After many hours of searching through countless posts, I finally found reference to a tool (and one currently without a broken link) called "MMArchive" that seems to allow making changes to any .lod file (that said, I only tried it for the AB expansion file).  This appears to be the answer, as my testing so far has been successful; I was able to update several hero portraits successfully.

In addition to indicating that my issue has now been resolved, I hope that this post may also save others with the same question quite as much searching as I had to go through if they happen to come across this post.

Also, as a side-issue, I would like to suggest that the issue of not being able to post a new thread because someone hasn't replied to enough other posts be reconsidered; I simply had this one question that I wanted to post and no particular desire to go find some random threads to reply to just to increase a posting counter.
