That is just a personal preference, I can't associate it with the creature maybe I am too closed-minded.
I guess I just love this kind

I too support the idea of making cyclopses warfare units.
I wouldn't like the behemoth to kick the cyclops out, but if it is retained in the form of warfare unit then I will be celebrating the return of the behemoth with you guys
Making the behemoth a form of cyclops is also fine with me, but I think lots of old fans will be very disappointed when that happens.

Concerning your line-up: isn't the gnoll a mauler-equivalent?
My suggestion would be to put the centaur in core, freeing a spot in elite for an H5 slayer-like orc.

The line-up would then become:
Core:
Mauler-equivalent Centaur
Gnoll (= Mauler-equivalent)
Harpy
Elite:
Shaman (H5 preferred)
Basilisk rider
Centaur Orc/Ogre (as seen in this picture)
Champion:
Behemoth
Wyvern

In my case, the Gnoll was a Goblin Replacement, as a weaker ranged unit. I actually want an orc, not an ogre, and thus kept the Mauler in. However, your idea is pretty good, and the more I think on it, the more I like the idea of the Centaur being core too. It'd make Gnolls, Harpies and Centaurs, all beastmen, under the ranks of the Shaman and Orc brute (could be "ogre", but with no true "mauler", could just be Slayer equivalent from H5, or indeed the "ogre" in your picture) showing that although the Wizards could make replacements for Orcs, they were never as good as the original blend of human meat and demon spices. It'd also show off that the Rakshasa is the only beastman that could go toe to toe with Orcs, which is why the Wizards treated them so well.

The Ogre in Steyn's picture is, in fact, an Orc. An Orc Warmonger to be precise, the prestige-class of the Orc Barbarian in M&MX.

I was pretty sure it wasn't, which is why I put it in quotes when I was saying I liked it. I didn't know the real name, so thank you for that!

I guess one of these days I should play that game.

Because this is a game based off mythology, not X-men? Seriously, where is the justification for this ability, because I can't remember ever coming across it in any other fantasy literature, albeit I haven't really looked for it in particular.

perhaps the justification for the Cyclops laser eye borrowed from the X-Men is that it was fun
once upon a time we had MM games which were made with fun in mind and fun to play hue hue hue

Throwing rocks makes much more sense (and is equally unique), and is no less fun. Laser eyes is something that works best (though IMO still not particularly well) on some sort of golem.

While I agree that there's no mythological equivalent that uses laser beams, the fact is that it has been used in 4 of the 6 Heroes of Might and Magic games so far (even though I think to remember that in H1 and H2, it was a point-blank attack, not ranged - but as a tradeoff, it could hit 2 squares like a breath attack). I can't speak for the Might & Magic series, as I never played those.

Anyway, I wouldn't miss it if they're only able to throw rocks.

It was only ranged in H6 though, in H1, H2 and H5 it was as you said melee attack. I also favor Cyclops to be huge beasts that use hands, clubs or throw rocks. I am not a fan of that laser beam.

Favorite Cyclops was H5 by far, it was the largest creature on the Battlefield, which made him really terrifying, it was one of the toughest T7 creatures to take down, with enormous damage, both upgrades could attack multiple targets(through laser beam breath-like attack or with crushing blow hitting multiple squares), they could throw and eat Goblins which was super awesome and they looked great.

H6 Cyclops looked like a... giant red Frogs, really, that design isn't bad for something else, but it doesn't fit Cyclops at all in my opinion and I hope that new design is at least closer to H5.

Although I agree that goblin throwing was a good and sensible ability, it was still a ranged attack. Furthermore, it was easy to use (there were always tons of goblins in one's army), however, much weaker than standard, melee attack. Therefore I would call Heroes V cyclops semi-ranged units.

Yes, but we were talking about laser beam, it was ranged only in H6.

I really liked Goblin throwing, especially because it was (a lot) weaker than his normal attack. It didn't turn Cyclops into Titans, it was there to make Cyclops do something if he couldn't get to the enemy units fast, or if he would get into uncomfortable position by charging in.

I was never a big fan of laser cyclops - to my eyes, it just doesn't fit them.

They do make for awesome rock throwers though. H4 Cyclops are so much fun

PS: I wouldn't mind seeing Trolls backs though, they had their charm in H2

I agree with both of you. Trolls could fit both Stronghold and Fortress, though it whould wholly depend on background lore of the creature.

cyclops are connected to throwing rocks too. They did after Oddyseus escaped in his ship

but Heroes is based in pop culture deciption of mythology, not mythology proper. So its ok to have eye laserbeams
