You a know, the new layout works REALLY well if you're browsing the site through console.

But then the rest of the site is still stretched way far when you leave front page...

That way your styles won't be limited to just Heroes Boards, people here lurk some places else too, like the VW, OSM, Tavern, etc.

this is a good idea as well. i think the images should still be heroes-themed.

for instance, the tavern could have tavern-style graphics, like you just walked into a pub.

the vw, could have a heroes troll, doing the troll-meme grin?

osm background could be a battleground scene(like some art in the "alternative art" thread)...

or maybe just a dwarf smoking a pipe, with a fez on his head, in an overstuffed chair, looking studious?

In the end, it all comes to Valery. If he can implement skins, then I'm all for having them, the H4 Lizzy posted in the previous page is just beautiful

A classic skin should exist too tho.

The background colour was changed from white to light gray last time I posted in this thread. This seems to have solved the eye pain issue for users who have their screen brightness set too high in low room light conditions. This still left the background lighter than parts of the table and drew more attention to it. After looking at it for a couple of days I've decided that it could be improved. So I've experimented with a few different colours - black didn't work as it blended with table borders, silver blended with category heading rows, and I did not want to add an entirely new colour to the design.

Thanks to Radar's mockups I decided to try the AOH H5 background (the AOH mainpage background seemed a bit too dark). I think it works pretty well - matches the overall colours, fills the empty space dreaded by many, matches theme with the AOH homepage, image of a town coincides with the concept of community, and H5 is probably one of top 2 most discussed games on HC. The remaining issue was that on some resolutions the left-right joining of the repeating background fell outside of the table and this exposed an unpleasant blend line. I fixed this by setting background width to 25% of the page, so on most resolutions the joining points will be either under or just beside the homepage table. Perhaps not a 100% perfect look, but I think this is better.

Some of the theme designs posted here do look pretty cool, especially H4 However, implementing theme support goes way beyond the scope of this upgrade - it would involve quite a lot of programming. My next priority is implementing HOMM7 content so I will not be adding themes at this stage. You are still welcome to draw and discuss possible HC themes in this thread, just know that they will not be implemented at this stage.

For people who are still struggling to adjust to the changes, here is a summary of the suggestions:
- bookmark the old homepage and use it. I will keep it for at least a year.
- as someone mentioned there are web browser plugins that can zoom pages.
- you can try pressing CTRL and + or - (or CTRL and mousewheel) to find a desired zoom setting in your web browser.
- you can resize your web browser window and enjoy better spacing of the new design without the background.

But the best idea is to find optimal zoom level and use the new homepage. Look back at the old one in 3 months from now and see what you think.

To clarify my stance, I am open to constructive feedback, and that is why I created this thread. There has been some good constructive feedback here, as well as some great creativity. But also some overreaction with people exhibiting a disproportionally strong emotional reaction simply because the empty space was moved from inside the table to outside the table.

What I do not appreciate are people who act as if they have a right to tell me what to do. As has been mentioned many times, this is a privately owned forum that is offered to the public for free, and I am not an elected representative whose job is to please the majority. I know that some of these people use adblock to deprive HC of its only source of revenue. Expecting "everything for nothing" is a parasitic mentality and is not welcome here.

What is welcome are constructive opinions and feedback. Constructive opinion is "I think this is good because ..., and this is not good because ..., and I suggest changing ... to ...". "I don't like this" is honest but not constructive. "this is a fugly eyesore" is negative and nonconstructive. I've put some thought and effort into these changes, so the least you can do is put some thought and effort into your replies, and if you don't like something be constructive about it - explain why and suggest some good alternatives.

I like the new homepage better personally. I think the skins proposed by LW are a wonderful idea and I can't see anything better for now. I didn't know adblock was bad to HC, the internet became so polluted in the last 10 years.. I've asked adblock to ignore HC.
I take the opportunity for thanking you about this place, where the passion lives.

Edit : some idea just popped my mind : wouldn't it look more homogeneous to put the empty space everywhere, and not only for main page ?

Yes, I use Adblock, I express my preferences strongly, and I'm not even slightly ashamed of it. I hate ads, and I hate website redesigns even more. But you're right, I'm not paying for it, and so my complaining only has force if you choose to listen to it. So here's a suggestion - make me an offer and if I can afford it, I'll Paypal you some money in exchange for reverting the design to the old page and removing the HC games. How much do you want? I'm willing to pay. Depending on how much it'd cost, I may also be willing to pay some monthly fee to get rid of ads. I'm willing to go from "parasite" to "direct source of funds".

Well that post was a complete turn off. Feedback was offered, valid points were made from both technical and visual standpoints. Whatever you make of that it's entirely up to you. In the meantime I got the answer to my question expressed pretty clearly. So in the light of this I consider my opinion unnecessary to you and excuse myself out of here.

Good day.

well sorry if we hurt your feelings dude, by all means it's your perogative to dismiss the feedback,
but it doesn't seem all that rude or unreasonable to me personally, in any case people ain't likely to dress it up more than they have lol

try to understand your users though, no need to come in and call them parasites lol, I mean you made the change,
I guess backlash is to be expected when a decade old layout gets edited, and not necessarily for the better

btw my sister in law is a real pro web designer, I can probably get her to update the site free of charge if you want

peace out

I have Adblock ON by default, for all sites. I switched it to OFF for HC to get a preview of the disaster and all I got is the animated MMO game advertising on top, which stops after first animation or if we enter a forum.

So frankly, if this is all about, there is basically no difference between ON/OFF, when we know how intrusive and irritating the uncalled publicity can be on the NET. So I will keep it OFF from now, if this can help HC to last longer.

But calling people parasitic because they have the reflex of preserving their net browsing safety is not very cool, though...

Well, i really like the new main page now with the graphics instead of white; it's more handy and still keeps the nice simplicity of this forum which i always prefered over the overloaded look of many other forums. About the idea that it would be more homogenous to have this spaces everywhere; i think that would be good on the overview pages, too, but not in the threads as longer posts would make the site horrendly long.

Something not completely on-topic: would it be possible to implement, without too much work, a next page button? Next to (or maybe instead) the next topic button? that would make browsing on a mobile device much easyier as you won't have to zoom in or try and hope to hit the next page in the long list.

Totally agree with Zeki. Now it looks much better than with the white, blank spaces

I hope the skins idea see the light one day

This is an interesting issue and one that I have seen on other websites as well - except that I do not understand its inner workings. Perhaps you care to elaborate?

As far as I always knew, banners only generate revenue when someone clicks on them. Are you saying that banners also generate revenue by simply loading them into my browser, without further interaction from my side?

In the first case (revenue through clicks) I can be short: I never, ever click on such banners, except possibly by accident, so no revenue would be generated by me using the website. I simply do not trust those banners and yes, experiences in the past (personally, a few times a Trojan horse virus came onto my machine that way and once my MSN Messenger got hijacked through it - and this all through banners shown on reputable sites!) have made me somewhat paranoid about those banners to begin with. About 6 years ago I switched to FireFox with NoScript and AdBlock Plus, and I haven't had a single virus or infection since. So for me, it's not a matter of denying you an income, but only to protect my machine from malicious intent (virus or malware).

But you also say that those banners are the only revenue coming in for the site; how about setting up some sort of donation system? I'm more than happy to contribute to the site, if that means I can get rid of any and all banners for an X period of time while not "leeching" or "parasiting" by denying you your income.
