Heroes I is even now a cute game, to be honest. Even if it's so simple and easy if we compare it to the newer games from serie, but come on, Heroes I is the oldest among Heroes of Might&Magic games.
I would love to see something like HD Edition of it though. It could look like this:
- full compatibility with newer PCs and operating systems;
- redrawn sprites;
- make it fit to the higher resolutions (i.e. HD, Full HD)
- new town of Necropolis and a dedicated campaign to it (I've always had a feeling of emptiness while not seeing skeletons or other undead creatures  5th faction would be a nice additional feature)
Too bad that propably we won't see "HD Edition" of Heroes 1. At least Orzie and his team do a great job on "remading" Heroes 2 by modding Heroes 3, so it means mixing graphics and mechanics of both games.
In fact Heroes 2 is 2nd on my private "best-HoMM-games" list, so I have my fingers crossed and I can say I've already been impressed by your work.

As with most classic older titles, Heroes 1's dated qualities are precisely what give the game its charm.
I wouldn't change anything about the original game per se. Perhaps a graphics resolution bump-up (not a design overhaul -- merely sharpen the sprites so they play better on higher than 1024x768 screens.)
Also maybe tweak the game's stability. Last time I tried playing it on Win3.1/XP I found it crashed fairly often.

I suppose this is a very old thread and I need somewhere to post before I can open my own thread.
I'm very interested in finding the existing HOMM1 mods. People keep talking about them, but I've never found them.
I'm not looking for Heroes II stuff or the Sucession Wars Heroes III mod but specifically Heroes 1. Does anyone know anyone who's modded them in any way?
