Because there is a core difference between anonymously donating to a mod creator, given that your name will never be publicly mentioned, and donating to HC, hence brag about by having golden encrusted that "HC supporter".

This is why I dislike the HC donating concept.

If that's all you can see then your judgement is clouded by prejudice. I didn't even had a clue I was about to receive it, as did nobody at the time because I actually was the first to donate. I didn't do it to brag, and even if someone would donate just to brag, it still disproves your case that donations are a joke. If a content creator manages to find a way to reward donation with privileges then all the more power to them.

Maybe you forgot that you had in your signature "first HC supporter!" for months?

Look, I don't care when you enjoy your new toy, status, or whatever; but I don't buy the "I am all for donate, HC is the proof". Donating for mods is a sign of respect and a complete obliteration of self ego. HC donating created some worry in HC, because of the somehow voyeurism it brought with.

No that was the status, the signature was a quote from Valeriy praising me, lol. I did it because it ticked people off so easily, and I wasn't the only one. But the point stands that I did it out of a selfless desire to give back, and that's all there was to it.

Voyeurism?! How's that? I don't think so. The only reason behind the "worrying" of some members was that they didn't had the privilege to browse HC free of ads like they did before. Well, some were simply jelly of the status, but I wouldn't call that a reason. In some way, it was similar to how the situation with Skyrim mods is now, only that Valeriy didn't put a paywall on the boards. He left browsing free, only that he gave small privileges with donations.

Put the shovel down before you dig yourself down to Narnia, Stevie.

I'm no expert, but taking payment for seems absolutely appalling to me. Donations are fine, but actively charging for content to a game you don't own? no, not cool. (you still own your copy and should be allowed to change that however you like but that's for another time)

Well, I'm no expert either, but technically a creator owns the intellectual rights over his content even if he might not hold the rights for the carrier of that content. In other words, you hold the rights for the way you assemble the resources (the design) and the hard work you invest in doing so, but you don't own the resources themselves. It's like building a house out of someone else's materials. So naturally each side wants a share of the revenue which that content later attracts. Only that now the share is imposed by one party over the other (and grossly so), rather than mutually decided until an agreement is met. As I see it, the most easy way to avoid legal headaches is for the developers to sell the rights over the resources as well for a fixed price, either with the base game or as a separate transaction for those interested. But I doubt this will ever happen.

the company already sold the game (well, theoretically, we all know you downloaded it illegally ) so that should be its share?

I don't see how it is like building a house. once you bought the materials, you can use them as you wish for free, you don't have to pay the materials company an extra to have a right to assemble them into a house.

So it seems that Gaben took to reddit for damage control https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/33uplp/mods_and_steam/

He makes some good points and I do seriously agree that the system needs some real ironing out

He also says that if this system doesn't work out (ie people won't buy mods), they'll just scrap it

Quality mods deserve some "reward", mostly because they often make the original game far better than it was before them. Still, the only people who should get any money for this are the developers of the mods, full stop. And only after it is confirmed that the mods are of technically acceptable quality and (highly) preferably after they are tested with some sort of demo. If this idea goes to the right direction, it could turn into good business aimed at fixing the flaws and improving the quality of the industry's initial output.

Speaking of "quality", here's a quality check on shadowscale, the posterboy for the payshop: http://imgur.com/gallery/qFlFa

(Credit goes to Ganerum in the skyrim reddit for awesome showpiece)

I'm sure we'll get too see many more quality mods like this in the payshop if it stays

There is no modder diploma so anyone will be able to upload a mod, even the worse. but the refund policy is fair: you have 24 hours to get a refund, so bad modders will obviously not make any money from.

Refund to your steam wallet that is, kinda like those worker-benefit cards that only work in company stores

Besides, currently authors are free to censor reviews they don't like, so good luck getting honest reviews.

Also to mention, because yes, you'll be able to work out everything in a mod in 24 hours and see if it's actually what you wanted to purchase. See, this kind of wild west workshop is exactly one of the big issues with it...triple so since Valve expects the community to police it and bothers to do next to nothing themselves

I believe it has very tiny chances to work. There are 35000 mods for Skyrim out, if only 10% of them went paid, imagine the headache for Valve, having to deal with reports, complaints and refunds for 3500 mods. And this is only Skyrim.

Midas Magic mod now has a 4% chance per spell cast to prompt an in-game ad for you to buy the full paid version on Steam

EDIT:

He took the mod down because of the rage. So now one of the greatest Skyrim magic overhauls is just gone for the moment I guess.

Wow.

Wonderful stuff.

I heard about that on the OotS forums too. What reaction was he expecting, exactly, when he added POPUPS to it? That's like one of the biggest things that people hate...

Edit: And the paid version is still on Steam, so not entirely gone. Though why he didn't just take the free version down to begin with when he intended to make money off of it kind of boggles the mind.

question: if modders/steam start charging for mods, will Bethesda be able to sue them? Or is this a gray area?
