Absence of coercion would be the most basic thing when you have the concept itself already, do bears in the jungle define themselves as free? Besides, what constitutes as coercion is also debatable, are taxes so? No, freedom is first of all, a state of mind, it doesnt only mean "not chained."  But I already made a thread discussing what freedom is, so I'll leave that to there.

At its most basic form, freedom is indeed only absense of coercion which would mean that bears in the wild are free. However what most people connect freedom with is autonomy or self-determination ("positive liberty"). That I can agree with is a socially constructed state of mind and again, usually in day to day conversations it's what we commonly refer to as freedom when we talk about freedom. But strictly intellectually, I think it's important to separate the concept of negative liberty or freedom, an objective state, with the concept of positive liberty or autonomt, which is a subjective state. The subjective state is metaphysical while the objective state is not.

Yes, I was going to mention the difference between negative and positive freedom also, but as I said, I didnt want to prolong the "what is freedom" debate in this thread when I already made another one for it.
