But with digital distribution where you buy just a license from a distributor likely in another country from where you reside then it isn't the same thing. Or as easy as that, at least.

You'll still get security updates and patches until 2020 so no worries there.

Taken from comments on the same page, none of this are available for XP anymore, and frankly that is the reason why there are no publishers willing to make stuff for it. Because if you want to sell software, it has to work, and you can't guarantee that if the system is not patched...

That being said, after they stop supporting windows 7 altogether it will start fading away just like windows XP did.

Just a small comment. How much a system is supported, doesn't mean it will be getting new security updates and patches. In fact windows xp last update was around 4 years before the official end of support. So today it is safe to use it as it was 5 years ago when it was supported. The reason for officially stopping support is so they can move their customer services staff to something else, patches and similar stopped long time ago, so nothing changed there.

Windows xp is still used, and most importantly the software that is very important for it, different  security software, browsers and similar are still supporting windows xp and getting new updates for it.

Also some game developer still support win xp, but the ones that dont, they dont do it because of it will not work on it, but because of limitation windows xp has. But if the game will work on win xp, you will see most of developers supporting win xp.

I have a feeling this HD remake is not going to be well-received by the public.  This is not a FPS game that lets you walk up to a texture and marvel at its great detail.  In HoMM games, you get a mere OVERHEAD view of objects from a distance that make them look smaller and less detailed, and the perceived increase in detail is therefore greatly diminished.  Combine this with the lack of expansion packs and the lack of any possible integration with existing mods, you can see the writings on the wall.  Also, the original H3 doesn't look too shabby to begin with.  If they did a HD remake for H1 and 2, then maybe people would be more interested.

It's exactly the contrary.
The 2D graphics are made to be at full screen at the best possible view point,  not to far,  not to close.  So you have a great overview of all what's on the map,  and still have détails of all the map objects.

Or why do you think H3 is still much more preffered than all his 3D successors ?  Probably also for other things, but the graphics and overview of the map are two of the main reasons.

But you always see everything at a fixed distance, unlike a FPS game that lets you walk up to an object and get a closer look from all angles.  That's my point.  Somebody at GOG made this capture comparison.  Note that you have to zoom in this closely to see a clear advantage of the HD version on the left over the original version.  And if you compare objects at their original sizes, this comparison shows that the advantage is not as dramatic.  This is akin to Blu-ray versus DVD.  On a small PC monitor, the perceived increase in detail of Blu-ray over DVD is not as dramatic as it is on a 50-inch HDTV.

though you don't have much time to marvel at the texture definition when you get shot in a FPS

But there are always textures close to you in FPS games: the ground in front of you, the walls near you, etc., so it would be hard not to notice texture quality.  Not to mention, there are many non-action first-person games in the adventure genre that require you to examine objects closely.  My point is that a HD upgrade would benefit those games more than it would here.

I made this direct comparison of the game screen between the original and the remake.  Yes, the HD textures are there: the sharper icons, the more detailed castle walls, etc.  But they just don't offer dramatic increase in detail.  You can maximize the images in my comparison and look at them back and forth and see if you agree.

I think they look much better in the HD version.  But this isn't the main reason why i bought the game.

Main reason is to now be able to find opponents again, easily !
I also hope we can cross multiplay-play (Windows vs androïd or other platforms).

Gameranger is a thing, and also the tablets don't have Steam so no online play for those.

More than certain that it's not the case. This H3 is based on a source someone kept in their basement - figuratively speaking. . .

There was a Twitch.tv Heroes III HD stream today with some of the developers on this project. They were answering some interesting questions asked by the chat. If anybody is interested you can find the vod here:

vod

Just be warned that it can be hard to understand the developers sometimes because of their accents. I didn't watch the whole thing.

Anyhow, somebody named 'garm.zandor' made a summery on the Steam forum, however, I'm not sure if it's 100% accurate or how unbiased it truly is. So take it with a grain of salt.

Quote:

- No random map generator and not planned
- No linked dwellings in map editor and not planned
- No cross-platform multiplayer and not planned
- No workshop (unknown for the future) and/or 3rd party mod support
- No addons/expansions and not planned
- No bugfixes or ui improvements available in 3rd party mods
- No further balancing, besides expansion stats.
- No ladder / competetive gaming

+ Patched until 1.4
+ Original RoE map file structure is supported
+ No Uplay
+ Units stats/price were slightly balanced, as in expansions (Archangels nerfed via price, Fortress boosted via Lizardman and Dragonfly stats, etc)
+ Uncompressed music

Maybe somebody will be able to confirm/revise these statements by watching the whole video. I honestly wont bother with it myself, though.

I watched the stream aswell yesterday. It is true that their french accent was kinda awful, and this is coming from a french guy

Anyway, the graphics are fine to me but I actually was expecting a bit more. No real balancing, no expansions, nothing additional planned yet (in the chat, the devs said "not planned for now" to everything the viewers asked, but well... ).

They said they didn't improve the game because they just wanted to pay a tribute to the orignal Homm3 released in 1999. A not so convincing argument imho.

Lets hope the fan community will manage to change Ubi's mind about it.

Having RoE only is a bit of a letdown, but if they can deliver expansions later on is ok. I think this could sell well, only needs promotion and visibility. Of course if there was an official note saying AB and SoD are possible to do, it would sell even better.

Well then.. I have played the game and I feel kind of disappointed.

They did absolutely nothing to improve the game. The animation quality is really poor. Sometimes the units look really ugly when they move because they revert back to their original state(As they were in the original game only then stretched out). There are a lot of sound glitches. No random map generator, No steam workshop support, Missing content etc etc etc.

The only redeeming factor is the fact that the gameplay is still solid. Unfortunately it is not enough to redeem this thing.

I was really hyped for this game. I had high hopes(perhaps a bit too high). I love the original game(which infact was one of the first games I played in my life). However I cannot recommend this.

The game runs like the unmodded version, sluggish and slow.
It takes so darn long to recruit all the creatures etc, if you haven't purchased it i'd say stay away from the game and enjoy the GoG or your retail copy until/if they ever patch the game.
