Poll Question:
Reviving ICTC?

Hello everybody. Just thought "H7 is coming up and everybody is in mood for new stuff and there are many complaints about lineup so: Wouldn't it be a time to try to revive the ictc?" I know the last one(s) did not go well at all, but maybe with the H7-hype we can do it again?
So, I thought I'd just ask your opinions. Who would like it? Who thinks it is a waste of time? Are there people who'd be wlling to judge? Are there people who'd like a faction/town competition but not as ICTC?

Ah, before I forget: Who does not know what ICTC is: It is short for "International Create a Town Contest" and is a competition in town/faction creating. Every participant can create their won town in a given time and afterwards all towns are judged by one or more judges (mainly depending on how many would be willing to judge, I think^^). I tis mainly for fun, usually, but we also had prizes in earlier ICTCs.

I hope for many answers. (and of course I hope that they're positive )
Greets to Y'all,
Jiriki9

p.s.: If anybody else has already opened such a thread elsewhere and I ahven't seen it, or the mods have their own plans, they may feel free to delete this, of course.

Responses:
I would participate in ICTC
I would be willing to judge ICTC
I would both be willing to judge and to participate
I would not take part in ICTC
I wouldn't take part in ICTC, but like a different facton-creating competiton(which?)

I might be willing to participate if we have at least 5 people willing to judge this time.
Can I enter with my previous town, since it never got judged anyway?

Perhaps some of the insiders could get some Ubi stuff/ICTC stuff to hand around.

Well, that seems not so bad for a start...4 willing to participate and 2 willing to judge or participate. =)

I, personally, would do both, with maybe slightly favoring judging right now...

EDIT: and geny, I am pretty sure you can. I, at least, would have no objections^^

I'll judge and create a non-scored entry.

I was planning on taking the same initiative and getting this going, except I was going to wait till H7 was released, but I'll do it now.

I'd say this is pretty much crucial to getting any action in ICTC.

I also think the ICTC could benefit from two new rules:

Faction size limit
Gives judges less work, allows competitors with less free time to still have a shot. Seriously if you reserve three posts for your faction... graagh. Thr ability to be short and coherent would be put to the test, rather than the ability to write supa-long epics.

Image limit
As it is,  I find the photoshop savvy people have been very dominant in competitions as these as they can nail the presentation so perfectly. I would suggest a three image limit to mitigate this somewhat, or just ban images all together. Also serves rule one by making the entry shorter.

As it is there is not enough information for me.

What are the rules? What does a town need to have? Are we limited to Ashan lore or anything like that?
What are the points that judges will judge on? Originality, consistency, coolness factor?
Is there a goal or a prize? Wouldn't that motivate town creation rather than just judging?
Should users be able to both compete and judge? Wouldn't that result in a conflict of interests?

Until someone takes responsibility to organize the activity and provide information, this ain't happening. At least not for me.

I'm guiltier than a raccoon in a trash can of huge factions and image editing for great presentations, but yeah, I concur with this. The people with the excellent presentations & images probably deter the people that just want to enjoy making a faction.

Actually, I'm going to insist since I think this is a big deal. I'll judge & participate if we put these restrictions on the faction-making.

What are the rules?

Actually, in former times the rules were not so strict, to leave much to the competitors' own inspiration.
There were non-ictc competitions, however, which were more narrow, usually going in rounds and giving tasks.

Quote:
What does a town need to have?

Well, I think there are no clarified for this either. In past I participated as judge as well as as participant and I think a faction requires at least:
-the basics, which, to me are: name and short descrption of the faction to give an idea what it is about
-a lineup^^ because for a homm-faction that's very very crucial. And with lineup I mean not only the names stated, but at least a short descripton of the creature, including a bit of gameplay info (at VERY least their role!). Creature background and appereance are definitely cooler to have in but not, I think, part of the lineup-skeleton
-a hero class, maybe with racial.
-a town. This can be only town name and short description
-faction background. I think a BIT of background is needed. Need not be much, but a bit should be in. Else one has no idea what the faction is about

Things which are not necessary and thus not in this list are many, for example:
-relations to other factions
-town buildings
-town style
-a campaign

But, as Adrius said above, maybe there should be more restrictions?

Quote:
Are we limited to Ashan lore or anything like that?

In classical ICTC you are limited to NO lore. You can use Ashan, Enroth, Axeoth, or simply invent a new one.
Iirc you are also not limited to

Quote:
What are the points that judges will judge on?

This depends on the judges. Maybe it would be determined before, so everyone knows what they have to aim for.
Quote:
Originality, consistency, coolness factor?

Well, originality was usually taken into account, I think. I'm not sure what you mean with the other two...consistency shall be internal or with other lore or both? and coolness factor seems a bit too depending on the individual judge, no?

Quote:
Is there a goal or a prize? Wouldn't that motivate town creation rather than just judging?

There was a few times before, but that would need some insiders to get some, probably. And/or maybe mods coudl grant stars to the winner/s?
Discussing this makes me a tiny bit miss the times when we massively just did factionmaking for fun^^ though I can understand some people would like more encouragement. Maybe someone has an idea of alternative "prizes" that could exist?

Quote:
Should users be able to both compete and judge? Wouldn't that result in a conflict of interests?

I think we once had participants judging each other, though I'm not sure it was on ICTC or just a "free" competition in faction-creating...Back then it was you cannot judge yourself and only those who judged all others would be counted or sth like that.

Quote:
Until someone takes responsibility to organize the activity and provide information, this ain't happening.

As you might have noticed I started the first
And in this post, the second as well. I am not going to be able to run ICTC alone, but I would really like to see it happen again.

Now, Adrius' ideas...
Quote:

Faction size limit
This is so hard...I really understand what you mean and I think it may not be that bad an idea, though of course I'll miss the monstrous bulks we had before The question would be if all or most others agreed and then how exactly it would be limited? Pieces of information? Post length simply? Words? Signs? Sentences?

Quote:
Image limit

Another tough thing, I think this might drive some away. Though I somehow like it, because I like to judge a faction in itself and the faction-creating ability and not photoshop or photo-picking skills...

EDIT:
seeing (even ) blizz agree to these I think we can take them in. The question would than be which exact limit would we want?

I'd say:

1) No images
2) You have to get it all in one post (which still ought to be plenty of room, but I'd prefer that over specific word limits) Judges can't be subjecuated to some random guy that drops in and writes 30 paragraphs of historical narrative about the cullinary habits of jungle gnomes. Nobody cares.

No images at all or no photoshoped images?

I agree on the latter, it's not an art contest and photoshop skills should not determine the winner. The only exception may be the faction symbol, which is usually quite small and simple and can be done in paint.

But I don't think that images should be banned. At the very least there should be an option to put in images of the creatures. People may use less known monsters for their line-up and visual aid found on the internet would help a great deal. That and possibly one image for the faction as a whole to illustrate more or less how it looks and what feel it has.

I don't see the reason for no images at all, it's a lot harder to describe something using only words than to look up an appropriate picture on google or deviantart or something.

then how about a limited number of pics?

I see it a bit different, though. I personally nevrer feel to find a TRULY fitting pic and like it better to describe. But for the JUDGES they will in 90% of the cases be influenced more by pictures because it is an easier access...

However I can understand these objections. so what about a limit of the number of pictures then? maybe 1 pic//creature + 1 for faction symbol + 5 else or  such? having less may be difficult...

That's a massive amount lol, more than me and Blizz use for our insane way-too-much-free-time factions.

I agree on the latter

Eeeh how you gonna control that? Everyone review their sources or what? Can I resize my pics? What about cutting out parts of the pic? I don't even use photoshop mwahahah.

Just ban pictures.

I dunno, I just don't think that the 15 minutes needed to find good pictures on the net are so much effort that it needs to be banned.

If you can do that stuff in 15 minutes then I applaud you. I used to spend hours upon hours on finding the right material.

I just wanna nerf people like me hahah.

But I also think ICTC could just benefit from being a bit... different for once?

The Harmony competition was the best faction creation contest this forum has ever had specifically because it forced you to be creative in a way you weren't used to.
