Different editing politic for modding threads

While I can imagine some reasons why posts in an opinion thread shouldn't be edited years latter when I asked Salamandre why didn't he corrected an obvious mistake in a tutorial, like the so many times someone reports that the link to a mod is dead (see 60 Mods for Era for a bunch of examples) I got the same absurd awser: a post with more then a year can't be edited.
Now, complex mods and maps often take more then a year to be completed and some others are remade years latter. But after a while we can't edit the pages nor delete misleading links or basicly take any action.
I think this policy should be revised and would love if that could be done before I start openning threads for my own mods. I would hate to open a new thread everytime I find a way to improve an older code.
And I believe I'm not alone in this.

It's not a policy, when Sal says you can't edit posts beyond a year it's not because he isn't allowed, it's because HC is programmed unintentionally (I assume) to not allow it. (i.e a bug)

This is not a "bug" message, it must be intentional feature programmed by someone with little imagination.

This edit block really cripples modding community. However, it does not stop people from necroing threads 12 years old - what's the purpose then?

It was before I joined, but I recall being told that some poster made a lot of good threads, got angry at some point and because he could edit posts more than 1 year old, he could delete all he'd contributed with.

I might be mixing some stuff up though.

Just like ohforf said, this policy is not a bug, it is very intentional and it is here to protect the history of HC. It was put in places after certain events that happened before my time.

There have been several debates about its necessity and I suppose you're free to start another one and try and change it. In the meanwhile, there are ways around the problem. Mods can edit any post in their forums, so when the masterpost becomes too old, you can quote-copy it to a new post and ask a moderator to edit the first post with the link to the new masterpost. I have seen this done with success in several threads (including my own), sometimes multiple times per thread.

Or just ask a mod to edit your original post.

Yeah Xarfax got pissed off and deleted A LOT of quality H3 content.

Guys, be nice and let us try to gather Valeriy's attention. Don't tell me how to work around this problem because it doesn't bloody work.

Threads with 102 mods links (constantly randomly deleted by hosters) + 780 images html thumbnails codes (randomly deleted by imageshack every now and then) can't be edited by asking a moderator.

This is serious issue, if it doesn't concern you, why jump in?

That was only one crazy guy ages ago. In this one, rare case admin could un-delete these few posts.

Instead, you introduced solution that solves hyphotetical, non-existing problem but causes much more problems to those who actually create new quality content. Just admit to wrong decision and roll it back.

Yeah, I try that. Recently Corribus replied after a few days that he doesn't know what thread to edit. Despite this thread is sticked, 5 years old and updated every few months.
Corribus underlined and explained he's not interested or does not follow H3 modding scene, so you can't rely on moderators anymore.

Corr does editing if asked, the reason I don't ask is because I need to code my self how thumbnails display, where exactly links are placed and so on. This is only the thread maker business and moderators can't help.

In some old threads I used Celestial heavens to test the editing data first (lol, sorry Kalah)then save as text file but since they changed the code for colors and images I can't anymore.

Would be nice if this decision is reversed, at least for wog forum.

You can send HCMs to yourself

Then just send the whole raw text form to the mod.

That's how I do it.

it should at least be able to be implemented for certain threads, or for certain master posts(by the user who made them). although i don't know myself how such a thing could be implemented.

Well, if not to remove the 1-year block, HC will be swarming with the dead and alive threads with the same mods. I already plan to create a new one for H3SW with the v0.8 beta release. The old screens are too outdated and people are very much mis-informated about the current state of the project.

I did not mean to sound hostile in any way.
All I did was explain the current situation, invite you to try and change it and give you a solution until you do.
And I did not ask you to PM Corribus with every edit you need. I suggested to ask a moderator to edit the first post of the thread once a year so that it would link to a new post you canhandle in any way you like.

I think won't be too hard. The code already does not let you remove the post if it is main post. So maybe make editable only main posts, and keep non editable the others.

makes sense. i don't see why everyone else in hc's history(or future) would get punished for the wrongdoings of one poster. that's ridiculous.

It's not WILL BE is IT IS. We have an Era thread with 107 pages and after that another one was created "60 mods for Era" now with 23 and yet if someone creates a new mod for Era it will have to be linked somewhere else cause main pages are blocked. This goes on and on but is not the worst part: imagine Kegolo decides to renew Covenant (just to give an example). The Covenant thread has been more or less dead for months if not years, now or he opens another thread about the new version with a new main post and forgets last thread or he posts the link somewhere in the middle of the thread or (propused "solution") writes a missive to the moderators asking permition to send them a new main post with another link. Do you see a solution here?
Salamandre already has two threads for TEW4 and Succession Wars will have them in a while.
Not having main threads and instead having one, two, three (fourteen?) threads for each important mod is misleading and a keeps the forum unsearchable.
It took me one year to learn enouch about the struture of the site, to feel confident enouch to start searching (and finding) the information needed to create my own mod. Yet a lot of things are there, sometimes even repeated, only the information is lost in the 76 pages of dead or desactualized threads WoG and Beyound already has.
This needs a solution and it can't be: if is older then one year start again somewhere else.

Yes, double threads are extremely confusing. Not to mention that once the old thread goes out of circulation, people start to ask questions already answered in a most elaborated fashion in the past but this time, in the new thread, the instructors are fed up and they give short answers. There are many guidance threads that are now lost and buried in the wilderness and one main index thread that can be edited all the time would be a huge comfort.

this. it's really, really needed. constantly answering questions that have already been answered, is a bane of many old heads here. it would prevent a lot of annoyance, and get people off to a better start, among people here; and to find what they need, to do what they want.
