Recommend M&M X to me?

I loved the classic Might and Magic games even more then VI-VII-VIII, so trust me when I say that the idea of dungeon crawling sounds good - I very much want to pick it up, especially now that there's a DLC for it..? But here's the thing.

Speaking bluntly, I do not care for the blandness of the 'new' Might and Magic universe at all. In Heroes, it's not such a problem because the gameplay is more about the tactics and (perhaps unfortunately) less about the story, but in a dungeon-crawler with call-backs to the other M&M games, story is essential. I was wondering if I could supply some information, and you could let me know if I should give up the ghost and give M&M X a try? :-) I'd very much appreciate it, regardless of what you recommend.

My favorites of the old-school games were Secrets of the Inner Sanctum (I), Gates to Another World (II), and Xeen. I love the difference between outside tilesets and dungeons, random text events, unexpected responses from said events, and random horrific deaths to (pick one):

- Pit traps

- Pit traps with liches in them

- Aging

- *Magical* aging

- Choosing to steal palace treasures on poorly-designed plans to get rich quick. ;-)

Party-wise, re-playability and customization are big with me. I like using 'weird' class/race combinations or builds. Finding new gear is cool and part of the transition from pen and paper to gaming that I felt Might and Magic did pretty well; I especially liked the materials in Xeen though they were pretty poorly balanced.

Storywise - Well, I don't know. I'm blind here. I'm sure some of you have my reservations about Ashan, but did you enjoy the story, lore et all regardless? Were there some interesting twists? Was it cringeworthy, but bearable..?

Thank you again for helping me out! I appreciate it!

I haven't played it, but I hear that it isn't well-praised. Sure, it can be fun to play, but it isn't a masterpiece, either.

I personally would recommend it, but only if you really like dungeon crawlers.

MaM X has some strengths. The combat system is very nice and the game can be really challenging at times. There is a lot to explore and the map is varied and colorful. The skill system is classic MaM VI-VIII style which is nice. Classes are interesting and generally useful.

But at the same time I will not lie about its flaws.
The entire game is grid - based and Tuned based, so be aware, many people don't like it. There are rather few logical puzzles, there are some, but not many, so most of the situations are resolved by combat.
The game lacks randomness in its core. Relics and monsters are set from the start.
Its also not the best polished game. Crashes are rare but the game gets choppy from time to time.

In the end it is a good MaM Dungeon crawler. It has the old school feel of freedom limited simply by the power of creatures you encounter.

Today you have on youtube dozens of speed runs or walkthroughs for every game out, some commented, others not. This is how I buy my games, I never read what people says about as people tend to ignore what is not important to them while is important to others.

This is how I never bought Neverwinter's nights or Baldur's gate. Despite people saying is genial, and I am sure they are, I can't stand tedious inventory micromanagement, which the game-play videos showed plenty examples of. So, just watch someone playing for half-hour, you know if it is your game.

i already watched some lp's, and while the game looks fun mechanically, the op and i are curious whether the writing and story are engaging and add purpose to the combat?

For MMX it was the Robocop moves which made me stay away. I enjoyed so much 6, 7 and 8, hard to believe it culminated into constant labyrinth feeling.

Pretty much It is a lovely game with a good mix of combat and exploration, the H6 assets and terrain look great from up close, music is good. The story is rather linear but there are a lot of diversions and I like the tone of the story and the dialogues. Oh and be prepared for ambushes!

I wish prime was not so damn important though. It is a pain to play without town portal or identify. I hate backtracking as much as I hate paying shopkeepers to tell me what items I am carrying. Some magic imbalances but fun regardless of what you'll pick.

I enjoyed MMX a lot, it gave me that typical MM feeling I had when playing MM 6-8.
Before the game was released I was really annoyed by the fact that it was going to be a grid based game like the ancient MM's. But this was a thing I got used to very quickly.
In the end I liked the whole turn based thing a lot. The combats actually are much more intense than combats in previous MM games(i did not play 1-5).

@Salamandre
Seriously go play Baldur's Gate, it's awesome.

Where is an RPG without this?

___

Did you ever finish MM X Yogi?  Not much story in MM X but not much in the previous games either.  Bioware games focus more on stories if that is what you prefer in your RPG.

I decided to buy the HoMM Humble Bundle a while ago and M&M X was in it.

I finished the game (and most of the side quests). It's really something you expect of a RPG, the story is not very special (and you can see the plot coming from miles) but the combinations, specialisations and weapons are great. Some schools are blatantly voerpowered and theres just a single thing i REALLY HATE. Sometimes you 'save' your game and a second later you are in combat. Once yo are in combat there can nothing be done to remove that untill you, or the opposing monster dies. Since it's an OPEN RPG you can wander somewhere where monsters that single shot you wander and you have to reload a very old save or (i learned the hard way.....)restart.

It's fun that except for combat there also are 'search quests'. riddles and choices to be made

I don't get this. A lot of people seem to be fond of MMX. Even if there were some criticism (like that square tile moment).

But why would it be considered as a failure, alike the failure of Heroes VI? I can only imagine the fact that MM RPG-s aren't much popular as Heroes games are (even if Heroes franchise is a spin-off and was released later).

not yet.  started over a couple times testing party combinations.  mechanics are actually much more important to me, and art, atmosphere, and setting, "story" just has to be decent, as i find few imaginations as wild as mine.  biowares stories are ok, but i find their game play mechanics lacking.  only western rpgs with good stories AND good mechanics i can think of that ive played are the classic quest for glory, xeen, and lone wolf series; and only quest for glory gets atmosphere down.  the best are all asian.

so theres 2 digital lone wolf games that im aware of:
first theres a digital game version of the books called lone wolf statskeeper, at project aon.
then theres the new lone wolf game, which i havent played yet, but the hd remastered version is on my steam wishlist.
