Big trouble running HOMM4

I've tried everything but can't solve my problem. When I start HOMM4 it's screen appears in three blurred copies, and it's full of vertical lines. All the game is just like this. I can't see almost anything. I use Win XP Home Edition.

This is what I found in the README file:

"Problem: After launching the game from the Start menu or Desktop icon, you get a blank screen, a black box that surrounds the mouse cursor, blurring or choppy graphics, vertical lines on the screen, choppy sound, or no sound.
Answer:  There is probably a conflict between your video or sound card and Microsoft's DirectX."

But I can't find anything wrong with my Direct X, or my video card drivers.

My system is:

AMD Duron(tm) Processor 958 MHz
Motherboard Asus A7V-E
512MB RAM
Seagate 40GB HD 7200 RPM
NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 100/200 - 64MB
Samsung SyncMaster 3 Screen

I've already got the latest drivers from NVIDIA, and done all the updates to the Win XP...

I was begining to think it was a problem of Win XP, because my brother has a computer with an ATI Video card and Windows 98 and he can run HOMM4 very well.

If any of you know how to solve this problem please tell me. I've spent my money on the game and I'm a big fan, but I'm unable to play... As if life weren't bad enough...

Thanks in advance for all.

Under WindowsXP, make sure that you shut down any non-system background
applications.

Video Card specific:

- ATI(TM) Radeon 7200/8500/DDR and Xpert 2000/Rage 128 Pro Based cards -
If you get a graphic corruption on the mouse cursor, disable cursor and bitmap
accelerations. Double-Click the 'Display' icon in the control panel. Click the 'Settings'
tab, click the 'Advanced' button, click the 'Troubleshooting' Tab then move the
'Hardware acceleration' slider one notch to the left.

- Hercules(TM) 3D Prophet 4000XT and 4500/Kyro Based Cards -
If you get a graphic corruption on the mouse cursor, disable cursor and bitmap
accelerations. Double-Click the 'Display' icon in the control panel. Click the 'Settings'
tab, click the 'Advanced' button, click the 'Troubleshooting' Tab then move the
'Hardware acceleration' slider one notch to the left.

- Voodoo(TM) Rush -
Various graphics problems. Animations uneven.  Pixel remnants appear around
mouse cursor. At all resolutions.  No known workaround.

- Permedia3 -
Very poor performance under Win98. Slow mouse cursor tracking.  Very slow
screen transitions.  At all resolutions.  No known workaround.

- Diamond A50 / SIS 6326
Very Poor performance with the latest Sis drivers.  Diamond drivers are
recommended.

- Creative Labs Graphics Blaster Cirrus Logic CL-GD5464
Slow animations at higher than 800x600 resolution.

Other:

- Running on Non-English versions of the Windows Operating System -
If you are using a non-English version of Windows and a non-English keyboard,
before entering a game please reconfigure your game controls by going to the
'Controls' panel under the 'Options' screen from the Main Menu.

I've read all that. But like I said, my video card is a NVIDIA Geforce 2 MX 100/200. And it isn't in that list. I still couldn't figure out what's happening. I've already tried closing all programs and non-system background programs...

FYI.
I have WINXP PRO and a Nvidia card also and have no problems whatsoever.
Is it a bought game?(have to ask )
Have tou tried a reinstall?
Do you have the 1.3 patch?
Did you have AV software running when you installed the game?
Try moving the hardware acceleration down a notch.

Yes, I've bought the game. I've patched it to v1.3 and it haven't worked. I tried to reinstall it after disabling my Norton AV. Nothing seems to function. And like I've said, it works perfectly well in my brother's computer, under windows 98.

XP settings

Revived this topic too help out members

I. troubles with the mouse cursor.

This is most certainly caused by the graphics card driver and/or resolution
1st
try changing game resolution. Or if you start the game in 'windowed' mode, set it to full screen
Change these in the main screen (in the game), under options -> Game Settings

Game Options

NOTE1

2nd
Update your graphic driver, see vendor or manufacturer website for latest drivers

II. version info and compatibility issues
When you need to know your version of homm -> rightclick on the heroes4.exe and choose properties -> second tab is Version

Version info:

On some XP/windows 2000 computers the game doesnt run. A nice option is to change the compatiblity mode of the heroes4.exe.
You can do this by:
rightclicking on the heroes4.exe and choose properties -> third tab is Compatibility change  to either windows 95 or 98

Changing compatibililty mode

III. Registry settings
When you get errors installing a patch or re-installing the game after a de-install

Registry settings are as in the picture
When you de-installed the game you should delete the registry keys too, if they resided. Be sure you only delete the appropriate key (only the "Heroes of Might and Magic IV" key)

Registry settings

NOTE2

To edit the registry -> start button -> execute -> type in: "regedit"
You can search for the Heroes string by using 'edit' -> 'search' in the menu (or CRTL+F)

WARNING: everything changed in the registry is executed immediate. There is no undo option once closed. So only alter the "Heroes of Might and Magic IV" key

NOTE1
You can also if the Equilibris mod is installed, -> left bottom

NOTE2
Language and version info can are here too
language 409 = US English

crash-runtime error

runtime error

i need a clue, sorry if this problem has been discussed elsewhere, but i've looked around and can't seem to find it anywhere.  after posting in various incorrect forums, i was sent here.

homm 4 crashes w/the following error:  Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library, then something about an unusual termination.

i am running the following:

Operating System  Windows XP Pro v5.1.2600
DirectX Version  DirectX 9.0
Adapter Description NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200
Driver Version 6.14.10.9147
CPU Model/Name   Intel Pentium 4 Processor with MMX(TM) Technology
CPU Speed  1.5GHz
Total Physical Memory 512MB
% Memory Used  67%
Resolution  1024 x 768
Color Depth 32-Bit
Max Swap File Size   1.22GB
Available Swap File  874.48MB
TCP/IP Protocol    Installed
3DO Title  Heroes of Might and Magic IV-all, including all patches
language 809 (eu)
also h4mod equilibrius, ver 3.5

the game runs great for awhile then crashes.  i believe i read someplace (although i don't remember where) that this had something to do with editing maps. and the exe file.  i also had this problem in homm3, but it didn't start happening again in homm4 until i starting changing my maps.  this is bad because i can no longer do anything, just play for awhile.  no particular incident seems to trigger it.  i have only been playing homemade maps, so i don't know if it happens in premade ones.  i thought my troubles were over when i got homm4.  no such luck.  l will try to reload, but please tell me what to remove from registry, i feel okay doing this.

later...

Hi,

Sorry for the bump, but I think I know the sollution to the Windows Virtuall C++ problem. I experienced something similiar when playing Dead Space on pc. I got crashes with the same error until I read a thread where someone said that it was caused by having a joypad/stick in your pc when playing.. The solution would then be to unplugg it. I can't confirm if this works since I'm playing it almost error free on Vista(problem with mulitplayer)

Been playing HoMM 1 thru 4 on windows XP SP3. Wish I could report a problem playing the game. My Map editors worked for a while, but now, since my RAM is small Spybot and AVG have eaten the RAM alive. But the games play fine withoout any crashing.

The only systems problem I've had with HoMM4 is that my new computer has high end graphics cards and hard drives and the like, that money should not be able to buy...but it refuses to play HoMM4, even though it passes on all the requirements a thousand times and more over. My only conclusion is that the machine is too high grade for the game.
