AI creature movement

Let's say the distance between AI and my troop is 8 hexes, and AI speed is 6 or 7, what is that trick that AI does which allows him to first walk 1-2 hexes and then immediately after that to attack my creature, effectively moving 8 hexes with a creature that can only move 6-7?

Can players do it too?

The AI player usually waits its turn at higher difficulties, instead of just charging blindly forward. When the game works through the order of creatures who initially waited, it does so in reverse order from the standard. I.e., slow creatures will move first and fast creatures will move last.

If the AI has the fastest units, it will appear to move twice; once towards the end of one turn and almost immediately again at the start of the next turn.

And players can do it too, provided they found the magic 'wait' button.
