IT or nothing

It really depresses me whenever I look at online job offers. It basically say "IT or GTFO". There's like a hundred, no, a thousand offers for "java programist" "C# programist" and so on, but maybe 1-2 offers for pretty much everything else. Excluding salesmen and things like that.

What the hell? Is it really "IT or die" here? Seems so...

IT job offers here are overshadowed by job offers from biggest chain restaurants and our supermarkets. both of which see a lot of employee rotation.

other popular spheres of work sort of speak are builders of any kind. especially when it comes to old apartment building (the so called khrushchyovkas) "renovation".

Guess Lithuania needs more builders than Poorland

In all seriousness, more than 50% job offers in Pooland are IT related. Mostly for code spitters (Java is no.1 request) but some work for network administration and alike, too.

Telecommunication (my branch) - just a few offers.

Stuff like biology, chemistry, and so on - 1 offer max per month.

History, Philosophy - no job offers, ever.

yea we need more builders, and more craftsmen in general. Too bad many of the good ones have fled, ugh what I meant to say emigrated from the country already.

and the 141 yank puppets sitting here would demolish very quickly anything we've built.

Only Ukraine matters to them, because the big bad Ivan will invade us next at any moment. or so they bark for the last 24 years.

now it seems the service sphere needs the most workers these days, but as I said that faces the biggest rotation of employees ever. one look at the exhausted waiters on any big chain restaurant here would tell you why is that.

IT jobs however are low on demand. local job hunting portals offer little in that sphere. same for any kind of job in a more intellectual field, like chems or biology and crap.
People at the unis and institutes are tearing each other throats for a place in some projects.

Hey renovating is super fun! I did demolition and cleaning construction sites for a couple of years. Being paid to smash stuff up and keep the shape is great!

And when it's small stuff no inspectors care to visit you can work in your underwear with big boots, a mask, gloves with crowbar and hammer in hand, you get the mental picture!

Frankly the situation in Lithuania concerning IT is beyond ridiculous in comparison; IT companies want to hire young graduates for beyond ridiculous pays and increased working hours. The only way to get a job without knowing some high profile IT department manager is to have at least one year of working experience, but how are you to get it while you are attending uni, or get into IT services (support staff, etc.). Higher pays are mainly due for IT specialists with quite some experience under their belts and even then most companies do not want to hire people for a temporary period. Most of the specialists are on a rotation from company to company, working dual shifts.

The only companies that cater to younger less experienced IT-ers are small start-ups or off-shore departments, yet you need to have a very specific skill subset to get into those.

Principally, if you want a job in the sphere (of which there are a plenty, just that, as I said, you need the experience), skip studies as your diploma will be worth rags, no matter if you graduate with honours or not.

Also, some job offers are on a permanent rotation - back when I graduated and was looking for a job for a few months, I could see the same ads circulate around the various job search websites and even once I stopped looking I could still the same job positions open.

@Kayna: at least you got payed.
my last job as a builder was underpayed(the money grubbing basterd litvak still owes me and some other workers about a 1000 euro each)
we were provided with little tools(most of them we got to buy ourselves) did other work, like unloading floorboards from a truck, which made us fall behind schedule, amongst other things.

@TDL: same horsecrap in every sphere. everyone needs young guys which can work for chicken feed. unpaid overtime and need for at least one year of expirience is common place.

A fun ad I found a year or so ago:

Looking for a painter, minimum expirience in the field: 10 years. Salary: 800 Litas.

No wonder people are fleeing to the UK and Norway.
I use the word flee, because calling it emigration is utterly riddiculuos given the amounts of people flee this "commie" run country of ours.

Well, let's put it that way: I have a master's degree in Telecommunications, two years of experience in an accredited research institute and a damn good CV. Thing is, I can use it as toilet paper substitute because I'm not a java or C++ programmer. And thus, I can't get a job

Doom, take a look at this. It's not a fun read and verifies, highlights and "casts in bronze" what you have written above. I post the link hoping maybe you can spot a pathway.

Report

I don't know what the solution is to this hellbound train other than hoping; "One day all politicians will put people first and start gutting any company that wants to replace human-beings.

Btw, on another thread I posted about this crapola in some measure and only allowed Tech for dangerous jobs. But on second thought mankind did those jobs for eons, so maybe the grand idea that people sit on their duffs doing nothing but gaming and eating to live past a century is not good for mankind or the earth in the long run.

I lived the destruction of the manufacturing-sector in America and all the while they said "we're moving to a service sector" Now that's mostly toast too. This will not end until GREED no longer rules our leaders worldwide.

Here's why:  Read Part II.

A HISTORY OF TECHNOLOGICAL REVOLUTIONS AND EMPLOYMENT

Consider the following

The sentiment of the government towards the destruction of machinery was explained by a resolution passed after the Lancashire riots of 1779, stating that: “The sole cause of great riots was the new machines employed in cotton manufacture; the country notwithstanding has greatly benefited from their erection [and] destroying them in this country would only be the means of transferring them to another [. . . ] to the detriment of the trade of Britain” (cited in Mantoux, 2006, p. 403).

You know, the "trade of Britain" ruled then, does anyone think that times have changed and people and lively-hoods would ever win today or tomorrow? No way Jose, this is still going on but now it is everywhere.

Yeah, it's the offer and demand. Being a menial worker is better in a rich ( snob ) country. Canada is awesome for that, everybody's snobby and doesn't want to work with their hands, also winter breaks everything !

Working on computers is horrible, it's so time consuming for a result that isn't tangible, you can't see what you've done in the day, it just doesn't give you the feeling that you've actually did something.

Wow, lots of hate for programming here. As an actual Programmer, I can say that it's great. The pay any working conditions are good, the work itself can be interesting - what more could you want?

Also, punishing companies for replacing workers with technology is a terrible idea. Improvements in productivity are great, and technology doesn't repeal the law of comparative advantage.

@Fauch: lol.

to those too lazy to convert, 800 litas translates roughly into 182 pounds, 230 euros or 286 green ones. that's a salary for one month, which you get once all the taxes are deducted.

So no self respecting house painter would actually work for such a stupid sum of money per month, when he can make this in a few days working illegally(what we here call a chalturka).

but that's just one tiny example in this job looking farce.
there are plenty more fish in the see.

another good example was a furniture plant I worked for until June 2013.

Work hours were adjusted whatever the boss felt like. from 7.5 to 10 or 11, a lot of unpaid overtime half an hour of lunch break.
I have a suspicion that some of the guys, me included had a contract which said part time(not even half the workhours on paper, a measly quarter of it.), whilst still working a full day.
the suspicion arose once I didn't get the copy of the contract, and my compensation for sick leave for two weeks roughly 20 euro, which in normal cases should be at least triple the size.

Eventually I was pissed about my workhours being cut for no appearant reason, plus I found out about the "dirty" bits of the company, such as disguising products which are bound to Russia as scrap for China(smuggling essentially), I did the right thing and reported all this crap to the fellas who deal with financial criminals.
Nothing good came out of it though, but the former boss of mine did payed a hefty bribe to keep things quiet.

Welcome to Lithuania!

Erm... what job offers do you expect for those? As a person who loves both, I can tell you that you should never study them in the university and hope to find a decent job or any job after that. "We are looking for a candidate who can explain Hegel's extensive quantum or provide Temujin's family tree 10 generations back" doesn't sound realistic, does it?

Zenofex, there is such a thing as various research institutes, in which people with history and philosophy degrees can get a job.

unfortunately, these are full with old farts which have extremely bloated egos.

Sure, but the opened positions are very limited and are usually not announced on web-sites with job offers (you normally have to know some insider to get in, at least in the Balkan ghetto). The salaries are far from spectacular too. Don't know what the state gives for research in Poland but in Bulgaria it wouldn't spend even a used toilet paper for such a nonsense ever since the fall of the socialist regime. One of the former prime ministers (who is now a prime minister again) even told some protesting scientist receiving something like 200 euro salaries to find something more useful to do.

One day you'll understand my reasoning and stop spouting The Tech-party line. Robots competing against robots negates any grand notions.

Let me ask you a hypo-question; if you had in your hands the Tech that could replace "a human-being doing any activity" and selling it would make you richer than a hundred Bill Gates...would you sell it?
