I have a few q's for those with the game!

I hope you don't mind if i ask a few questions because i'm dying to find out a few facts!!

The game has yet to be released here in Adelaide, but, i would love to find out a few pointers just so i can learn a few things and also make up my mind if i should get the game.

Question one: What does the front cover thingo look like?(i would appreciate scanned images)
Question two: Is the manual very helpful? (if not i might just burn it(the cd))

Question three: How does the game feel like after all these yrs of talking about it, does it meet the expectation?

I hope you can answer any of these!!!!!

Some answers

look at http://www.mmportals.com/heroes4.html to see what the covers look like. Not particularly impressing covers for me but they may hide a treasure. ;-)

Now, it depends how much you expected of the game. I personally thought it would be very poor so I was a kinda of surprised (good thing) to see it. However, people who took really great expectations in it, were a bit disappointed. I think it depends on your PC too. If it's slow, low resolution and music skipping and blocks every time, you're more likely not to like the game.

Just try it out, you will know it better. If you need to upgrade your PC for it, do it, it won't be useless. :-)

depends

Not sure how annoying it would be if you had alot of the technical problems people having. Mine has played pefectly, doesn't hog sys memory or music skip or anything.  Rarity for me, most games have at least one problem for my sys on release.

Actual game play is very fun and reminiscent of H2 which I always enjoyed more single player then H3. Haven't decided multi yet, alot depends on what the patch does cause I can see some potential problem almost as severe as gremlin rush.

Heroes in battles you get used to pretty quickly- I think the biggest difference is the skill system- branching paths and prerequisites of one skill type to advance in another works beautifully.

The magic system is almsot like H3 so very familiar, just alot of the problems and bugs of H3 are taken out.

The one thing also drastically changed has to do with potions and artifacts. I haven't found any artifact yet which comes close in power to a relic strength from H3. The best ones seem to be wands and treasure chests which add gold each day.

Potions can be game wreaker for multi in my opinion. One caled potion of immortality is the worst- you can buy one for 1,000 gold or find them on map and put in hero inventory, then your hero drinks it and when hero dies is resurrected immediatly with full HP.  In this circumstance a spell caster type hero seems much too powerful compared to the might heroes. Get a decent spell caster and a tactics hero(general, fieldmarshal best classes I found so far)and your spell caster keeps casting fireballs, implosions, CL etc on enemy and even though it doesn't do insane damage as happened in H3 so often, the fact it can't be retaliated against outside of magic mirror(redirects 50% of damage back at the caster) it is more powerful than the damage # makes it appear. Though a good chaos hero can cast +500 implosion by 15th level.

Just adding...

The most annoying thing (apart from the buttsucky graphics) is, in my opinion, the lack of cursor and movement shadow in the battle screen. Because of the new geometrical system (where there used to be hexagons (or something), now there is something else), two units who appear to be standing several grids away from eachother is in fact standing shoulder to shoulder, and so when you try to move a third unit between those two, he takes the long way around, causing all sorts of unexpected trouble.

It can also be hard separating obstacles from decorations.

Otherwise, great game.

The "RL" manual is short and crappy, but there's an on screen manual which is much better (although it's annoying scrolling up and down for hours instead of just flipping through pages)

What I really miss is a help file for the map editor. There, you're really on your own...

Play well

well

I've heard the manual coming with any version other than Elite is pretty crappy. The manual I got is 128 pages and I think it's the same as the one on the cd. Most of it wasn't real important or interesting info- the fold out chart that also comes with elite version more handy, and aside from keyboard shortcuts and the chart which shows experience needed for each level in the manual index- I didn't read it beyond the chapter headings to see what was in it.

not sure

I got mine for US$ 34.99 but it was a really good price. I was gonna wait to buy it until the patch came out, then I saw that price so I figured why not, it'll take a couple months to get that low anyway.

I ordered it from Gamestop.com- not sure what country you are in, but if it's somewhere in Europe they might ship there also. I've heard some places eltite is same price as normal, and other places it costs more, if you want the manual and fold out charts, just make sure you get elite, unless it costs $5-10 more, it's worth it.

a few

Book manual, a foldout map, and a chart of the creatures by town and level with HP, damage, speed, etc. 1 year membership in some online guild which I think is attempt by 3DO to get people to pay for eventually. Free maps bonus campaigns later on supposedly.  Hmm... not sure how many other differences their are- oh, box is different, elite is dark gray with silver, the regular is gold I think.

you're from Adelaide, Australia right? I'm in Sydney. Do you know when the game released here? I am preordering HOMM4 from games warehouse and apparently their supplier Take 2 won't have it until mid to late April. Do you have any new info? Why is it taking so long anyway?

i don't think that elite will be on sale in Australia. i haven't seen any HOMM4 Elite preorders from any aust. retailers. However, I do know that the normal game sells for round about $75.00, quite a bit more than in the US, even with the current exchange.

I bought the standard version  (in USA)

the gold version I have has
- 128 page manual
- creature stats /town buildup foldout chart

it was my understanding that the only difference was guild membership with the elite version

the standard version in Europe only has the CDs

I got standard US and it has the fold out, 128 page manual...
as I understood it, the only difference between the standard and elite is the free guild membership and "first looks" at new campaigns and stuff like that.

ebgames (electroniques boutique) is great for orders, but not sure which countries they ship to.

I'd get the game, it has won me over very quickly.
