HoMM3 HD graphics

some of you guys bought this game, and i know it has a map editor. i have been trying to find graphics online for it, but am running into a lack of resources.

so, my request is to any who have this game, and know how to post quality screens on the internet.

any graphics uploaded by you, can be turned around and made into available defs in this thread, that you will be able to download. i will ask that this thread not be flooded with requests. a cluster a day should be enough, and i will always be checking back, if i don't have internet access on the particular day that someone uploads screens. the objects will eventually be done and made available, though. so, a service, for your help, is what this comes down to.

ok, as for making screens that will be much easier on me(making the turnaround time much shorter): create the screens in the map editor by placing the set of objects far enough apart that they don't overlap. also, it is imperative to place them on a background that is the opposite in color to whatever you are wanting made. so, snow background(with no decorative tiles) will be optimum for most objects, and vice versa for snow objects.

the quality of any screens posted are important, as well. any screenshots need to be saved in .png format, as any actual color will be retained(.bmp format loses color, .jpg format loses clarity/sharpness).

edit: lol, i forgot my own request. cursed ground patches, and swamp trees. those two sets of graphics are what i, myself am interested in at the moment. they will be made available once made, the same as any other request.

thanks. these will be more difficult to cut out, but not as difficult as graphics jumbled together on a decorated map screen(like how i cut the fern). i wonder, why the background is buggy, though? i would've thought a .png image would be crystal clear. is this the way the graphics were ripped from the game, or because of something else?

i see the swamp trees made it into this upload, but is there anything in particular you are wanting sooner rather than later yourself, oxfea? you didn't specify.

they use .dds as internal format
and my converter ignores transparency

thanks again. sadly, there were only two cursed ground patch graphics in both uploads, and they are possibly duplicates.

edit: i started organizing the .png's. the first i will work on are the swamp and desert trees, and afterward the swamp foliage. thanks again, oxfea. i wonder, you have uploaded x2 and x3, but what about x1? there are battlefields and magic terrain patches that are missing from the group.

so i take it that means only cursed ground and magic plains made it into the HD version? if that's the case, there's still files missing. not all of the cursed ground patches are there, only 1 so far. i don't care about the magic plains, the originals are just fine with me(i never use them anyway).

i just realized that i HAVE played the RoE version, by your post. i was confused, because i didn't realize that the cursed ground in this screen:



was made using only one def. now i know i have to duplicate. which kind of sucks, but oh well. it's just going to be that much harder when i try using these graphics to make my bone fields.

so far i've made a swamp tree, the Clover of Fortune, and Pandora's Box, using the new graphics. the swamp trees are somehow more difficult to make than recreating the new Cursed Grounds so that we can have a set of 8 without repeating graphics. i will post a gif showing the work i had to do to make it, when i am done with the stuff i thought needed replaced the most(and post a link here for download, as well).

halted progress on the Cursed Grounds, and started work on the Necro dwellings. the swamp and desert trees are prepped and ready for work. some of the swamp foliage will have to be replaced entirely, as the upgrades are coming out sub-standard(which is a problem with graphics that aren't properly defined, or too detailed to shrink to the correct size).

sweet bleeding jesus, do i despise websites that run at the speed of wood when i'm trying to do anything.

anysnowingway, i'm releasing what i have made so far(that are up to standard):

the sawmill nearest the bottom i made myself, to replace one that HotA made(i think). i'll be fixing the cut wood later, as that graphic is still sub-par. i did fix the sawmill itself, though.

much better than the original transfers, i think. the swamp and desert trees had to get tweaked, as their initial colors were off. i kept playing around with colors, lighting, sharpness, and contrast until i got something that blended well with the other trees i've made, and with the graphics that i don't need replacing in the game. i also had to blend the edges, as they were much too dark.

but nothing in the upload is straight transfers, anyway; they've all been optimized. some of the HD swamp bush transfers were so bad(and can't be fixed without re-inventing the graphic), that they'll have to be replaced entirely(which is why i didn't add them to this lineup).

this is all single-frame work(that you will make defs out of). download from the links oxfea posted, and take a look for yourself. there's a ton to work with. if you don't have prior experience with this kind of stuff, this project would be a great place to start. graphics work isn't simple cut, shrink, and def making. none of it is, if it's quality; you have to tinker with new graphics until they blend well with existing graphics. this is true of any graphics; even ones designed for the game.

there are a lot of the original HoMM3 graphics, that were apparently worked on by different people, or under different time constraints, which is why you have some graphics that are good, and others that need work. for instance, nearly all of the water animations in the townscreens are missing one frame of animation(it's obvious where they loop); nearly all stronghold townscreen and map objects are bad; etc.

but anyway, download the links, and start tinkering. as a rule, the correct resizing is 1/2 height, once righting the frame correctly(most of them are rotated left 1x). you will have to fix the cyan/dark teal edges, before shrinking to size. not sure what tool you will be using, but i use an older version of Photoshop.

as for what actually needs done: anything i haven't posted here. anything else i do will be uploaded, and i'll keep this thread up to date, to avoid crosswork. no need in unnecessarily wasting time. but you can practice on whatever you like. working on various graphics from different games helps. i have played with graphics from all kinds of games and whatnot(even a painting), to put into HoMM3.

i'm necroing this thread because the hd townscreens themselves aren't included in the uploads oxfea sent so long ago. i have been working on making faction homes based on the homes in the townscreens. i'm currently on dungeon(because i'm starting to focus a lot more on the long list of subterrean stuff i plan on adding), and need the townscreen. but all of the townscreens(that actually have homes in the townscreen; so that excludes fortress and necropolis) will be needed, to make the homes.

i'm currently working on two new dungeon homes from what i could cut out from what was in oxfea's uploads, but there are some more hiding behind buildings that i could add to the lineup. any help would be much appreciated.

this is all i have to work with, atm. as you can see, some of the graphics i need are obscured. having them in their un-obscured form so i could make them suitable for map objects, would be very helpful to me.

i also wanted to add, that all of the work i've been doing for this project/thread is being added to the next patch update(all of my previous work here was already added to the last release).
