1.18 Undefined hero portrait (PoL)

Everyone knows this portrait, but not all HoMM2 players noticed that it is not used in any of the PoL campaigns at all, being only featured in several fan-made scenarios, including the Wizard's Land campaign. He possesses the name "Solmyr" there, which is considered by the community as inspirational for the creation of Solmyr ibn Wali Barad, a famous Antagarich and Axeoth character.
The role planned for Solmyr in possible PoL campaigns is now a mystery and can only be a matter of fan guessings.

I always thought that portrait was intended for Anduran, as there's a knight hero named Anduran, with Sir Gallant's portrait, that can be rescued in the Dominion single player scenario.

This portrait is used in many single scenarios, but all of them cannot be considered "true canon".

Yeah but Dominion is actually one of the official single player map released with Price of Loyalty, it wasn't one of the fan map added in the Gold version. But anyway, it's all wishful thinking.

Back on topic, I'm fairly sure there's more to the canned graveyard than just a map landmarks, I recall skimming through a dump of the Heroes of Might and Magic II graphical assets a long time ago I found an unused battlefield that featured an iron fence and tombstones in the background.

Most probably it is just a rudiment of Heroes 1 Graveyard.

Yet, an info about Anduran is interesting, thank you.

I plan to enrich the Museum soon by adding the 4th section, about the origin of HoMM2 concepts. There is a lot to say, especially if we count Might and Magic 3-5.

Nice find, Leslie! That reversed castle siege looks very interesting.

Also, snooping on one of my backup HD, I found those pictures I was talking about regarding a graveyard battle ground in the resource files:

Also, regarding this bit in the original post:
Quote:
The only clue, though, is left on the official map "Dominion", which is actually not fan-made and is included in the official PoL release. A hero named Anduran and having this portrait is placed in one of the prisons on the adventure map.

There is a jailed hero named Anduran in the official map "Dominion". That jailed hero uses Sir Gallant's portrait, not Solmyr's portrait. Personally I always thought that was a wasted opportunity, like they could have used Solmyr's portrait for that jailed hero, or maybe they intended to use Solmyr's portrait for that jailed hero but forgot or something. But it's all wishful thinking, and Solmyr's portrait isn't used anywhere in the game except in the map editor and in some of the fan made maps.

Great post! I am new here and I am wondering how could I publish my own HOMM2 maps for public? I have been designing maps with my friends for a few years, but never published them. Now I figured they could serve some good for others too.

Please advise!

You can do that both on Celestial Heavens and on Forums of Enroth.

P.S. Thanks to everyone who posted here, I may have a very decent update for the thread closer to the New Year Holidays.

Again a "thank you post", Heroes II was the game that started my own appreciation for HoMM and for computer games in general, even. I can never forget it or stop liking it.

It seems every once in a while I still uncover things about this legendary game that were otherwise unfamiliar to me despite so much scouring on the web. For instance the things in this thread! 2 years ago, I came upon the midi version of the main menu music and was blown away at how different and awesome it was. Late last year, I stumbled across this supposed 'demo' theme for Necromancer ....

Don't know the awareness on this among the diehards and people who played HOMM2 since its very inception, but this right here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=glwaGKIF8ys seems to be the true, TRUE Necromancer theme that, for whatever reason, was not part of the official release?

Anyone know if that was really part of the game's 'demo'? (It might have been fan-made, but I do not know)

That sounds like the theme chosen for the barbarians with a morose funeral march melody thrown on top of it huh?

That 'demo' theme is just so, so fitting for the necromancers! Assuming that was the true demo theme, NWC should have stuck with it for the undead faction.   *** (I am hopeful it finds its rightful place in the upcoming latest version of the super-exciting Succession Wars mod

The other 'official' themes didn't really fit Homm2 Necromancer (apparently I'm not alone on that opinion)... although the supposed Price of Loyalty Necromancer theme is one of the most awe-inspiring compositions ever conceived.

Edit: it seems this might have been part of the vanilla form of the game soundtrack, sans POL expansion. Lol I am just confused because people in the YouTube commentary are discussing different versions of the game...

There is an interesting article in Gregory Fulton's memoir about the circumstances of making the Heroes2 Gold extra maps.
