In my game I focused all out on my navy and economy thus built coastal cities. My friend just went for religion and ground army, and he was surprised that I blockaded his ports when his filthy fascism began to spread in my lands, idk what religion does, but it's safe to assume that if an opponent's religion is taking hold in your lands, then you take it as an act of aggression.

Yeah, it feels like your issue is mainly with very bad maps you play. I don't recall the map generator being that bad though
The early civs definitely weren't legendary for their great combat. In fact, I might arque the opposite

Stevie, you're right, I'm not a tactical player. In fact, I dislike war altogether - I prefer to play Always Peace games, where I can build up my cities and expand culturally without armies bothering me.Lexxan said: Clearly you haven't been playing C5 long enough Mvass, because Culture flips still happen. The requirements are different though.
Fair enough. I can barely sit through a game of Civ 5, while I can play Civ 4 for hours and hours. In any case, culture flipping is more difficult in 5 than in 4 or 3.

Reading everything, sounds like Civ 4 would suit me better. I also like building up cities and advancing in culture and technology much more than war tactics and micromanaging everything click by click is one of the things I hate in a game, especially if I'm going to spend hours in front of it.

Civ 2 Test of Time was the best, for a lot of reasons. You got a problem with a superpower? Go fundamentalism, build fanatics and blow up their power plants. OOps, 9/11, took the game too literally, it seems. After that dun was over. No more terrorists, sorry.
Anyway - don't you think that the TACTICAL part of actually leading armies is the worst part in any Civ? Followed by the fact that you have way too much control about research, it's just mnot working that way.
There is this boardgame, Through the Ages, and it beats any Civ game, be it board or computer, by a Mile.

@Doom
I've played (and still own) every Civilization game, including the first. It's actually incredible that each game in the series is so different, given that the object is essentially always the same.
For me Civ 5 is the best of the last three. I probably played 2 more than any of them, but technologically it'd be too dated for me to go back and play again now.
@artu
I don't feel there was less micromanagement in Civ 4. The tactics were just completely different.

Yeah, I became very picky and contagious to messy interfaces.
Civ 2-4: double click on target, target adds automatically to queue build if possible. Civ5: city windows closes once you click on what to build. Then have to open another one, click on queue small box, click confirm, then click on target to add, click confirm. As I said, this game is more about what to not do rather about what to do.
Even with legendary features, as build artworks, something we don't often see in other games, classy and refined, we agree: the terrain resources automatic sound activity are not disabled, so you get a 5 seconds awesome recording of the Beethoven's Missa Solemnis, for example, with a cow mooing and a pig squealing in background.
Inspiring.

It is interesting that civ4 didn't have one city challenge (OCC) in both game or editor options, but it was highly playable. Civ5 has the option but is totally broken and unplayable.
Playing OCC on King (which isn't even difficult) but once you get in modern era, inflation kicks in. Which means that every turn, without building anything, your deficit is increasing by 1.
At this time I am surrounded by 3 AI and I need, if not big army, a decent one and highly effective. So I need a few bombers, arts and workers to fix damages. At this moment, I got into negative gold and my army isn't even big:
Hopefully I had that honor policy completed and gathered huge gold by killing barbs but now they aren't anymore around. I am only at "flight" so 200 more turns are expected, this means up to -200 gold/turn. I don't see how can be made, because with fewer army I will be eaten alive, this is minimum.

Has anyone else played Beyond Earth? I was really psyched about it when it came out because I greatly enjoy Civilization V.
After playing it though, I find it to be lacking.
Victory conditions aren't really that unique just requiring you to either kill 'em all or research X, build X, and then defend X.
I miss the religion mechanic. I understand it is the far future and religion may or may not have the impact it does today but it was another interesting path to pursue. I imagine if it is implemented, it will become a virtue.
Another feature I miss are the great persons. It was always great to have one appear in your empire, often granting you a nice bonus at a critical time.
Overall, I really like the game. I love watching my units grow strong as I pursue an affinity. Virtues are a great replacement for culture. The tech web is interesting. The music is great. The aliens and miasma are neat additions to the formula despite the aliens really not being that grave of a threat. That said, however, it still feels like a hollow experience. I have not played it about a month and just do not feel motivated to do so. And that's a shame.

For all its flaws, Civ5 is still the best game I ever played. By a fair margin.
Haven't played BE yet. I hear it should have the usual launch issues, and have never played Alpha Centauri, so haven't really been on the jump for that one. I really like the idea of the tech web however, looking forward to see that in Civ 6.

I have one game of Beyond Earth behind me and so far I am not really loving it, but I want to play it again. So I reserve my judgement. My fav is number 4 btw, if that matters.
I am a science fiction fanatic, and I thought this would be a slam donk for me. But not yet. But Civ games take time so I might be loving this in a month lol. I just don't have much time to play! I hate my life, jk, but seriously if I was 10 years younger I would probably have played 10x more...

OD, you know what's a good thing to do? Not to buy the game after it's just been released, play the cracked version, and buy the complete edition if you think the game is worth it.
That's how I do it at least. My money's limited and I can't take risks buying something that I might not like.

By the way, anyone here remembers Civilization: Call to power?
I really liked that they went beyond modern and we could research those plasma tanks and stealth x-fighters. Underwater and stratosphere being up for colonization was also awesome.
Shame that classic Civs don't even attempt that.
