saying "**** happens", is a cop-out(in this case, at least). entirely avoidable mistakes were made, and many people paid the price for the stupidity involved.

talking wont change anything. Beyond some kind benefit from personal expressions talk is worthless unless my feelings would somehow make a difference.

i just took a gander at the comic you posted, artu. is that REALLY supposed to be me? i take that as an insult. you cannot invalidate what i say, just because i have issues with anger. that you see me as some kind of manipulatory TYRANT, is slanderous, to say the least. that comic is PURELY slanderous, and it is DIRECTLY inflammatory.

and btw, posting a comic like that, to try to sway the opinion of myself by others, is what is manipulative, artu.

not you, man. it's the saying that just doesn't apply here. getting struck by lightning out of nowhere is a "**** happens" scenario. doing what that guy did, was just mistake after mistake. i'm surprised he was the ONLY one killed. if that had been a range with occupied lanes next to it, the girl would have to deal with possibly killing even MORE people.

I was very happy to hear you were done arguing, fred, keep at it. Btw, it even makes the comic funnier, that you think what's wrong with the fish is, he's a manipulative tyrant.

missed this gem of yours, artu:

I guess all of these create a unique combination and provides the result we see here.

no, that would be plain old human stupidity. it comes in many colors.

artu said:
Oh, and speaking of pinnacle of intelligence... You just presented a reasoning such as this: "Humanity is stupid and most people can't handle themselves, so it's better for everyone to get armed." It's always an amazing adventure to see great minds at work.

and what you put in quotations here, would be an incorrect use of paraphrasing.

That sentence is obviously about the rate of civilian gun ownership. If "with less than 5% of the world's population, the United States is home to roughly 35–50 per cent of the world's civilian-owned guns, heavily skewing the global geography of firearms and any relative comparison" then, there is a unique sociological pattern there, not something universal to all humans.

And I didn't misrepresent your thoughts with my paraphrasing, you can link the post itself. Somebody who thinks any adult should have access to fire arms would rationally base this on a premise, that your average person can handle themselves with a deadly weapon and they are reasonable to a certain degree of stability. You, on the other hand, went on and on about how stupid they are, how they don't know how to handle even themselves etc etc, the cutest line was this I guess:
Quote:
knowing human stupidity as it is, i still am not swayed to think that humans shouldn't own guns. it's just a stupid argument.

Even if we don't restrict ourselves with developed countries, US is a special phenomenon when it comes to civilians owning guns. Check the statistics here, while number 2 and 3 follow it by rates around 50 percent, it has a rate of 97 guns per 100 residents! It clearly indicates something socio-cultural beyond individual initiative. This isn't about some temporary legislation or which party you vote, it's a unique social phenomenon:

It's not a social phenomenom, there's a very simple explanation for this.

Money.

Finland is 5th highest country on that list and guns here cost an arm and a leg. What do guns cost in the states?
Oh, right. They're so cheap you can buy them in walmart!

See if Finland had guns that cheap, I'd have dozens by now.

That would mean the explanation of the social phenomenon is mainly economical, not that it's not a social phenomenon. You can also say, if demand for guns were more in other countries as well, competition would cause the prices to lower down there also.

I'm sure it's a factor but I'm pretty positive it's not the only factor, also.

if you're going to quote me, artu, then use the whole post. you know, that thing you keep telling me about? context? you leave out little bits here and there, and you're painting a different picture(which is probably the only thing you see, anyway).

And if you are feeling defenseless and without the means to do anything if you lack a gun.. That says more about you than you'd think.

I know that the discussion has moved on, but I'd still like to point out that a weapon isn't for defence, though it could be used with a defencive motive. It is an offensive weapon. A weapon is the common man's tool to wage war, as it has been since the 17th century. Of course a person requires skill, training and conditioning to learn to shoot and handle being shot at, but the bare bones of it is still: "pull the trigger and something dies".

When a citizen's government no longer upholds the creed upon which it was created, (intentions and motives of those running things) then it must be replaced, violence was the means that the founding fathers intended for their descendents, which was their legacy.

This child, and her instructor aren't victims of guns, their the victims of stupidity. Should these people have guns? No, but in America they should.

yeah, i know. i already covered this before. capitalism and marketing have taken over the united states. it's all about what you have, not what you should do. trust me when i say, i'm just as sickened as you probably are about that part. there really is no excuse.

but the same can be said about nearly ALL governments. the issue can never really be fixed.

Aside from the accident itself , two disturbing things :

1 - 9 year old kids apparently have the right to try shooting things. That age is way too low for my taste.

2 - A freaking uzi. I'm not an expert in guns, but considering the low recoil, massive amount of cheap bullets that it spits and overall easiness of use, isn't it a weapon made to kill masses of unarmored ( civilian ) people?
