question, val: if i can only see unanimated ads here at hc, does that mean you're still getting the revenue you need? or does it only work for animated ads?

This is, unfortunately, the common attitude to cope with, in the next years. Most people believe Internet is miraculously designed and build, that once they browse comfortably while sitting on their limp ass, everything should be free: music, movies, games (but strangely they all agree at some point to pay for porn), and that all this pleasant environment we safely evolute in is create by some virtual and selfless superior beings. They do not eat, do not piss or poo. To even think they could make a penny while making your stay relaxed is unbearable and hurts our so sapient sensibility and delicate moral sense.

I genuinely like the tiers of membership idea. I read it and thought "Sign me up for the $130 one". Once I had more money saved up, I'd probably upgrade beyond that.
And unlike others, I don't mind if Val gets rich from this. If he gives us the option to pay for additional privileges, then retires to the Riviera to drink expensive wine and be fanned by servants, good for him.

@ sal: the only stuff i've ever paid for online, was delivered to my house, in a box. and it was always something that i could sell later, and get money back out of it. as long as we're talking about monetary gain via the internet, and all.

i don't mean to rain on anyone's parade here, but all of this "parasitic, non-paying" stuff slaps of hypocrisy, for many members here. i seem to remember people posting that they watch movies for free on the internet? where was this kind of morality then?

I think HC needs a new icon in smiles section:

[the following post isn't addressed to fred]

So he knows when a post is directed to him and when not. Will save a lot of time and energy.

The only one who used the word "parasitic" and talked about not paying directly in a negative fashion was Valeriy himself and he never talked about watching movies for free. So, there's no hypocrisy of that sort regarding this thread. He didn't mean people who use adblock are parasites either, he was criticizing the demanding and bossy attitude of some objections.

Other than that, there is the discussion started by this Verriker guy and his ethics involving not paying for fan sites unless it's strictly for expenses but that's also quite something else.

It is the subject matter, somebody starting to read from page 7 may actually think the disagreement is about such an hypocrisy and then continue to read the upcoming posts within such a context, so we'll have  3 pages of "who said that/I didnt mean it like that/why must we pay" etc.. People usually skip the posts on previous pages. Dont take everything so personal, I didnt point it out because I cant resist the joy of conversing with you.

OK, so let's get this straight:

Does deliberate random clicking on those ad banners generate any revenue? Even if no further interaction is taken with the page you are redirected to? Or is there any counter/tracer which would detect such behaviour?

Very unlikely, it would be too easy to generate bots who click 24/24 H, then becoming millionaire.

Usually you monitor views, clicks, clicks turned into actions and actions turned into profits. The specifics depend on the company and scripting.
You may charge on any/some/all of these. You might also pay on any/some/all of these. It all depends on the contracts made.

Most of the ads are click-based. While some people are determined not to click any ads, most people aren't and that is how revenue is generated. However, it is not a good idea to just click the ads to help the site. Advertisers will notice if clicks are not turning into players and can stop their campaigns, so "helpful clicking" could actually harm the site in the long run. The banner advertisements are meant to be clicked only if the viewer is interested to learn more about the game that is shown on the banner.

That's why it usually simply disregards consecutive clicks made from the same IP.

Changing or modular IP addresses are now common.

Well for once it's not a fast process, you have to restart your router every time for dynamic IP to reapply. And even the dumbest coders can code in MAC number check. There are probably smarter ways I'm not aware of, too.
