Swamp faction
With all the discussion about the return of a swamp faction I thought it wise to make a separate thread for it.
Thanks to Stevie and Alex_Yakub we already identified a possible home for a swamp faction, in the swamp north of Hashima:
Two possible candidate races are naga and lizardmen.
My proposal would be to combine these two races in a single swamp faction resembling H3 fortress and based on the cult of the wrecker.
A possible line-up would be:
Core:
- Serpentfly
- Kappa (frog-shaped waterspirit, spitting water at high velocity)
- Lizard Warrior (spear wielding tribal lizardman)
Elite:
- Medusa
- Basilisk
- Swamp Thing:
Champion:
- Hydra
(- Raging Kirin)

How much of this is even possible given that there's a 9 factions limit?

None.
But we can dream. And make our wishes heard.

War-overlord said: I'd rather see it without Naga all together. But let me propose a line-up with, as a counterproposal.
Core:
Lizardman Brave;
Sahuagin;
Waspwort;
Elite:
Hexer (Could be both Lizardman or Medusa)
Basilisk;
Cockatrice;
Champion:
Hydra;
Clever Dinosaur-name;
This line-up looks also nice, although imo those LW look too awesome to be a mere core unit. I also don't really like the raptor as champion, especially not when the other champion is a multi-headed raptor. Maybe some Monster Toad would be better?

It's supposed to be a T-rex, or something similar, not a Raptor. The Hydra is due to me not liking Hydra pictures that are either all head or that are walking on 4 legs. The 4-legged variety tends to look too quickly like a multiheaded, evil sauropod. And the awesomeness of the Lizardman is due to me stealing that image from warhammer. The point here is to get across a feeling.

unless the developers stop doing lore in a way that just constricts the lore, the Swamp faction must be Sanctuary in a new setting
I suggest:
Core
Serpent Fly, Kappa, Lizardman
Elite
Medusa (Pearl Maiden), Basilisk, Gorgon
Champion
Kirin, Hydra

In which you succeeded quite well
If I had to choose between a multiheaded raptor and a multiheaded evil flesh-eating sauropod for a swamp-based hydra, I would go for the latter. Being submerged would help the hydra carry around such a large weight, similar to hippo's. They could then us their long necks for surprise attacks from the water. Raptors (and other theropods like the T-Rex) on the other hand rely on short bursts of speed, which I think is difficult (and involves personal danger) in a swampy environment.

Just a shame that necks don't work that way.
As for the Theropod Hydra, I don't see why they could not hunt like crocodiles. Lie in water on the water's edge, partially submerged, the with a short burst of great speed launch themselves out of the water onto the prey.
The added benefit from their thererpod-like body is that they are far less cumbersome on land.

Which is why such constrictions should be let go.

Looking at the original HoMM 3 Fortress to remind myself of it I see little reason to do any major changes to it. It's almost perfect, just update it.
Gnolls are maybe somewhat outta place imo, maybe add some kinda swampy alchemist lizardman of some kind just to get some support in there.
So:
Core
Lizardman (basic melee)
Serpent Fly (quick flyer melee)
Basilisk (debuffing melee)
Elite
Gorgon (rushing melee)
Wyvern (Flying, inflicts venom)
Alchemist (Complex caster, mixes a set of ingredients to provide a variety of buffs/debuffs)
Champion
Hydra (Slow heavy hitter, attacks all adjacent enemies)
I guess an additional Champion is needed so... Coatl maybe
That's how I would do it at least.

I'm sure we can theorycraft a swamp faction. But I really don't feel like it if it's already decided that we can't have one. Seriously, Ubisoft should quit it with the restrictions. Unless we get rid of the current frame, we best think of swamp as an alternative Sanctuary.

We've been saying that since we've noticed what restrictions have been set.
But Swamp-Sanctuary, even though I'm against it, is as much theorycrafting, since it's gonna be Water-Samurai Sanctuary for quite a while yet.

Nice proposals here! I cannot really say which I would prefer. I think I would like Hydra above Kirin as champion, definitely. For the second champion, maybe Coatl would be the best choice, to avoid a second reptile champion. A Toad-Creature would be interesting but feels not so champion to me...maybe as a tankish elite?

Here we go, my version of swamp oriented faction: SWAMPFOLK
i hope you like it
(imgine this kind of places with fog.)
Swampfolk are multi-humanoid raced, isolated faction. they worship a fearful-hydra like many-headed dragon. this dragon god is cruel and sadistic. he demands death, blood, cannibalism and sacrife, even from his own worshippers. every race in swampfolk, even humans, live a savage, primal life due to this traditions.
only those who can live long and succesful life gets rewarded by the cruel dragon god. and those get rewarded usually become witch doctors.
for centuries, this faction remained hidden from eyes of ashan people. (a strong magic fog was hiding them, thats why i wanted to picture a foggy swamp for townscreen.)
CREATURES OF SWAMPFOLK
LIZARDMAN(core)
appearance: as a humanoid lizard weilding bow.
This creatures are one of the main humanoids in swampfolks. they are intelligent as much as other humanoid races and they are expert at hunting things. maybe they dont craft the best bows & arrows, but they know how to poison them.
WILL-O-WISP-(core)
appearance: just like in the picture.
"when encountered, a will-o'-wisp typically takes the form of a faintly glowing lantern hovering in the air. in order to sustain itself, it must feed off upon the electricity generated by the brains of people who realize they are about to die. it is also capable of generating electricity. If the creature does not wish to be seen, it is capable of extinguishing its glow." taken from directly d&d.
MYCONID(core)
appearance: as a medium sized muhsroom humanoid.
these mushroom-beings normally burrow their most part under the swampy soil. they are patient guardians and predators. in the heat of battle, they use their dangerous spores to effect their enemies mind.
BASILISK RIDER(elite)
appearance: armored lizardman on a eight legged basilik.
making this beast charge and attack desired enemy is a big deal, and those who can control good enough does not need any other weapon then the beast itself. this wild beast has very thick scales, very sharp claws and teeth, and most importantly a terrifying gaze that can turn its enemies to stone.
SWAMP GOLEM(elite)
appearance: a giant thick body covered with mushrooms, moss, and insects. it has marks of witchcraft and a giant needle in his back. large creature size.
swampfolk sometimes captures strangers and most of the time, these strangers are thrown in a magical pool. they dont die but they suffer under this water and they slowly grow mushrooms and moss on them. when they have enough on them, their brain welcomes a insect. host loses his control over body but he still lives and feels what happens to him. after the final ceremonies by witch doctors they become complete slaves.
WITCH DOCTOR(elite)
appearance: they look like native humans in amazon forest. with paints and pierced bones on their skin they weild a staff and a dagger.
they are the rewarded ones among the swampfolk. they are cruel, cannibal magicians expert at schools of "control" & "blood". they sometimes spill their own blood to cast their blood spells.
HYDRA(champion)
appearance: crocodile-like hydra. it is big as it can be.
they are avatars of their fearful dragon-god. some say these ageless creatures can kill itself if it grows too many heads over the passing decades.

Yay, I helped create this idea in all seriousness, though, I liked all of this proposals. From Steyn's I loved the fact swampys are lizardmen mixed with nagas from cult of wrecker. From War-overlord's I liked the some creatures from the lineup, especially T-rex and lizardman. I was intrigued by Xerox's idea of swampys being a remixed Sanctuary. Adrius's lineup is also fun, especially coatl. Finaly, from cleglaw's proposal I REALLY liked the townscreen. It suits the faction perfectly, and so I hope that if this faction ever gets added to Ashan, it will use something similar. There, I hope I mentioned everyone

Awesome line-up cleglaw. I would perhaps remove wil-o-wisp seems it's just a glowing orb...
I miss the swamp faction. Wish they returned under a different name...
