That's not bad, but isn't it just a model from the map? The very thing we disliked Heroes6 pre-patch townscreens for?

It just a part cut from Ubisoft H7 Trailer from IGN channel/Twitch.tv.
In trailer it was camera zoom on Haven city and on start of Academy siege battle.
What you have is just an idea to use these zooms and adventure map 3D models as town screens.

I know he didn't make the models himself, the interesting thing is that no-body else pointed out how close these come to the impression we got from H5 townscreens. And this looks much, much better than the Haven town screen they've shown us so far.

Well the things I disliked Heroes6 pre-patch townscreens for was:
1) They looked bad
2) They were displayed in a tiny window instead of entire screen which killed immersion
3) They looked bad because they were displayed in a tiny window.

And that is why we all hated them plus the fact they were just reused models from the map

Frankly, I couldn't care less if they reused models from the map - no, let me refrase that, I would APPROVE of them reusing models from the map, since that creates cohesion in the game, as long as they:
1) Look as great as these do
2) Are displayed in a proper fashion as shown here

The current suggestion for Haven town screen we have from Limbic makes no sense because it looks nothing like the town we see on the adventure map.

...Yeah, you are right. But that isn't that big of a problem. At least it wasn't in HoMM3

I agree with Alcibiades. This approach looks much, much better.
It brings immersion, sense of massive scale and importance of town.
I would much more appreciate if they choose this way to present towns.

They already have most of the it done, it just needs to few more details to make city alive and thriving. Some housing, vegatation...

Well the problem is, obviously, that they still need some sort of static image to show once the fly-by cinematics are done (or user ends it). Question is whether there are enough high-quality surroundings made to provide a satisfactory setting for the castle in the static screen.

I realise it's yet another Game of Thrones idea, but I really liked the concept they have in their opening credits, where you see the fly-by of every power house in the series. You see each of them sort of "build themselves", rise up from the ground and deploy. How about such a concept for when you're building your structures? That you see them gradually build up? Should be a toggle, because after a few times you're probably annoyed by the time it takes .

I dont think it's a GoT thing. It's one of those things that were used for ages, but since one media or brand became very successful using it, people now automatically associate those two.
It's like like saying Warcraft design is original.

I really don't want 2d town screens in Heroes 7. I just don't understand why they do that... Ubi/Limbic have powerful 3d engine and already quite enough ready content for 3d screens.
So here my 3d town screen suggestion. (sorry for some freezes in video)

I think it's looks some close to Heroes V http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQvbdogfRcc
Isn't looks good?

Ubisoft should hire you immediately... Especially Haven looks amazing. Wonderful job, man.

Thanks a lot, but actually there is not my job, it's just my look from another side to the Gamescom trailers and accomanied with little work of special soft.
By this short video I wanted to show how good 3d town screens can be in Heroes 7.

I find flybys distracting and would've liked the option to turn them off, had they been implemented in M&MH7.

Heroes 6 adventure map town model much less detailed than in Heroes 7. Actually, in my opinion, Heroes 7 town model more than enough detailed. So it's easy can be used for the 3d town screen scene.
Just take a look at the comparison of H5/H6/H7 town models and screens (clickable):

Not all of the pictures a good, but it took by quick search.

Of course it will be switched off after several time of view. But i just have not another video of adventure map town with static camera on it to make direct 3d view of town screen.

Only now, when I see H6 next to H7 town, side by side I notice how different they look like.
Amount of detail and that full 3D look on the map is simply amazing.
I just wonder if that's the way towns will look like in the actual game or this is just one special town made for demo/campaign and actual player towns will look much simpler (like in H6).

In any case, as I said before they have very good starting point to make amazing 3D townscreens, with flyby that can be turned off.
Over six years ago, they made some magnificent 3D townscreens and I wish they bring them back with modern engine.
There is so much they can do to make atmosphere, immersion and sense of achievement with properly made townscreens.

My analysis on Haven town screen.

First of all let me just say that compared to Heroes 6 this is definitely better. A step in the right direction. I like it that they reduced the whole holiness theme and went for a more medieval looking town which in my opinion is what defines Haven first and foremost.

There are still things that need to be adjusted. Some are minor, some just jump at you. Let's take them one by one.

Transition - The first thing you should notice when you enter a town is an immediate change in mood. And part of that "feel" that you are now inside a town is the way you switch from the map to the town. There is a huge difference between seeing another interface opening on top of your current one and a REAL transition to your town. Fortunately, things seem to be different this time compared to Heroes 6 vanilla, but not entirely. What I don't like is that part of the interface remains the same when you enter the town (watch the IGN video), and that the transition is instantaneous, rather than 1-2 seconds of darkening then the towns shows up. I know the town is not final but these are things that need to be addressed because they have so much influence on the way you perceive the game.

Other than that, I don't really see the point of having the map UI even when you're entering the town. That shouldn't be there at all, it serves no purpose and it simply makes you feel like you haven't left the adventure map when you entered the town. And I personally would like to see a return of the full town interface on the lower side of the monitor, like in Heroes 3, with the capitol and castle shortcuts on the left.

Perspective - As others said before me, the current perspective sucks. You feel like you've been cast out of your own town and now you can only look at it from afar. Now, you can't really expect a Heroes 3-like view, because that would be too low and the buildings would obstruct your vision. But placing the viewer somewhere near the top of the wall or near the tower to the left seems a good idea to me.

Appearance - The landscape is just beautiful. Plains and hills all around, mountains with snowy peaks in the back, and even a river cascading to the right. It looks like a habitable environment. I would have put a dense forest near that mountain on the right and it would've been perfect to me.

The buildings on the other hand are not to my liking. All of them are made of stone, no exception. I understand that it would be standard for the military ones, but I really don't see why for the civilian too. Tavern, Market, Blacksmith, those should be at least partially made out of wood and I don't mean only the roofs. The architecture is all around likable but I really hate some features on certain buildings. Like the pointy ends on some roofs and the abundance of columns.

Positioning - By the looks of it, the town is divided into 3 layers:

The town has a progressive feel, from low to high, from basic buildings bellow to more advanced buildings above. But not exclusively. It suggests order and hierarchy to the observer. This is nice to the eye and makes it easier to figure out which building is which. But.. there are things that are simply horribly done.

The wall. Simply put - a disaster. I have never seen such a wall in my entire life. What kind of city builds a wall on just one side? And build it like THAT! On the right of the gate, the wall should've continued until it reached the cascade. On the left, It should've extended up until the foot of the hills then continue behind the city and appear on the right on the other side of the river, uniting the whole structure in a ring when it reached the cascade. The way it looks now is simply incomplete.

The two buildings on the right which I suspect are the Monastery and the Town Portal are out of place. They are outside the wall, especially the Monastery which in the daily life would serve a civil purpose so you'd rather have it near houses. Personally, I would have it moved somewhere on the second level as near as possible to the road.

The bridge and stairs proportions are badly designed. Nothing else to say. Just fix.

The Grail - It's huge. It's shiny. It's unpractical. I really don't see a medieval town building that no mater how zealous the people would be. I would have the grail building be small rather than big and maybe put somewhere else.

There is a quite big area of empty space on the right of the river which to me seems a waste. It should be used to keep visual balance of the town.

Fauna and Vegetation - The impression that the town leaves to you when you first look at it is that it's deserted. Although the buildings are clean and the statues are shining, there's no movement at all. There are only some pigeons flying around but that is just insufficient. No people near the tavern or the houses, no one trading in the market, no guards on the wall and at the gate, no caravans entering the city. No chickens, no dogs chasing cats, no trade with exotic birds in cages. Almost lifeless.

The vegetation inside the city is composed only of grass. There are no trees at all. Nothing near the river. No flowers or bushes. The one building that has a fountain doesn't have a garden around it. I think that some other forms of vegetation than grass should be added to the town. It would improve the environment and make it feel more alive and unified with nature.

Well, that's my contribution. Hope it was an interesting read if nothing else.
