles towers, floating islands and masive buildings.. I think the legs fit into this.

@mvassilev: H5 may have been hard to navigat directly, but that was the case in most H5 towns. They were an aesthetic spectacle. Something that not only people who like the game ador, but most people who saw it were fascinated. The necro townscreen was especially on of those, that made jaws drop.

The problem with H5 Necropolis is, visually, it appears too sci-fi for a medieval fantasy setting. I mean, put the Millenium Falcon in there and you have your alien miners in the sky.

H3 Necro was best in that regard also, since they had the concept right.

H1 town screens: Awsome
H2 town screens: good, but creatures are not shown anymore
H3 town screens: good again, certainly looking like proper castle towns, better graphics than H2, but about the same in quality
H4 town screens: WTF
H5 town screens:  3d camera movement. Some are proper towns, some hard to see buildings, very mixed in quality. Average.
H6 town screens: after they have been upgraded from awfull windows ... military camps in "H1 wannabe-mixed with WoW style". 2D again. Below average for most part. Not proper towns anymore.
H7 town screens: H6 town screens with over-the-top art style.

Is it me, or does it seem like town screens got progressively worse with each new title
